SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousand of San Diegans are saving big by "buying nothing."It's just past 9 a.m. on a late November in Bay Ho and dozens of breads, rolls, and muffins are ready for taking. Becky Sloan is the first to arrive. The food is set up outside the home of Tomira Baca-Craig, who runs a food co-op that divvies out extra bread donated by bakeries and stores. On this morning, she posted the giveaway on her "Buy Nothing" Facebook group.It's not just bread. Sloan showed 10News photos of baseballs, crafting items, shoes for her children and home decor, just some of the stuff she's received in the last two years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three East San Diego County school districts are moving back to distance learning because of this weekend's harsh weather.The San Diego County Office of Education says schools in Julian Union Elementary School District and Warner Unified School District will move to distance learning on Monday. The county made move due to forecasted snow Sunday night and freezing temperatures on Monday.SDCOE added that Julian Union High School will have a snow day without distance learning with a scheduled makeup day at the end of the school year."The safety of students and school staff is of the utmost importance to San Diego County school districts," the county said in its announcement.The National Weather Service forecasts the Julian and Pine Valley areas will see one to two inches of snow overnight at 4,500 to 5,000 feet, and lows of 23 to 33 degrees. Monday, the high is expected to hover between 46 and 52 degrees before reaching the mid-50s on Tuesday.The mountain region should hit low- to mid-60s on Saturday, according to NWS. 1058

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thursday, 19 new cases of E. Coli were reported among Marine recruits, according to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.Although 19 new cases were reported, the number of recruits still recovering from the illness fell to 86 Thursday. Tuesday, 302 recruits were reportedly undergoing treatment for E. Coli. That number fell again Wednesday as 214 recruits were still undergoing treatment.RELATED: 26 more Marine recruits sickened by E. coli, according to MCRD"The command is continuing to take precautionary measures and care for those who are affected," said Brig. Gen. William Jurney, commanding general, MCRD San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region.The cause of the E. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Though the academic school year begins Monday, most UC San Diego students have a few more days before they have to log onto their online classes. But, that’s not the only changes students are dealing with this semester.Student Anthony Sanchez said nothing seems normal this semester. Going into his second year, he’s adapting to changes the university has made to try and prevent the spread of the coronavirus on campus.“I understand why they have to do it and I understand and agree with it. But from the student perspective, I’m 19, and it’s not really a fun thing to go through right now,” Sanchez said.Ninety percent of UC San Diego classes will be held virtually, and there will be many students like Sanchez that will be logging on from campus housing. He’s hoping this semester will go a lot smoother than last semester.Sanchez added, “This fall, I’m expecting it to be better in terms of how it’s structured. Because a lot of teachers were going on the fly and setting up lectures and scheduling as it was going. I’m expecting it to be more organized.”Sanchez told ABC 10News that the school was organized when it came to students moving into campus housing. There were about 7,500 students that returned to campus.The move-in days were spread out over 10 days to space people out. Each student could only bring two people to help them move.Each student was also given a coronavirus test, and Sanchez said he got his results within 48 hours.To help control the spread of COVID-19 on campus, the university also launched a voluntary program that utilizes smartphone technology to notify students if they may have been exposed.As for Sanchez, and what’s ahead for this fall quarter, he said he’ll just work on following the rules and saying positive to get through the year.“I guess I’m just going to have to make it the best that I can with what I can. It should be interesting,” Sanchez said.As far as testing, all students that live in on-campus housing and those that attend classes on campus are required to get tested for the coronavirus twice a month. 2092
