BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday held a banquet at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in west Beijing to welcome foreign leaders and international dignitaries who will attend the Olympic Games closing ceremony in the evening.     Hu said in a toast that the Beijing Olympic Games have promoted the Olympic spirit of solidarity, friendship and peace.     "The success of the Beijing Olympic Games is attributable to the concerted efforts of the Chinese people and people from the rest of the world," said Hu. Chinese President Hu Jintao held a banquet Sunday to welcome foreign leaders and international dignitaries who will attend the Olympic Games closing ceremony in the evening"The glory goes to the Olympic Family, to athletes who have competed hard, to volunteers from different parts of the world and to friends the world over who have been involved in the Beijing Olympic Games in various ways," Hu said.     Calling the past 16 days "a wonderful and exciting time together," the Chinese leader said that the hosting of the Beijing Olympics will give a boost to the further development of sports in China, promote more extensive exchanges and cooperation between China and the International Olympic Family, and further enhance the mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese people and people of all other countries.     The Beijing Olympic Games have become "a grand event of international sports competition and cultural exchanges" witnessed and joined by people of the whole world, said Hu.     Since the opening of the Beijing Games, friends from all parts of the world have come together in the Chinese capital to experience the charm of the International Olympic Movement, said the president.     "The Chinese people have greeted all the guests with great enthusiasm and shared with people from across the world the joy and happiness," he added.     He expressed sincere thanks to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Family for their support and assistance, and extended heartfelt congratulations to the athletes from various countries and regions on their outstanding performances at the Beijing Games.     The president also pledged that China would work hard to guarantee the success of the Paralympic Games, scheduled to open in Beijing in early September.     "With the goal of 'Two Games, Equal Splendor,' we will deliver a high-standard Paralympic Games with distinctive features and continue to contribute our part to the development of the International Olympic Movement," he said.     He expressed the confidence that through the concerted efforts of people all over the world, the Olympic spirit will be carried forward and mankind will enjoy an even better future.     "We all look forward to the reunion in London in four years' time!" he told the guests.     Among the guests were IOC President Jacques Rogge and Honorary President Juan Antonio Samaranch, as well as leaders and dignitaries from more than 20 countries and regions.

BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council published on Friday guidelines on post-quake reconstruction, emphasizing house repair and building work.     The State Council, China's Cabinet, stressed priority for repairing and building houses for people whose homes were destroyed during the May 12 tremor.     "Check for repairable buildings and fix them as soon as possible; scientifically choose sites, economically use land and set down reasonable quake-resistant levels for building new houses," the guidelines said.     Areas suitable for living must be marked off based on scientific standards and evaluations on geology and natural resources. Meanwhile, the government will see to the reasonable distribution regarding population, industry and productivity, according to the guidelines. Residents in quake-hit Yingxiu Township are now reconstructing their hometown    The reconstruction of buildings should take local advice into account, and be based on governmental subsidies, social support and local resources.     All the measures were aimed to let quake-hit people live in "safe and comfortable houses as soon as possible", said the guidelines.     Resources should be optimized to upgrade quake resistance standards and improve the quality of construction, the guidelines said.     Priority should be given to the reconstruction of public facilities, including schools and hospitals, and these buildings should be the "safest, most solid and trustworthy".     The guidelines required high schools and vocational schools be located in county seats, middle school in townships while primary school sites be relatively concentrated.     The guidelines also underscored the importance of protecting the ethnic and cultural relics affected by the major quake.     Earthquake sites and memorial halls would be erected, and the reconstruction of government buildings should be "frugal" and "practical."     The restoration of infrastructure should be adjusted to local conditions and planning, the guidelines added.

FUZHOU, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Fung Wong, the eighth tropical storm to hit China's coast this year, made landfall in the southeastern Fujian Province on Monday, according to the provincial observatory.     The eye of the powerful typhoon landed at Donghan Town of Fuqing City at 10 p.m. with winds of up to 119 km per hour. "Heavy rains and winds are expected after the eye leaves the town," an official with the flood control office of Fuqing City said.     Before the typhoon landed, Fuqing had seen torrential rain with 205 millimeters falling from midnight to 8 p.m. on Monday.     In Puxia County, the power was cut off as 15 electricity transmission lines and 498 transformer stations were damaged. But no casualties were reported.     The typhoon is also likely to bring more heavy rains and strong winds in coastal areas of the province early on Tuesday. The rainfall could exceed 200 millimeters, the meteorologists forecast.     Offshore, winds could increase to force 12, while in the coastal cities, force 7 to 9 winds were expected, according to the latest forecast of the provincial meteorological station.     Torrential rains were forecast to hit the cities of Ningde, Putian and Quanzhou as well as the provincial capital Fuzhou. Boats bump on waves along the coast of Changle, Fuzhou City, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province, July 27, 2008Typhoon Fung Wong lashed Taiwan on Monday morning, affecting the whole island with wind and rain, just a week after tropical storm Kalmaegi killed 19 people and left six others missing on the island.     Fung Wong will be the strongest tropical storm so far this year, and will strike along China's eastern and southern regions with heavy rain and strong winds, according to observatories in Fujian, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces.     The authority of the eastern Zhejiang Province has issued an alert on geological hazards in Wenzhou, Lishui and Taizhou cities from Monday midnight till Tuesday.     Under the typhoon's influence, heavy rain will continue till Wednesday in the province.     Zhejiang has evacuated 338,573 people and called back 27,656 fishing boats by late Monday, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.

  

BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on Tuesday urged Taiwan to work together with the mainland based on four principles: "Building mutual trust, laying aside disputes, seeking consensus and shelving differences, and creating a win-win situation."    He called for substantial efforts for the welfare of Chinese compatriots on both sides, to seek peace across the Taiwan Strait and create a new situation for the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.     Hu made these remarks in a meeting with Lien Chan, honorary chairman of the Kuomintang Party (KMT), his wife and his delegation, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in central Beijing. He thanked Lien for bringing to the mainland the works of a well-known Taiwan sculptor as a gift to the Beijing Olympics.     Hu recalled his first meeting with Lien three years ago, which was the first official summit between the CPC and the KMT in the past 6 decades.     At that first summit, the two parties publicized common aspirations for the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, which laid the political foundation for cooperation, he noted.     He called for resuming cross-strait talks on the basis of the "1992 Consensus" as early as possible, to resolve problems in a practical manner, make substantial efforts for the welfare of Chinese compatriots on both sides and seek peace across the strait.     "The Chinese nationality will realize a bright future in its great rejuvenation, a common glory for the compatriots of the two banks," He said. The compatriots share the same fate and belong to the same big family of the Chinese nationality, Hu said.     He expressed the hope that compatriots on both banks will further join hands to create a new environment for the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nationality, and promote the lofty cause of peace and development of mankind.     In his remarks, Lien agreed with Hu. He said the principles adopted at the KMT-CPC summit in 2005 were "of epoch-making importance" and have since been the guidelines for the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.     The welfare of the compatriots on both banks must be built upon the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, Lien said. He called for joint efforts to increase exchanges and cooperation in the fields of economics, culture, education and social security.     Also present were senior mainland officials including Wang Qishan, Ling Jihua, Chen Yunlin and Chen Shiju.

  

BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with visiting Qatar Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasim Bin Jabir Al-Thani here on Thursday. The two sides agreed to step up bilateral friendly and cooperative relations.     Wen hailed the development of bilateral ties on the basis of respect, equality and mutual benefits over the past 20 years since the two countries established diplomatic ties. He expressed China's appreciation of Qatar's adherence to the one-China policy. He will also attend the Boao Forum for Asia on April 12.
