SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Embattled Rep. Duncan Hunter criticized Navy officials Monday for their plans to possibly remove a Navy SEAL acquitted of murder charges from the service against the wishes of President Donald Trump. Hunter commented Monday outside San Diego federal court regarding the Navy's handling of the war crimes case of Navy SEAL Chief Edward Gallagher, who was acquitted by a military jury this summer of stabbing a wounded teenage ISIS fighter to death in Mosul, Iraq, as well as other charges of attempting to kill unarmed Iraqi civilians. Hunter discussed the Gallagher case for about five minutes with reporters, but did not comment regarding his ongoing campaign fraud case, in which he's accused of misusing 0,000 in campaign funds for personal use. Hunter was indicted along with his wife on five dozen criminal counts, including wire fraud, conspiracy, and falsification of records. Hunter, who has supported Gallagher throughout his court martial and news of the trident review, said ``The military will never admit that it's wrong on anything even when it obviously is,'' calling the Gallagher case an example of ``prosecutorial and bureaucratic abuse from within the military system.'' Hunter, who told reporters he's been in contact with Gallagher, said ``What the Navy was going to do was purely punitive, just to slap (Gallagher) in the face one last time before he retired.'' Navy Secretary Richard Spencer was fired Sunday, with the Gallagher case cited in a statement from the Pentagon as the central factor in Spencer's removal. DOD spokesman Jonathan Hoffman wrote that Secretary of Defense Mark Esper asked for Spencer's resignation after Spencer privately proposed to the White House to restore Gallagher's rank, despite his opposing public stance on the issue. In a resignation letter dated this Sunday, Spencer does not reference Gallagher specifically, but states that issues with Trump played a role. ``Unfortunately it has become apparent that in this respect, I no longer share the same understanding with the Commander in Chief who appointed me, in regards to the key principle of good order and discipline,'' he wrote. ``I cannot in good conscience obey an order that I believe violates the sacred oath I took in the presence of my family, my flag and my faith to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A local meal delivery nonprofit began sales Monday for its 15th annual Mama's Pies Thanksgiving Bake Sale, which raises funds to combat hunger among residents with illnesses like cancer and HIV. During the sale, which runs through Nov. 24, residents can order pumpkin, apple, pecan and Dutch apple pies to be delivered Nov. 27, the day before Thanksgiving. Nearly 20 local bakeries and caterers are expected to bake pies for the annual fundraiser and more pie bakers are needed, according to the organization. ``Our annual bake sale is a time-honored tradition that gives community members from around the region an opportunity to give back to our neighbors in need,'' said Mama's Kitchen Executive Director Alberto Cortes. ``Whether you're purchasing a pie, making a donation or volunteering for pie delivery, every hand up counts.'' Mama's Kitchen met its goal of 0,000 raised during last year's bake sale and aims to raise at least 0,000 during this year's six-week sale, which the organization says will fund the delivery of some 51,000 meals for residents with critical illnesses. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Latinas are bearing a disproportionately high burden from the COVID-19 pandemic in San Diego County, a local nonprofit and Latina elected officials said today as they shared data from the San Diego Association of Governments.According to Latina-focused nonprofit MANA de San Diego, this comes as Latino households already had lower pre-pandemic wages, less access to health care and job-related benefits. Latinas in particular have faced increased job losses and threats of economic insecurity, they said.Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas, a member of SANDAG's Board of Directors, shared that while Latinas comprise around 17% of the county's population, around 60% of that population is working in the three industries most impacted by job loss during the pandemic -- tourism, retail and education. Latinas account for 14% of total county employment, but 20% of employment in those sectors.Data from SANDAG paints a bleak picture in regard to Latinas during the pandemic. When compared to the white population, Hispanic populations are almost three times as likely to live in areas that have been highly impacted by COVID-19 and unemployment. Additionally, Hispanic residents account for a significant portion of essential workers, and many became unemployed due to temporary business closures as a result of COVID-19.A total of 70% of Hispanic households are in ZIP codes with above average unemployment, 49% in ZIP codes with above average COVID-19 cases and 42% of Hispanic households are in ZIP codes with both above average.More than 100,000 San Diegans have tested positive for the virus, and 57% of those have been Hispanic or Latino.``As the pandemic grows in severity and stay-at-home orders are strengthened, it is the county's Latina population that will continue to face a disproportionate amount of risk and negative impacts,'' a statement from MANA de San Diego said.A Harvard, NPR and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation study also found 46% of Latino households have used up ``most or all'' of their savings during the pandemic, with an additional 15% reporting they had no savings before COVID-19 hit the United States.The same study found 66% of Latino households with children report serious problems caring for their children, including 36% who report serious problems keeping their children's education going.``MANA de San Diego will continue to do our part in creating upward social mobility for Latinas,'' said Inez Gonzalez Perezchia, MANA de San Diego's executive director. ``We will work with our elected officials joining us today and we welcome allies to join us as well.
