NEW YORK (AP) — Police have made an arrest in a mystery that's been stopping New Yorkers in their tracks for months: a wave of subway trains grinding to a halt because someone pulled the emergency brake.Isaiah Thompson, 23, of Brooklyn, was arrested late Thursday after police publicized video of a man they say pulled the emergency brake on a train in Manhattan during the Tuesday evening rush hour.Thompson was awaiting arraignment Friday on charges related to the Tuesday incident. He's also accused of committing a lewd act in the subway.Police are investigating whether he's behind about 40 other brake-pulling incidents that have cascaded into hundreds of delayed trains — and thousands of frustrated commuters — since February. Police on Thursday released images and video of a man they say rode on the outside of a car for several stops before entering the car and pulling its emergency brake and fleeing.Chief Edward Delatorre, of the NYPD's transit division, said police believe Thompson is responsible for "several incidents where he endangered subway riders (and) disrupted passenger train service."Thompson's record includes more than a dozen arrests, mostly for subway-related incidents. Nine children have been reported dead at a New Jersey nursing home in the last week, at least eight from viruses that cause respiratory illness, the state health department said.The ninth victim, described as "medically fragile with respiratory illness" by the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, died late Saturday night at a hospital, the state health department said in a statement. It is awaiting laboratory confirmation of adenoviruses in a child who died Friday.The viruses are known to persist on unclean surfaces and medical instruments, and may not be eliminated by common disinfectants, but they rarely cause severe illness in healthy people. Those with weakened immune systems, though, have a higher risk for severe disease and may remain infectious long after they recover, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. They are common in places with large groups of children, such as child-care settings, schools and summer camps.There have been 25 confirmed pediatric adenovirus cases at Wanaque, including the eight child deaths. New details in the case of 13-year-old Patricia Alatorre who was allegedly raped and murdered last week by a man from Los Angeles who she communicated with on social media. The details in those court documents are very graphic, much of which wouldn't be appropriate to release.It was in the neighborhood near Wible Rd and Hosking Ave where police say 13-year-old Patricia Alatorre was kidnapped near her home last week. Documents revealed a lot of information about how she communicated with her suspected 24-year-old killer, the kind of communication they had prior to her death, and the tragic way she lost her life."That's sad. That's unacceptable. We don't want anybody killed, but it's incredibly sad when people kill children," said Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer.Zimmer shared her thoughts after court documents were released Wednesday morning detailing the tragic events leading up to Alatorre's death. Officials said she was killed in South Bakersfield shortly after midnight on July 2nd after 24-year-old Armando Cruz from Inglewood communicated with her on social media over the course of a week. They would send explicit photos to each other, according to documents.Things would take a turn for the worst, according to Bakersfield Police Sgt. Robert Pair."As you can imagine this is a particularly sensitive case. It's involving details that is especially graphic."Documents state Cruz convinced Alatorre to meet with him to engage in explicit acts on two occasions despite knowing she was only 13. He drove from Los Angeles to Bakersfield to meet her. On the second encounter, Cruz drove her around the block as she screamed, telling him she didn't want to go with him.It was about this time documents state she was raped. She tried to get up and physically struggled with Cruz and that's when he allegedly strangled her and tied her up with duct tape. He then took her body with him but the details following are too graphic to release.On Sunday night Cruz was arrested by BPD in Los Angeles County and brought back to Bakersfield. On Tuesday he was charged with 12 felony counts."The first count is first-degree murder and in connection with first-degree murder, I charged four special circumstances which carry the penalty of life without the possibility of parole, in prison, or the death penalty," explained Zimmer.Cruz has pleaded not guilty to that first-degree murder charge and all other felony charges, including kidnapping, and aggravated sexual assault. Andrew Cuomo responded Thursday to the Supreme Court's Wednesday night ruling against the state's coronavirus restrictions on houses of worship in areas of New York City.The governor said the decision hasn't changed anything and called the court's action "irrelevant from any practical impact."However, leaders of the two groups who are plaintiffs in the case — the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and Agudath Israel, an advocacy group for the Orthodox Jewish community — disagreed, saying that the case about religious liberty and more sensible health measures.Cuomo, for his part, pointed out that the Catholic church and Orthodox Jewish synagogues in Brooklyn and Queens are no longer subject to them."I think this was really just an opportunity for the court to express its philosophy and politics," Cuomo said.The justices split 5-4 on the decision, with new conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett representing the decisive vote in the majority. It was Barrett's first publicly discernible vote as a justice.The court's three liberal justices and Chief Justice John Roberts dissented.In an unsigned order, a majority of the court said New York's restrictions "single out houses of worship for especially harsh treatment."Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Brooklyn Diocese said that the ruling is relevant far beyond the boundaries of the New York City region."There are places where, for example, I'm on the board of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C.," DiMarzio said.
