GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers overnight killed the bear they suspect attacked a 5-year-old girl early Sunday morning near Grand Junction.CPW says they saw the bear they believe to have been involved in the attack walking up to a home about a half-mile away from where the girl was attacked in east Orchard Mesa. The bear was killed before it entered one of three traps that had been set.The agency said officers are “confident” the bear is the same one involved in the attack based on its behavior, but they will continue searching for other bears in the area.The bear’s carcass will be transported to the CPW Wildlife Health Laboratory in Fort Collins for a necropsy."The necropsy, along with DNA results will provide the confirmation, but we are confident we have the right bear," said Area Wildlife Manager Kirk Oldham. "However, we will leave all three traps in place for the time being out of an abundance of caution."The girl, 5-year-old Kimberly Cyr, had gone outside around 2:30 a.m. Sunday to investigate noises she thought were coming from her dog, her mother told CPW officials.But the mother heard her daughter screaming and went outside to see a “large black bear” dragging her daughter. The bear dropped the girl when her mother screamed.Cyr was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, where she received around six-dozen stitches, her mother said. Health care workers in remote regions can now get free pandemic response training online. It's a new program through Project HOPE. So far, more than 15,000 people in 119 countries and counting have completed the courses.“We started with a hospital ship that we’re best known for back in the 60s that was donated by then President Eisenhower to spread peace around the world by spreading health around the world,” Dr. Tom Kenyon, chief health officer for Project HOPE, said.In the late 1950s Project HOPE was started with a Navy Ship and a dream. Project HOPE has dedicated itself to global health, development and emergency response over its more than 60-year history.“Lowering maternal and newborn mortality, lowering mortality from various infections disease like HIV and TB also non communicable disease which are prevalent now,” Kenton said of the organization’s goals.In fact, in the early parts of 2020, Project HOPE was already working in Wuhan, China, training nurses when staff called saying they were running out of personal protective equipment. They stepped in and helped them access what they needed."Health workers are a big chain in the transmission from the health centers to the community,” Kenyon said. “They often bring it home, unknowingly. That’s not only true for COVID, but for other diseases as well.”As the virus started spreading, they realized they not only needed more people to be trained, but they needed to reach more people around the world.“It's amazing now how social media communications we have now, how efficient we can be in training,” Kenyon said. “We’ve discovered it a tremendous medium.
