DEL MAR (CNS) - Two horses had to be taken by van from the track at Del Mar Racetrack Friday but both are expected to recover. The 5-year-old mare Magnolia's Hope was vanned off after being eased in the stretch of the fourth race, a 6 1/2-furlong claiming race on the dirt track for fillies and mares 3 years old and up which have never won two races."Though it is never good to be given a van ride, this does not appear to be a case of a life-threatening injury," Mac McBride, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's director of media, told City News Service. "We should know more about her condition tomorrow."Magnolia's Hope was fourth at the start of the race, took the lead a quarter-mile into the race and dropped to fourth in the field of seven through a half-mile.Magnolia's Hope has one victory in nine career starts, along with two second-place finishes and one third-place finish. She has earned ,260 in her career. The 4-year-old filly Velvet Queen also was vanned off after finishing third in the eighth race, a mile race on the dirt track for fillies and mares 3 years old and up which have never won ,000 once other than maiden. Velvet Queen injured a tendon, which McBride described as "not a major injury, one that equine (and human) athletes suffer in competition.""She'll need some time off to recover, but should be fine," McBride said.Velvet Queen has three victories, four second-place finishes and three third-place finishes in 16 career starts. She has earned 8,382 in her career. 1511

DENVER — A Denver couple that drove to Little Rock, Arkansas to pick up three puppies purchased online, is now warning others about a pet scam that cost them hundreds of dollars.Breckenridge and Mary Lynn Grover love French bulldogs. They had two until September when their beloved “Derby” died.“He’d eaten supper and went outside,” Breckenridge Grover said. “I heard a scream, went downstairs and saw him lying down.”He said he tried to resuscitate the dog.“He died in my arms of a heart attack,” he said. The couple told KMGH that with Derby gone, their other French bulldog, Liza Jane, became listless and depressed.Last month, they decided to look online for a new dog, as a companion for Liza Jane.Seller pours on the charmThey found a pug in Austin. Mary Lynn Grover said the owner asked them to send money via the Zelle app. They hadn’t used it before but thought they’d give it a try, then had second thoughts.“We did everything,” she said. “Wells Fargo was wonderful getting things back, saying ‘I think this guy chickened out. He didn’t even have a Zelle account.’ ”The Grovers continued their search, trying to be more cautious the second time around. They found three French bulldogs via online advertisements and said the seller poured on the charm.“He said, ‘Now you are part of my family. These were my mother’s puppies.’ He even sent us a picture of the kennel he was buying for us and said, ‘I will make dinner.’ I mean he knew me as a soft spot. He said all the right things to me.”The Denver couple drove to Arkansas. But halfway there they received a phone call.“He said, ‘Oh, by the way, could you also pick up a gift card at Walmart?’ ”Mary Lynn said that’s when the red flags went up.She said they didn’t pick up a gift card; they just kept driving.“I texted him, saying ‘We’re coming.’ We got to the house; it’s dark,” she said. There was no answer at the door, so Mary Lynn Grover called the two numbers they had for the seller, who said his name was Bill Todd.“A woman answered and asked, ‘How did you get this number?’ I described what happened. She said, ‘he did the exact same thing to me, for 0,’ ” she said. The Grovers said they are working with the Arkansas Attorney General, Better Business Bureau and Little Rock Police Department.BBB response“A lot of scams are tricky and hard to understand,” said Ezra Coopersmith, the investigations coordinator at the Better Business Bureau. “This one isn’t. It just stinks.”Coopersmith said there are more scams reported around the holidays because pets are often given as gifts. He added that scammers will often try to squeeze their victims for more cash by charging for shipping the fake pets.Second victimAurora, Colorado resident Ronald Mills said he was told the 0 he paid for a pug he found on Craigslist for his grandson would cover shipping charges. He later received an email saying it would cost ,000 to ship third class, ,100 to ship second class and ,200 to ship first class.“I called (the seller) and said, ‘I guess I’m not getting the dog and you scammed me,’ ” Mills said. “I said, ‘this is a scam.’ He said, ‘Oh sir, this is not a scam. I’m a good Christian.’ He wasn’t a Christian.”BBB adviceCoopersmith said people purchasing pets should follow these guidelines: 3334

DETROIT — The Trump campaign announced Thursday it was dropping its lawsuit over the election results in Michigan. The news comes as two Republicans try to rescind their vote that certified Wayne County's election results, however there is no "legal mechanism" for them to do so.According to a statement from Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, the campaign wanted to stop the Wayne County results from being prematurely certified.“This morning we are withdrawing our lawsuit in Michigan as a direct result of achieving the relief we sought: to stop the election in Wayne County from being prematurely certified before residents can be assured that every legal vote has been counted and every illegal vote has not been counted," Giuliani said in a statement. It is also being reported that President Donald Trump reached out to the two Republican members of the Board of Canvassers in Wayne County before they sought to rescind their votes. The two Republican members initially voted against certification Tuesday night, then reversed course and voted for certification just ahead of the deadline. Now they are trying to rescind those votes."There is no legal mechanism for them to rescind their vote. Their job is done and the next step in the process is for the Board of State Canvassers to meet and certify," said a statement from Michigan's Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.Monica Palmer, chair of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, and William Hartmann, one of two Republicans on the Board, filed signed affidavits Wednesday night demanding to rescind their "yes" certification votes."I fully believe the Wayne County vote should not be verified," Palmer said in an affidavit. "The Wayne County election had serious process flaws which deserve investigation. I continue to ask for information to assure Wayne County voters that these elections were conducted fairly and accurately."After the two Republican members of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers initially caused a deadlock Tuesday, they eventually agreed to certify the county's vote on the condition of an audit. The motion to hold another vote came following hours of public comments condemning Republican canvassers' decisions to vote against the certification."Late in the evening, I was enticed to agree to certify based on the promise that a full and independent audit would take place," Palmer wrote. "I would not have agreed to the certification but for the promise of an audit."Both Palmer and Hartmann claim they were pressured into agreeing to certify the results after being subjected to harsh comments during a lengthy public hearing."This vote was followed by public derision from our two democrat colleagues. I, and Monica Palmer, who also voted against certification, were berated and ridiculed by members of the public and other Board members," Hartman state in the affidavit. "This conduct included specious claims that I was racially motivated in my decision. This public ostracism continued for hours during which time we were not provided an opportunity to break for dinner and were not advised that we could depart and resume the hearing on another date."The first vote tied 2 to 2 along party lines. But just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Board filed a motion and voted to certify the results under the stipulation that Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson does a comprehensive audit of the election in the county. The canvassers' initial vote came after many Detroit precincts were found to be out of balance — meaning the number of votes is not in line with the number of voters. However, the variance is said to be small, with no evidence of fraud or systemic failure.President Donald Trump, who has continually made unsubstantiated claims about widespread voter fraud, has criticized the Board's decision to certify the election. All 83 counties in Michigan have voted to certify the results of the Nov. 3 election, according to Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. The Board of State Canvassers is set to meet Monday — in a hearing that is open to the public — to certify the total number of votes cast in the November general election. In December, all of Michigan's electors are expected to cast their votes for Joe Biden, who won the state by over 150,000 votes.View the affidavits below:Palmer Affidavit by WXYZ-TV Channel 7 Detroit on ScribdHartmann Affidavit by WXYZ-TV Channel 7 Detroit on ScribdThis story was originally published by Fatima Bangura and Max White on WXYZ in Detroit. 4484

DENVER (AP) -- Wil Myers homered and Garrett Richards led a committee of pitchers that scattered seven hits as the San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 6-0 on Monday night.Even as San Diego capped a series of roster additions ahead of Monday's trade deadline, it was mostly holdovers providing the pitching and pop in the Padres' latest victory.Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run triple, Eric Hosmer had an RBI double and Jurickson Profar delivered an RBI single among his three hits, helping the Padres take three of four in the series. It was San Diego's fifth shutout in Denver and first since April 12, 2017. 623
