BOCA RATON, Fla. - Inside Boca Helping Hands, Mel Lazerick mans the pantry desk and hands out apples and bags of produce."I like to do things for other people because I've been fortunate," said Mel, who has devoted most of his life volunteering.At 100-years-old, Mel is the oldest volunteer and donates his time to help feed the hungry three days a week. Executive Director Greg Hazle describes Mel as an inspiration."Just to be active at that age and active helping people is an inspiring way to live," Hazle said.Mel has been handing out groceries at Boca Helping Hands for 20 years with a smile and a sense of humor."I worked it in with my golf and tennis, and I was able to find time," Mel said. "People are very nice to me, and I try to be nice to them."Mel moved from Ohio years ago and settled in South Florida. He recently celebrated his 100th birthday at Helping Hands, and has worked side-by-side with long-time buddy Harold Bader."He's very well-liked. He's very hard-working, even though he's 100," said Bader, who picks Mel up and drives him home. "It made me realize age has nothing to do with your abilities to do things, and he proves that every day.Mel has been volunteering for decades. He joined Big Brothers and Big Sisters more than 70 years ago, and he still keeps in contact with his two younger brothers."One is 65-years-old and one is 92," Mel said.Now, Mel will be honored for his service on October 20, when Boca Helping Hands will celebrate its volunteers. Bill Lee, a businessman from Franklin, has won the Republican primary for Tennessee Governor.Lee defeated three other GOP front-runners in a crowded primary field for the nomination, including Rep. Diane Black. Black had the endorsement of Vice President Mike Pence and was widely seen as President Trump's first choice for the nominee.Lee will face former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean in the general election in November. BREAKING: A judge has denied bail to Chris Watts, who is facing charges that he murdered his wife and children. More on this as it develops.FREDERICK, Colo. – Chris Watts was having an affair with a coworker, which he originally denied to police, before he allegedly killed his wife and two daughters last week, according to an affidavit for his arrest.The affidavit, which was released Monday afternoon after Watts was formally charged with nine felonies in the case, including first-degree murder and unlawful termination of a pregnancy, reveals more details about what led to Watts’ arrest in the deaths of Shanann Watts and their two daughters, Bella and Celeste. It also confirms the confession that KMGH previously reported.According to the affidavit, Shanann arrived home from a work trip just before 2 a.m. last Monday and was dropped off by a friend. But the friend became concerned when Shanann missed a 10 a.m. doctor’s appointment.The friend found Shanann’s vehicle in the garage and the car seats inside. She called Chris and asked him to come home because she was worried that Shanann may have suffered a medical episode and passed out, according to the affidavit.But police arrived before Chris did, the affidavit says. He let them inside the family’s home, where officers found Shanann’s purse on the kitchen island and a suitcase at the bottom of the stairs.Upstairs, the couple’s bed had been stripped of its sheets and blankets, but police wrote there were no signs of foul play.Chris Watts told officers under questioning that he and Shanann had been discussing “marital separation” that morning before the time he claimed he went to work. The affidavit says he “informed her he wanted to initiate the separation.” The affidavit says both were upset and crying, and says that Shanann told Chris that she would be going to a friend’s house later in the day.“Chris stated it was a civil conversation and they were not arguing but were emotional,” the affidavit says. He previously told KMGH that he and Shanann had an "emotional conversation" when they last saw each other.Chris claimed that he backed his truck up to the garage just before 5:30 a.m., loaded his tools in and left while Shanann was still in bed. Video surveillance confirms that he moved the truck around the same time but does not show what was loaded inside, according to the affidavit.The affidavit does not detail how investigators discovered that Chris had been having an affair, but says he had denied the affair in “previous interviews.”It goes on to say that two days after officers originally spoke to Chris when they were called to the home, that he asked to talk with his father before speaking further with police.“Chris said he would tell the truth after speaking with his dad,” the affidavit says.It says that he went on to claim to officers that after he told Shanann he wanted to separate, he saw Shanann strangling their daughters on a baby monitor.“Chris said he went into a rage and ultimately strangled Shanann to death,” the affidavit says next. “Chris said he loaded all three bodies onto the back seat of his work truck and took them to an oil site.”When officers showed him an aerial photo of the site, he identified the three places where the bodies could be found, the affidavit says. But these days, running her business includes a slice of uncertainty. "Very stressful and very sad," said Stephan.Next Monday, Stephan and her husband will head to court. Their landlord, Alcott Estates, L.P., says their lease has expired, but the Stephans argue they exercised an extension that gives them another 2 years. Stephan says the landlord crossed out the extension option on their lease without their approval."They should honor the rest of the lease," said Stephan.The landlord's plan: to replace their business with a drive-thru Starbucks. Right now, less than 200 feet away, is a Starbucks in the same shopping plaza. That Starbucks would reportedly be replaced by parking."This is our retirement, our nest egg ... I love Bonita. BANGOR, Me. — It’s the time of year to bundle up, pick out a tree, and make time for tradition.Despite everything this year has brought, there are moments worth celebrating, and in some places, life almost seems normal.“Everything has been canceled or changed, or you can't do this, you can't do this that, and the nice thing about our trees here is they're planted at 6 feet apart, coincidentally,” said Mac McCullen, owner of the Piper Mountain Christmas Tree Farm.The Piper Mountain Christmas Tree Farm didn’t plan for a pandemic, but they’re hoping families can find a small escape when they visit.“People could spread out, find their trees, stay safe and enjoy that kind of time together with their family, which is so important, I think, and particularly in a time like this,” McCullen said.After retiring from the Navy, McCullen and his wife took over the farm. “Our favorite part of being on the farm is, quite honestly, just being outside," he said.It’s a joy the McCullens were terrified of losing because of Covid-19.“We weren't sure that people were gonna show up. We were very pleased our first weekend to have probably better than normal weekend. And it's kind of continued to be that way. Even our weekdays, which are typically pretty slow, two or three people here and there, have been fairly steady,” said McCullen.They did everything they could to make their farm safe: putting up sneeze guards and using social distancing in their store.The couple was thankful to see the cars fill their parking lot.“This is one of the best things we come to do, to stay together,” said long-time customer Mike Cassidy.“I haven’t been to get a tree anywhere else since I’ve been born,” said Cassidy’s daughter, Mariah.These simple moments of family fun are making sure the McCullen’s legacy can live on.“It's a huge relief because not only do we have to deal with COVID, but we're a seasonal business. People don't buy Christmas trees year-round, so all of our sales happen in the month of November and December. So, if people didn't show up, oh my gosh, you know, we really would have a hard time surviving," McCullen said.It’s not just at this farm, demand for Christmas trees is skyrocketing across the country, so much so, that some farms are seeing shortages.With that jump in demand, comes a jump in price. The National Christmas Tree Association reported Americans will pay an average of 7 percent more for a tree this year than last year, and 23 percent more than they paid in 2018.But raising prices wasn’t an option at this farm.“With all the difficulties that everybody has gone through and the stress and the strain that is put on everyone, we just didn't want to add another layer to that. So, what we tried to do was stay as consistent as we could to keep our prices the same so that people could come out and know what to expect when they get here,” said McCullen.McCullen and his wife made many of the wreaths themselves. They also made candle holders from fresh fir trees and garland for your home.“I get a little emotional about it because it's just us. For my wife and I, we don't have children, so our workers the people that are here with us that support us are our family. That's what the emotional piece of it just being able to be, you know, in something together and to be able to create, you know, things that we know people enjoy,” said McCullen.For those close enough to visit, taking home a Piper Mountain tree is a tradition they won’t miss.“We love a real Christmas tree,” said Mariah Cassidy. “There’s nothing like it, and coming here always feels like home.”“And this year would be in memory of my mom, Gaila,” said Matthew Cassidy. “She used to love to come here, and she’s the main reason we keep coming here. We lost her about 3 years ago, and it’s the only way to keep her with us because Christmas was her favorite time of year.”And for more families than ever, this reminder of happiness, no matter how big or small, is one way to bring the joy of Christmas past into the present. 4102
