SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- When asked if his success is surreal, comedian Jo Koy said: "I earned it."Jo Koy, whose real name is Joseph Herbert, knew he wanted to be a comedian since the age of 11. He has been in the comedy scene since the late 1980s and said he "kept grinding." That hard work paid off as Koy is now getting ready to film his third Netflix special and performs to sold-out audiences across the country. Family has been a central theme in his routine, often talking about raising his teenage son and growing up with his Filipino mom. His son, now 16, is getting involved in helping dad refine his show. "He's an associate producer on [the Netflix special] 'Comin' in Hot.' He came up with my last joke... he's the one that told me to wear what I was wearing. That outfit, he picked it out," Koy said.Koy tells 10News his mom loves the attention, "My mom always wants more!" Koy said. When asked if there was enough diversity and inclusion in comedy, the half-Filipino artist he feels like the doors are now, "open and there's a lot more opportunity, but we still have a long way to go." He's not going to get much time to check out the sights in San Diego. He's focusing on work and putting on great shows at the Civic Theater this week. "I stay working, man! I'll stop working when I die! I'm always going to do stand-up," Koy said. "This is my passion. I'll be 80 and I'll be on stage... this is what I was born to do." SAN DIEGO COUNTY (CNS) - Seven "cool zones" are scheduled to open at noon Monday in San Diego County to provide relief from high temperatures.The cool zones are air-conditioned locations throughout the hottest areas of the county:-- Borrego Springs Library, 2580 Country Club Road;-- Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane;-- Lakeside Community Center, 9841 Vine St.;-- Potrero Branch Library, 24883 Potrero Valley Road;-- Santa Ysabel Nature Center, 22135 CA-79;-- Spring Valley Community Center, 8735 Jamacha Blvd.; and-- Valley Center Branch Library, 29200 Cole Grade Road.All sites will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.COVID-19 safety measures will be in place. Anyone entering a cool zone will have their temperature taken and all visitors and staff must wear face coverings and practice social distancing.The libraries are cooling sites only; no library services are being offered.Animals, except service animals, are not permitted in cooling zones."Although we need to take steps to keep seniors safe, it still remains important to also keep them cool," said Supervisor Dianne Jacob. "Cool zones provide a refuge during the hot summer months, so it's helpful the county has developed a plan to get them open."The cool zones program is offered in partnership with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency Aging & Independence Services and San Diego Gas & Electric Co. 1424

San Diego (KGTV)- Parents at several San Diego County high schools have been notified that students could have been exposed to Pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Carlsbad High School confirmed two cases last week. Monday, parents at Mt. Carmel High School were notified that students at that school may have been exposed to the infection, though it wasn't clear how many confirmed cases there have been at the school. “This is probably the most contagious bacterial disease,” says Eric McDonald, with the county’s Health and Human Services Department. “For every one person who has it, when they expose people who have not had or been immunized, they can infect up to 16 or 17 other people.”McDonald says symptoms of a typical cold are a runny nose, low-grade fever, and a cough. For someone who may have pertussis “its the persistence of the cough that should be the number one clue.”So far this year, in San Diego County, there have been over 70 confirmed cases of pertussis. “The number of cases in San Diego are higher than most of California, particularly for infants under the age of four months.”If your child has a cough that lasts almost two weeks, they should be treated by a doctor. McDonald recommends everyone get the DTaP shot to lower the risk of getting pertussis, especially pregnant women in their third trimester. 1347

San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - Season 16 of the Bachelorette was unlike any other. The original Bachelorette, Clare, fell quickly in love with one of the men on the show and left engaged to him. Then a new Bachelorette, Tayshia was brought in. San Diego local Chasen Nick was there through all of the drama, trying to vie for each woman’s heart.Chasen, who has lived in San Diego for close to ten years, said his friends submitted him for the show. He said he was brought in during the pandemic, so he knew Clare was the Bachelorette and he knew the season would be shot in a quarantined setting at a Palm Springs resort.Tayshia sent him home on the episode that aired Nov. 24 and he said looking back, he felt more of a connection with Clare.“I have to be completely honest, I’d say Clare. I didn’t really get the opportunity to progress with Tayshia and it was just a surface level connection getting to know each other,” he said.Chasen had a few heated moments during his time on the show, including calling Tayshia a “smoke show” in front of the other guys in the house. Looking back, he says he would’ve picked a different word. He said one part of the journey he would not change, though, was his interactions with Ed, another guy in the house. Chasen and Ed had a few tense moments, but Chasen said he doesn’t regret how he reacted.“I wish Ed would have stopped and surrendered when I apologized but some people hold onto things. I think if that was different than things could’ve been different with my progression with Tayshia and our relationship,” said Chasen, saying he and Ed have reconciled since the show aired.Chasen said he’s happy to be back home in San Diego. He’s ready to focus on his career working as an account executive for Apex Systems, then get back into the dating world.“I’m onto bigger and better things right now, focus on myself, and I’ll be able to put myself out there eventually,” he said.He said since the show started airing, he’s received support from his community and strangers in the San Diego area.“So much support and love from everyone. I’ve been recognized in public and don’t be afraid to come up to me and say hi. I’d love to talk to anyone. It’s kinda cool, it’s a different feeling,” he said, referring to his newfound fame.Many Bachelor franchise alum end up on the spinoff Paradise show, where they try a second chance at love, and he said he would be open to that if the network asked him to join.“If they asked me, I’m pretty sure I’d go,” he said. 2505
