SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than .4 million over three months across San Diego County's ports of entry, according to the agency.CBP says the undeclared money bound for Mexico was seized between April and June at ports of entry including Calexico, Otay Mesa, Cross Border Xpress, San Ysidro, and Tecate, CBP says.One of the largest stops occurred in May when a vehicle was stopped in Otay Mesa and discovered money hidden in boxes with other items in the cargo area of the vehicle."These various interdictions by our vigilant officers are just a fraction of the regular attempts we see during the year," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Crews were able to extinguish a fire in Clairemont Friday afternoon reportedly started by a crash. According to California Highway Patrol, the blaze started on Boyd Avenue near Genesee Avenue. San Diego Police say at 5:24, a suspect hit several vehicles on Balboa and Mount Alifan Drive before taking off. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California’s new gig economy law was meant to help rideshare drivers and other freelance workers get better benefits, but some critics say it’s threatening the spirit of Christmas itself.Those critics are mall Santas, who have traditionally been hired as independent contractors through third-party bookers or employment agencies.Under Assembly Bill 5, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), those workers must be reclassified as employees with insurance and other benefits.“Lorena Gonzalez, she might kill all the Santas. She might kill the Easter Bunnies,” said Steve Schafer, the president of the San Diego chapter of the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas.Some Santas warn that bookers may go to great lengths to avoid paying employee benefits. “I don't know how someone can justify this,” said Jerry Tamburino, a Santa who has worked for more than a decade at a large commercial store.Tamburino said his agent notified him Tuesday that she would replace him and other Santas at a chain of California retail stores with out-of-state St. Nicks.“That's what [the booker is] being forced to do to address -- or evade -- or stay in business with this stupid law,” he said.Bringing in out-of-state workers to skirt AB-5 would violate California law, since labor laws apply to anyone performing work in the state, said Gonzalez’ office. But Tamburino said it would be hard for regulators to enforce.Malls and stores could hire Santas directly as independent contractors, Gonzalez’ office noted, since that kind of relationship passes AB-5’s three-pronged test.To do so, Tamburino said he would have to form his own LLC and said he doesn’t have the experience to run his own business.Tamburino said he would begin reaching out to other Santa-booking agencies in hopes they will hire him as an employee, but there’s a lot at stake: he receives about half of his annual income from Santa jobs. 1938

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Baseball is back, and that could mean potentially good news for businesses near Petco Park in downtown San Diego.On Tuesday, Major League Baseball announced a 60-game season will begin on July 23 and 24. Players are expected to return for training camps on July 1.While the MLB announcement did not specify the role of fans, multiple reports suggest the season will begin in empty ballparks with no fans in attendance.To reduce travel, the schedule will include 10 games for each team against its divisional opponents, along with 20 games against the opposite leagues corresponding geographical division.For the San Diego Padres, that will mean 10 games each against the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Colorado Rockies. The Padres will also play teams from the American League West."Major League Baseball is thrilled to announce that the 2020 season is on the horizon," MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred said in a news release. "We have provided the Players Association with a schedule to play 60 games and are excited to provide our great fans with Baseball again.Businesses near Petco Park welcomed the news.Brant Crenshaw, co-owner of the sports bar Social Tap, which is located next to the ballpark, said the pandemic has hurt business. He is hopeful that the return of baseball will lead the way for more sports to return.
