BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China voiced its strong dissatisfaction and stern opposition to an award from the European Union (EU) to a Chinese criminal.     "We express strong dissatisfaction and stern opposition (to the award)," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a written statement in response to the award on Thursday evening.     The European Parliament (EP), a supervisory and consultative organ of the EU, announced on Thursday it would select Hu for the Sakharov Prize.     On April 3, Hu was sentenced by the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court to 3.5 years imprisonment, with one year's deprivation of political rights.     The verdict said Hu, an unemployed father aged 34 and the holder of a college degree, libeled the Chinese political and social systems, and instigated subversion of the state, which is a crime under Chinese law.     "Hu is a convicted criminal who is now in jail for subverting the state", Qin said, noting the award to Hu, in disguise of "protecting the human rights," is fabricating facts and confusing truth and has fully exposed its political attempt to interfere in China's internal affairs and infringe upon the country's judicial sovereignty.     "The fact has already proved and will continue to prove that such an act can neither change the fact of China's social development, nor deceive the European people," Qin said.

BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday spoke over telephone with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush about bilateral relations and major international issues of common concern.     The two leaders exchanged congratulations on achievements that have been made in the development of bilateral relations since the forging of diplomatic ties between China and the U.S. 30 years ago.     They expressed the hope that a series of events to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations would be successful.     President Hu agreed with Bush's positive remarks on China-U.S. relations and hailed his efforts to develop a constructive and cooperative Sino-U.S. relationship.     In the new historical period of time, China and the United States, through their joint efforts, will surely be able to stay firm in the general direction of the China-U.S. constructive and cooperative relationship and promote sound, stable, all-round and in-depth development of bilateral ties, Hu noted.     Bush, for his part, said China and the United States have engaged in good cooperation over the past 30 years which deserves congratulation.     The U.S. president said he was pleased that he has conducted satisfactory cooperation with President Hu during his presidency.     On the Middle East situation, Hu said China is seriously concerned about escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and worsening of the volatile situation in the Middle East and is deeply worried about the humanitarian crisis taking place in the Gaza Strip.     China calls on all the parties concerned to stop military operation and armed conflicts, promote the relaxation of tension in the region and create conditions for a solution to the conflict by political means, Hu said.

Our two peoples are increasing mutual understanding and friendship day by day. The strategic significance and global implications of China-U.S. relations have become all the more evident," Hu said.     "These facts have proven that the establishment and development of normal state-to-state relations between China and the United States serves the fundamental interests of our two peoples and go along with the trend of the times.     BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, heard here on Wednesday a series of reports including the implementation of the 11th five-year plan and the impact of the world financial crisis.     Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, attended the conference.     Zhang Ping, minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), delivered a report on how the Chinese government has implemented the Outline of the 11th Five-Year Program for National Economic and Social Development (2006-2010). The Second plenary session of the sixth session of the 11th Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress is held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, on Dec. 24, 2008.    The implementation has been going well, with most of the goals being reached as scheduled at the middle stage, he said.     He urged more attention to be paid on expanding domestic demand, increasing innovative ability, continuing reforms on resource prices and taxes, energy saving and emission reduction, as well as increasing the government's ability to provide public services.     Zhang also gave a report on how the intensifying impact of the world financial and economic crisis is reverberating through China's economy.     Other reports included efforts to stabilize prices and prevent price hikes addressed by NDRC vice head Zhang Mao, as well as water pollution prevention and control by Environmental Protection Minister Zhou Shengxian.
