Shannon Chaney is as familiar with uncertainty as most Vermonters are to changing leaves each fall."We sort of white knuckle our way through life until bedtime," said Chaney. She moved to Vermont from Louisiana after surviving Hurricane Katrina.“COVID is different from a natural disaster, but you still kind of have to get out of bed in the morning and just get on with it," she said. Her uncertainty now, like millions of Americans, is at the dinner table.“We have two kids who go through a lot of groceries," said Chaney.Chaney's husband works full-time, but her job has been on hold through much of the pandemic.“My pride doesn’t feed my kids,” she said.Multiple nights a week across Vermont, there’s proof that in uncertain times, communities stand strong to help people who are food insecure like Chaney.“Food for me is such a source of comfort,” said Stephanie Bonin.Bonin helped start “Everyone Eats” with some of Vermont’s federal coronavirus relief money. The program provides help for those in need of a meal and those who need to make them.“For me, it was a dream to open up the restaurant," said Nash Patel.Patel and his wife, Leda Scheintub, opened Dosa Kitchen in February. Weeks later, the pandemic forced them to close.“You want to be realistic. None of us have lived through a pandemic before," Scheintub said. They say there were times they worried if the restaurant would have to close forever, but they are open again.Everyone Eats pays for 350 meals a week to be handed out.Right now, it's most of Dosa Kitchen’s business.“About 75%," said Scheintub. To use federal money, the meals must have some local ingredients, helping farmers get their crops into kitchens.Groups like Food Connects bring crops from nearby farms to restaurants that make hundreds of meals that are handed out each week."Restaurants know how to feed people and the community loves and appreciates our local restaurants. And our restaurants know how to buy from farmers," Bonin said.Everyone Eats has created a balance, but one that’s at risk.“We’re worried about the CARES Act money drying up," said Bonin.Bonin is working on a path forward for the program if Congress doesn’t pass another stimulus bill. There is enough money for it to run through the end of the year. After that, Everyone Eats faces the same problem of uncertainty as so many of the people it helps.“At the end of the day, you have two or three, however many you have, of mouths, looking at you, saying ‘I'm hungry,’" said Chaney. 2496

Sounds of gunfire prompted emergency calls and a lockdown at a North Carolina high school, but a public information officer says there is currently no evidence of an active shooter.Officials with the Pender County Sheriffs' Office are still searching Topsail High School as a precaution, and Pender Schools remain on lockdown. The high school went into lockdown at 6:30 a.m. ET due to reports of the sounds of gunfire. SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A mother in Simi Valley found Oxycodone and Xanax among her child’s Halloween candy following a “trunk or treat” event, according to the Simi Valley Police Department. The woman told police she took her kids to the event after seeing a post about it on Facebook.“When the family returned to their residence, the parent dumped her children’s candy out on the counter so she could spray it with disinfectant spray as a COVID-19 precaution,” police said. After inspecting the candy, the woman discovered a clear bag that contained blue pills, later identified as Oxycodone, and a white cylinder containing Xanax. The department is still investigating the incident and no suspect information was available as of Sunday morning“We would like to remind parents about the importance of inspecting any candy or edibles their children receive during Halloween events,” police wrote. 908

Special counsel Robert Mueller is set to reveal the extent of Michael Flynn's cooperation and insights into the dealings of Russians with the Trump campaign and administration a year after the guilty plea from President Donald Trump's former national security adviser. In the court filing due by midnight Tuesday, Mueller's team could also nod toward the next criminal indictments in its sights. The special counsel's office is expected to describe the crimes Flynn committed that led to his plea and how he has helped the Russia probe this year. Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators on December 1, 2017. The coming filing is meant to brief a federal judge before Flynn's sentencing.Similar filings before other Mueller defendants' sentencings -- former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, Dutch lawyer Alex Van der Zwaan and Internet salesman Richard Pinedo -- contained revelations about what each person did and knew connected to the Russians and members of the campaign. But none of those defendants cut a deal to cooperate with Mueller like Flynn did. Each earned prison time that ranged from 14 days to six months. Some of the details in Tuesday's filing could be described under seal, especially if parts of the investigation that Flynn contributed to are not yet public.Last December, Flynn became the first high-ranking Trump adviser to agree to formally cooperate with the special counsel's probe.Soon after his plea, attention turned to other Trump confidants and campaign and administration officials, including the President's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. The details revealed at his plea hearing raised the question of what Trump had known about Flynn's discussions with the Russian government. The fruits of what Flynn shared with investigators are not yet known. But he likely gave Mueller a window into not just the 2016 presidential campaign but also the new administration's dealings with Russians and reactions to the early days of the Russia investigation.Kushner has not been charged with a crime, nor have any others whom Flynn was outlined to have lied about. But inklings of what prosecutors learned from Flynn and who else on the campaign and transition may still have legal risks could come out in the filing Tuesday. 2272
