SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Attention is now turning to the southern border after Wednesday's border closure with Canada.On Thursday, the walkway into Tijuana was nearly empty but the San Ysidro Port of Entry remains open, for the time being. “It's going to have major implications for us, particularly for us here in Southern California, if we see a closing of the U.S.-Mexico border,” says Dr. David Shirk with the University of San Diego, where he works as a professor with an area of expertise in U.S.-Mexico relations. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been criticized in recent days for not taking enough containment measures. Schools in Tijuana are reportedly now closed. If CBP observes a traveler with symptoms of COVID-19, we will refer them to the (CDC) and or DHS medical contractors for enhanced health screening. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating after an inmate died at the George Bailey Detention Facility. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were notified that an inmate identified as 63-year-old Dennis Lee Curry needed medical help inside his cell on May 11. Deputies say when they arrived, Curry complained of pain to his head and chest, but had no visible injuries. Curry was taken to a local hospital where his condition worsened and he was placed on life support before he died on the morning of May 13. Following an autopsy, it was discovered that Curry died of natural causes. The Sheriff’s Department’s homicide unit was called in to investigate, as they do with all in-custody deaths. Curry was in custody for outstanding warrants related to prior DUI and drug-related charges, according to the department. 860

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning commuters about an overnight closure on State Route 54 Thursday. According to the agency, crews will close the westbound SR-54 connector to northbound and southbound I-805 between 11 p.m. Thursday and 5 a.m. Friday. The connector will be closed so crews can complete maintenance on guardrails.Signs will be posted directing drivers to exit at Highland Avenue, turn left to eastbound SR-54 to northbound or southbound I-805. 472
