CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A South Bay family is trying to help residents at senior care facilities one letter at a time.When Mariana Hughes learned of the ban on non-essential visitors at local senior care facilities, the Eastlake High English teacher came up with an idea."It just broke my heart. I didn't want them to be forgotten," said Hughes.Hughes contacted four facilities in the South Bay, including several veterans homes. Her 14-year-old son Christian then started writing letters, a bunch of them. The letters are aimed at injecting a little joy."I'm just going to write more letters, whatever I can do to make people happy ... because I know these are hard times for them," he said.Hughes posted her idea on Facebook, which quickly caught fire. Others promised to write their own letters. Some sent 10news photos of children showing their cards, drawings and letters, after another teacher began her own campaign to send letters to nursing homes in the East County."If we get the word out and this catches on, lots more seniors that are lonely, afraid and sad are going to see that their community loves them," said Hughes.It's a love received, word by word."We can't maybe fix the whole world, but each person can do something every single day to lift up other people ... and this is our opportunity," said Hughes.Hughes says she's taking precautions, including washing hands before letter writing, and using stickers instead of stamps. (KGTV) — Chula Vista Police have identified a woman who was found shot to death in a field earlier this month.Police said 23-year-old Christina Garcia was found on Aug. 5 at about 6:30 a.m. in a field near the 3100 block of Main Street. When police arrived at the scene, they said it appeared she had an apparent gunshot wound and considered the incident a homicide.CVPD says the circumstances and motive behind Garcia's death were still unclear as of Thursday.Anyone with information on a potential suspect(s) or who may have witnessed the incident are asked to call San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 637

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A South Bay mother was alarmed to find a man standing over her daughter's bed early Saturday.Police say the mom discovered the strange man just after 6:30 a.m. standing over her 10-year-old daughter as she slept at their home on Madison Ave. The man ran past the mom and out the back door, running south on Madison Ave., police added.The woman's daughter was not harmed. Police say there were at least two other young girls in the house as well.Police said the suspect may have gained entry through an unlocked back door.Police are searching for the suspect, described as an either white or Hispanic man, with a bald head, and possibly tattoos on his face.Anyone with information is asked to call Chula Vista Police at 619-691-5151. 769

CINCINNATI — Cross-country runner Justin Gallegos is making history. He’s the first athlete with cerebral palsy to sign an endorsement contract with Nike. The University of Oregon junior was given the news last weekend after a college race, and he was visibly touched by achieving his dream of becoming a professional runner. Justin’s parents, Brent and Tracy Gallegos, say they’re proud all Justin has worked to achieve, and were stunned to see him in that moment."I’ve never seen him that emotional ever…..ever," Brent Gallegos said.Justin’s condition affects muscle and motor function, but he didn’t let that stop him."He works very hard for it and when he sets his goals, he sets them very high," Tracy Gallegos said.His story of overcoming obstacles is inspiring others. He was a big topic of conversation among some medical professionals attending a three-day conference for the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine hosted by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. "To show the world that we really can be successful and contribute in some way to society and that we’re valuable," said Dr. Raffi Najarian, who has cerebral palsy.He hopes stories like Justin’s will inspire others."It’s great to see because it’s something that we have seen, you know, up to this point," Najarian said.As for Justin, he has a message for everyone: "You don’t have to let your disability or physical impairments stop you." 1440
