SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former Yuma Police officer testified Tuesday in his trial for the rape of a woman in Kensington.Jared Elkins, 34, raped his wife’s cousin after a family gathering at her home on Marlborough Drive last year, prosecutors said. The group had been out to dinner, then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at home.She testified last week, saying she didn’t yell during the alleged attack because Elkins threatened to kill her. His wife was asleep across the hall at the time.After the encounter, the woman said she ran into her mother’s room for help, and they both escaped out a window.At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Police said Elkins told them that the sex was consensual and the rape charges were made out of guilt.Elkins told the jury the alleged victim started flirting with him after everyone else went to sleep.“There was mutual flirtations between the two of us and we were being adults,” said Elkins, who testified the woman was “cuddling, almost snuggling” with him.“She said yeah, it was surprising to me; I was excited a younger attractive woman, you know, it kind of confirmed everything on the couch,” Elkins said.Elkins resigned from the Yuma Police Department in 2017. He is facing nine felony counts including forcible rape and could serve 14 years in prison if convicted.City News Service contributed to this report. 1462

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family killed in a Logan Heights house fire in October was laid to rest Friday.Jose Antonio Romero Mayo, 44, Nicolasa Mayo-Cortes, 46, and daughter Iris, 21, all died from their injuries following the Oct. 13 fire.Funeral services were held at Saint Anthony of Padua in National City Friday morning.RELATED: Family's oldest son charged in Logan Heights house fire deathsTwo other surviving family members, Wendy and Angel, were out of the hospital and in attendance.After the church service, a funeral procession drove by the house the family once called home. Loved ones shared a moment in front of a memorial placed outside of the charred, boarded-up house on Clay Avenue.Friends of Mayo-Cortes described her as a hardworking mother who went through many hardships but was always resilient. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - The first rain storms of the season moved into the region Tuesday, bringing significant rainfall throughout San Diego County along with the possibility of snow in the mountains. A low pressure system to the south will make its way north and meet a colder, low pressure system that is making its way down the coast, National Weather Service meteorologist Miguel Miller said. These conditions are expected to produce rain continuing through Thursday night, with the heaviest rainfall expected on Wednesday, Miller said. An urban and small stream flood advisory was also issued through 3:15 p.m. for areas of San Diego County, including Chula Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Temecula, El Cajon, Vista, Encinitas, National City, La Mesa, and Poway.Rainfall amounts through Thursday night are expected to be around 2 inches in the mountains, between 1 and 1.5 inches in the inland valleys, around 1 inch near the coast and less than a quarter-inch in the deserts, according to the NWS. Snow levels will drop to 6,000 feet by Wednesday evening, with several inches of snow expected by late Thursday, Miller said. Temperatures are expected to remain about 5-10 degrees above average Tuesday before dropping to 15-20 degrees below average on Wednesday, he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 25-year-old man has been taken into custody after his 53-year-old mother was found dead Monday evening in the College West neighborhood. Officers were called to the 4800 block of Collwood Boulevard around 4:40 p.m. Monday night after receiving reports of a deceased person inside a home. According to San Diego Police, family members tried to contact the 53-year-old woman who lived inside, but had not been able to contact her for several days.When officers entered the home, they found the woman dead.“Information provided by family members led to the 25 year-old son being located at an area hospital where he was receiving treatment for injuries he sustained to his hands,” police said.The man has been taken into custody and will be transported to headquarters for processing as a possible suspect, police said. 846

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A father and son heading to see the border wall became stuck in a flooded stretch of the Tijuana River Valley Thursday.Two men from Idaho and North Dakota told 10News, they were on a father-son vacation in San Diego. They said they came down to the Tijuana River Valley to see the border wall with their own eyes. But the out-of-towners did not know about the notorious dip in Saturn Boulevard.According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, the men ignored road closure signs in the flooded area, and drove through the water.Their truck made it halfway across before it got stuck in five feet of water.After the water reached the truck’s window, the 75-year-old father — who was the driver — climbed out and waited on his roof for help to arrive. No injuries were reported.
