SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Breakfast and brunch aficionados will soon have a whole new reason to flip over the most important meal of the day. "Flap Your Jacks" is bringing its own take on the traditional breakfast dish to North Park later this summer. The eatery will take over 3020 University Ave. with a bright, modern space featuring a custom art installation of "thousands" of spatulas hanging from the ceiling and a syrup-topped stack of "pancakes" on the building's facade.RELATED: 9 San Diego restaurants named most scenic in AmericaA menu packed with breakfast and brunch favorites will be offered from the kitchen, in addition to several freshly-squeezed juice options, "energy shots," and signature cocktails to jump start the day. But perhaps the most fun will be found in the breakfast joint's unique approach to pancakes, which guests can customize on their own. Each table will be outfitted with a personal griddle, inviting guests to put on their own chef hat and create their favorite pancakes from a variety of homemade batter flavors and toppings. The interactive concept aims to not only bring a new level of creativity to breakfast but also a unique conversation piece.RELATED: Puesto to move into Gordon Biersch's Mission Valley location this summer(Plus the chance to wow your friends with your pancake making skills.)But for those less confident in their flipping abilities, there are still several options, including pancakes, available from the kitchen. The two-level restaurant will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. once it opens. Currently, owners hope to debut Flap Your Jacks in late September or early October. 1642

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans presented five renderings of possible suicide barriers for the San Diego-Coronado Bridge.More than 400 people have killed themselves by jumping from the bridge since it was opened in 1969, making it the second deadliest suicide bridge in the nation behind San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. The possible suicide barriers include a large net underneath the bridge similar to the one to be put on the Golden Gate Bridge, three types of fencing, or 18-inch spikes on top of the existing barriers.Caltrans said one design will be chosen in Spring 2018.They said it will take several years to build the barrier because they need to have environmental impact studies done and get funding for it.  752

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Back in 1960, a young Amos Johnson Jr. was studying theology in Berkeley, Calif. It was the first time he was old enough to vote. Although he could cast a ballot without issue here in California, African Americans in southern states faced plenty of challenges."There were so many Jim Crow laws to keep blacks from voting in the south, all the civil rights in the south were really diminished," said Johnson. He describes the years leading up to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which bans racial discrimination in voting, as a time filled with protest and frustration around the country."It was a chaotic time, it was a time of great distress," he said. For the longtime San Diego pastor, the right to vote isn't something he's ever taken for granted. He says since being able to cast a ballot for himself, he's voted in every single election he could."I think that's where the power is. Voting is a real privilege, in my mind, it's an obligation if you want change," Johnson said. 1018

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As more San Diegans are working from home during the coronavirus outbreak, more pets are finding new families — but care extends past any quarantine orders.Helen Woodward Animal Center says the center has seen an uptick in adoptions, nearly doubling normal adoption rates at the center last weekend. Many of those new pet parents came from educational backgrounds."We met professors, teachers, and counselors who had all been asked to work remotely and suddenly had lots of hours in a quiet house," said Helen Woodward Animal Center Adoptions Services Manager Dora Dahlke. "Grad students, too, who were now doing on-line classes, were seeking the company of a new pet."RELATED: Helen Woodward launches 'critter cam' amid social distancingDahlke adds that working from home allows new pet parents to spend more time training their new family members. At Rancho Coastal Humane Society, adoptions are also up with half of people being serious and the other half looking "for something to do," according to John Van Zante with RCHS. RCHS temporarily closed on Friday.San Diego Humane Society says the center has seen an opposite effect, with adoptions down since February.RELATED: San Diego County libraries go digital to fight spread of coronavirus"Since the first week of February and through the first four days of this week, our adoption numbers have decreased significantly," Nina Thompson with SDHS said. "Of course, we wish this was not the case. Now more than ever the animals need our help, so we truly encourage the public to welcome a new family member into their home."But as Zante notes, welcoming a pet is not a two-week affair. Once schedules return to normal, that new family member will require the same care and attention."One lady asked me if she could come in and adopt a pet for two weeks then bring it back when she returns to work. Told her that probably wouldn't be good for her and definitely would not be a good idea for the pet," Zante said. "In two weeks the pet would have started to bond with her, then have its life turned upside down."RELATED: How to work out from home during San Diego's COVID-19 gym closureIn that instance, those who are looking for an animal fix can utilize other means. Helen Woodward has started a daily "critter cam" to live stream its animals and will offer educational programming. The San Diego Zoo also has several lives streams of animals in its parks and education online. 2455

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California is "getting closer" to issuing guidance on how and when to reopen theme parks across the state during the coronavirus pandemic.Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state is still working on preparing guidance on when and how theme parks across the state can reopen while fighting the spread of COVID-19.“We will make determinations in real-time for theme parks, amusement parks, and the like,” Newsom said. “There’s still many areas where we are open-ended in terms of our negotiation, making progress, and advancing in the same space.”Newsom added the state is “getting closer to concluding when and how to safely reopen those sectors.”Legoland California, Disneyland and California Adventure, Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, and Universal Studios Hollywood have each been shuttered since mid-March after stay-at-home orders were issued for the state.Downtown Disney and Universal CityWalk have reopened outside their respective theme parks with modifications.SeaWorld San Diego reopened last month on a limited basis, requiring reservations for visitors and limited access to exhibits. All of the park's coasters and rides are currently closed and some animal experiences are limited. The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park have also reopened in San Diego with limited offerings and modifications. 1346
