But the history of Thanksgiving, and the relationship between the two groups, is not that simple.“There was a lot of cultural misunderstanding, and there was some just flat out theft, and murder, and those things happened too,” said Tressa Brown with the Kentucky Heritage Council.Brown says what's taught in schools often romanticizes the first Thanksgiving and fails to acknowledge the wrongdoings against American Indians.“The stories that we perpetuate tend to make at least the dominant culture feel good, not so much for the other cultures. This is not a day of Thanksgiving for native people,” said Brown.She says Native Americans traditionally give thanks every day, rather than one set day each year. A part of Brown’s work includes traveling to schools to educate students and teachers about appropriate ways to teach and celebrate the holiday.“I think it's really important that kids be taught respect for those cultures, respect for what is sacred among other people. And not to denigrate it by dressing up and, you know, hitting your hand over your mouth to make noise and speaking in broken English,” said Brown. Brown says many don't realize that Native Americans are modernized, and they live just like everyone else.“The American Indian cultures, multiple, are vibrant, alive, thriving,” said Brown. Right here in Kentucky there is a rich Native American history. So Brown says this Thanksgiving take time to read up on the culture, and put a stop to hurtful stereotypes.“Respect is due, respect for that history, and those people is due,” said Brown.She says there are groups in America who are making an effort to acknowledge the history of Native Americans and trying to make amends.Brown tells LEX 18 the Indigenous Peoples Day movement is one example of that. 1949

A family on vacation at Yellowstone National Park was caught in the middle of a massive bison stampede that damaged their rental car.Video shows more than a hundred of the animals, of all sizes and ages, charge vehicles that are stopped on the road.One bison hit the Delle Chiaie family’s car, smashing the front windshield of the vehicle.“I can’t believe we didn’t take the insurance,” said one man on the video. “The whole hood is crushed.”Watch the video of the bison stampede below: 498

A bill that will require the chemical castration of some sex offenders in Alabama as a stipulation for parole has been signed by the state's governor.Gov. Kay Ivey signed the legislation on Monday after it was approved by the state's legislature on May 31. In the process of chemical castration, a person is given an injection or pills to significantly reduce libido.The bill affects criminals who commit sex crimes against children age 13 and younger, requiring they undergo the process before they are released from prison. A container of screws that fell off a vehicle and littered the roadway in Jackson County, Mississippi, caused flat tires along nearly 30 miles of interstate.Mississippi Highway Patrol responded Tuesday after getting numerous calls about stranded motorists near the Pascagoula River Bridge. When officers arrived, they discovered sheet metal screws scattered across Interstate 10 West. In total, 36 passenger cars and three semis each had multiple flat tires."Wrecker response time was upwards to three hours for [motorists] waiting on tow trucks due to the number of calls for service," the Mississippi Highway Patrol said in a statement."Troopers assisted [motorists] with changing flat tires and providing lane safety" for those who were stranded.Courtney Beauvais was on her way home to Ocean Springs when she noticed that she had a flat. Her car was equipped with run-flat tires, designed to resist deflation when punctured, so she was able to exit the highway and make it home."I noticed the car wobble a little bit when I exited," she said. "When I got home, I noticed screws in the side wall and in the bottom of the front tire."She now has to get a new tire for her car."I didn't think anything of it when I got the flat tire," she said. "Once I saw the pictures on Facebook when I got home, I was like, 'oh, my goodness.' "Luckily, the flat tires didn't cause any wrecks. A communication satellite almost out of fuel has gotten a new life after the first space docking of its kind. Northrop Grumman and Intelsat announced the successful docking nearly 22,500 miles above Earth on Wednesday. Northrop Grumman's satellite this week closed in on the aging Intelsat satellite and clamped onto it. The duo will remain attached for the next five years. The Intelsat satellite was never designed for this kind of docking, but officials said everything went well. Northrop Grumman envisions satellite refueling and other robotic repairs in another five to 10 years. 597
