ZHENGZHOU, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese court Wednesday upheld the death sentences with two year reprieves given to two mine bosses found responsible for a gas explosion that killed 76 people at a central China coal mine last year. The sentences were the first time mine bosses in China held responsible for a fatal accident were given the death penalty. The provincial high court in Henan Province rejected the appeals of Li Xinjun, former head of the No. 4 coal mine in the Xinhua District of Pingdingshan City, and Han Erjun, former deputy head of the mine. The court also rejected appeals filed by three other managers of the mine who were sentenced to 13 years, 15 years and life imprisonment respectively. The Intermediate Court of Pingdingshan City sentenced the five mine bosses on November 16 for neglecting safety procedures and forcing miners to work underground despite knowing the mine lacked adequate safety measures. The blast ripped through the No. 4 mine in Pingdingshan City on September 8, 2009, as 93 miners worked underground, killing 76 and injuring 15 others. The mine was under technological renovation at the time of the blast and did not have a safe production license, the court has found.China's coal mines are notorious for deadly accidents. More than 2,600 miners were killed in mine accidents in China last year, a number significantly less than in previous years.

NEW DELHI, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on Thursday reaffirmed their commitment to promote bilateral relations. In their talks, Wen said the relationship between China and India has experienced an unusual course of development over the past 60 years. However, friendly cooperation has always been the main stream, which is not only in the interest of both countries and peoples, but also helpful for peace and development of the region and the world at large. The Chinese premier, who arrived here Wednesday for his second official visit to India following the trip in 2005, pointed out that this year marked the 60th anniversary of the establishment of China-India diplomatic ties.He said he is satisfied with the progress of bilateral relations over the years and looks forward to the future. The two countries should grasp the historical opportunity to boost political and strategic mutual trust and move forward the China-India relations along the track of lasting friendship, mutually beneficial cooperation and common development, Wen added."I hope my current visit is the one to carry on the past and open a way for future, which will further enhance our win-win cooperation," Wen said.Singh said that high-level exchanges between China and India have become closer, and political and strategic mutual trust has continuously improved. He said that the comprehensive cooperation in all fields has been enhanced ever since the two countries established a strategic and cooperative partnership for peace and prosperity five years ago.At present, the two countries are at a crucial stage of development, Singh said.He said the enhancement of communications and cooperation was not only conducive to the development of India and China, but also will push forward the rejuvenation of Asia and promote world peace and development."I believe the visit of Premier Wen will give a new impetus to bilateral relations," Singh said.

BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has ordered a crackdown on pirated videos of two Chinese New Year blockbusters "Let the Bullets Fly" and "If You Are the One II."The two Chinese movies are both big hits of the New Year movie season. "Let the Bullets Fly" has raked in over 400 million yuan (59.7 million U.S. dollars) in box office since its debut on Dec. 16, while "If You are the One II" has made 200 million yuan within five days since its release. The crackdown was ordered by the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications and the General Administration of Press and Publication "in order to protect and boost the development of China's film industry," a statement from the office said Friday. The statement said the crackdown is part of a half-year national campaign against infringement of intellectual property rights (IPR), which is underway. The two departments asked local market watchdogs to enhance market inspections to weed out illegal workshops producing pirated video products.

BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- China will increase the flexibility of the yuan exchange rate and further push forward the opening-up of its financial markets, a senior central bank official said Friday.China will continue the reform of the yuan exchange rate mechanism and keep the rate basically stable at a reasonable and balanced level, Li Dongrong, assistant governor of the People's Bank of China, said at a forum. The speech was posted on the central bank's website. The Chinese yuan strengthened to a record high against the U.S. dollar Friday, the central parity rate reaching 6.5896, the second straight day it has been set below 6.6 per dollar, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading System. The currency has risen by more than 3 percent since the country's central bank announced in June 2010 it would further reform the yuan exchange rate formation mechanism to improve its flexibility.Li also said the central bank will work to expand trials of cross-border yuan settlement, to facilitate trade and investment. The central bank will promote the policy of allowing exporters to park their foreign revenue overseas, Li said, adding that it will further develop the foreign reserves market and create tools to hedge exchange rate risk.Li's speech came after the central bank announced Thursday the nation's qualified businesses and banks may settle their overseas direct investment in yuan, a move that expands the Chinese currency's global reach and eases excess domestic liquidity concerns.Li also voiced concern about loose credit globally, saying such policies are adding to capital-inflow and currency-appreciation pressures, leading to asset bubbles in some emerging economies.China still faces many challenges, Li said. "Expectations for inflation are rising. Housing prices are still high in some cities. Pressure from continuous inflows of foreign capital is increasingly evident," he said. The central bank will soundly manage money supply and maintain reasonable growth in credit, he added.
