SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was stabbed to death in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter early Wednesday morning, and police say one person was detained in connection with the incident.At around 2:30 a.m., San Diego police responded to reports of a stabbing in the 400 block of Fifth Avenue, near J Street.When officers arrived, they saw a man in his 40s with a stab wound on his chest lying on the ground with a woman trying to keep pressure on the injury.The victim was rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.After the victim gave police a description of the attacker, officers spotted and then apprehended a man believed to be linked to the stabbing.ABC 10News learned the man was detained for questioning.SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said the incident is under investigation, but it appeared the stabbing took place following an exchange of words between the victim and his friends and another group of people. 940

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man who led police on pursuit was arrested early Monday morning after spending 45 minutes on the roof of a Webster home.San Diego police officers attempted to stop a dark colored Kia shortly before 12:30 a.m. on 49th and Federal Blvd. after the driver was seen driving recklessly.The driver crashed into an embankment and pole on Marilou Road, and that's when police said the suspect jumped out and took off running.Police chased the man for several blocks, even jumping fences and running through backyards. The suspect then climb on top of a home, leaping across rooftops trying to get away, but was surrounded.The suspect sat on the rooftop on Brookline street and told officers he would not come down until they put their guns down.The suspect eventually surrendered 45 minutes later. Firefighters were called in to put a ladder up and help get him down.He's being evaluated for DUI and faces felony evading charges. 950

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A pillar to the community and a San Diego civic icon Reverend George Walker Smith has died at 91. For six decades, Rev. Smith was a trailblazing leader in the African American community. Smith also led Christ United Presbyterian Church of San Diego for decades. Those who were lucky enough to cross paths with him say he was kind to all. "We kind of thought of Rev. Smith as the black godfather of San Diego, and of this church, because he helped so many people," said Delores McNeely, a church member of 30 years. He was the first African American to be elected in the city when he won the race for the San Diego Board of Education in 1963. Rev. Smith started the Catfish Club, whose weekly lunches were a gathering spot for those interested in civic or political issues. "All the political leaders in the community came, and we had this huge forum, and they listened to him. And if something were going on in the community, the first person that they would call was Rev. Smith," said McNeely.McNeely says the forums started at the church but then moved to Channel 10 when attendance got too large. "His legacy is going to help the community to grow, everything he did, and wanted to do," said McNeely.Members of the congregation spoke to 10News Sunday. "He was a person who would never say no to anyone if you asked him to do. If he couldn't do it, he found someone who could," Jewel Kelley, a member of the church said. Rev. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A mom shopping with her one-year-son leapt into action when she found a car burglar inside her SUV in University City.On Wednesday morning at the Vons on Governor Drive, Gloria spent about 15 minutes shopping inside. Her son was sitting in the cart. As soon as she pushed the loaded cart out of the store, her eyes zeroed in on her SUV, parked close to the store."I was kind of in disbelief. Someone was in the car and the passenger door was wide open," said Gloria.Gloria saw a man rummaging through her center console and started screaming. She pushed every button on her key fob."The panic alarm actually went off. Scared the living daylights out of him, and he took off running," said Gloria. Moments after, she found her phone in her purse and starting recording. Surveillance video shows her take off in his direction. Holding tightly to her son, she continued to scream. Still pushing the cart, she followed him. "Definitely adrenaline and pure anger," said Gloria.Gloria has been a victim of three car burglaries in the past five years."I'm going to get you this time. You're not going to do this to anybody else," Gloria kept thinking. Less than a minute later, she followed him across the parking lot to a U-Haul truck before he drove off. She got a photo of him and the license plate. Possibly realizing Gloria got video, the guy ditched the truck, which was recovered hours later. She says police told her it was loaded with stuff: some of her belongings and other items, likely stolen. Police say the license plate led them to a local address, but the man wasn't there.
