BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China's gasoline prices will be cut by 230 yuan (33.7 U.S. dollars) per tonne and diesel prices by 220 yuan per tonne from Tuesday, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced Monday.The price cuts came after a record high in price hikes in April. The previous price cut was in September 2009.Before the adjustment, the benchmark price of gasoline was 7,420 yuan per tonne and diesel 6,680 yuan per tonne.Cao Changqing, head of price department of the NDRC, said the adjustment was "timely and in a proper amount" in response to recent changes in the international crude oil prices.International crude oil prices had been rising before May, when they began to decline, the NDRC statement said. The recent drops had amounted to 4 percent, meeting price adjustment conditions, it added.Cao said the move was also based on the global and domestic economic sitations and oil supply and demand as well as the country's pricing mechanism.In 2009, China adopted an oil pricing mechanism that allows the NDRC to adjust retail fuel prices when the international crude oil price changes by more than 4 percent over 22 straight working daysThe government would raise benchmark prices for domestically-produced onshore natural gas by 230 yuan per thousand cubic meters, or 24.9 percent, to 1,155 yuan per thousand cubic meters because of relatively low prices and strong demand, he said.

URUMQI, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Internet services were resumed in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Friday, 10 months after a riot in Urumqi on July 5, the regional government said.In a document released by its press office, Xinjiang's regional government said Internet services were "fully resumed" in line with the region's needs for maintaining stability and boosting social and economic development.The move was also aimed at meeting the Xinjiang residents' requests for information, it said.Xinjiang has 7 million Internet users.The government expressed appreciation for the netizens' understanding and support when Internet connection, international long-distance calls and mobile phone text messages were cut in some areas of Xinjiang after the July 5 riot.Disruption of communication was aimed at cracking down on the riot quickly and prevent violence from happening again, as the riot was believed to have been orchestrated by separatists via the Internet, text message and long-distance telephone calls.Resumption of Internet services in Xinjiang has been a gradual process. BEIJING, April 12 -- China has made significant efforts to pursue energy and resource efficiencies to achieve sustainable development, while the nation still faces challenges in the transition to a low-carbon economy and needs integrated solution systems."China is already a world leader in critical low-carbon technologies such as solar power, heat and wind turbines, however, it should do more in some key areas, including energy systems, transport, water and food supply during the transformation," said Bjorn Stigson, president of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), a coalition of some 200 companies dealing exclusively with business and sustainable development.ChallengesChanging energy use is the biggest of China's challenges when transforming to a green economy. "Less oil, more renewable energy; less coal, more electricity," said Stigson, adding that China's explosive industrial development has placed great pressure on the consumption of energy and other resources.The large share of coal in China's energy mix is one reason why greenhouse gas emissions have climbed so sharply in recent years, though the government has invested heavily in the recycled energy sector."It (China) added more new wind power capacity than any other country last year and progress is on track for nearly 40 million households to use biogas by 2010," he said.Stigson indicated that driving up the efficiency of older power stations is a key part of the solution so far, as are opportunities to switch to natural gas and upgrade the transmission grid - but a rapid increase in the share of renewable energy and nuclear power in the coming decades will be essential.He added that another benefit of the change is that China can soon become a new energy products and services exporter in the near future.Transportation is another pillar as the transport sector is the largest and fastest-growing global emitter of CO2.
