It's been one week since 13-year-old Jayme Closs went missing from her home in Wisconsin, and now her school will hold an event aimed at helping the community cope with her disappearance.The Barron Area School District will hold "A Gathering of Hope" Monday evening at Riverview Middle School, where CNN affiliate WCCO-TV says Jayme was a dancer and cross-country runner. It’s all hands on deck during harvest time at Infinite Harvest.This indoor, hydroponic farm in Colorado specializes in microgreens, young vegetables grown in a controlled environment and cropped shortly after they’ve sprouted.Production manager Luke Blough says microgreen sales have quadrupled in the past nine months with more consumers becoming more health, sustainability and environmentally conscious.“We kind of check all three of those boxes,” he said. “Our microgreen products are very nutrient dense; very flavorful. They’re sustainably grown locally and we have less environmental impact.”There's less environmental impact because of the way they’re grown. Stacking shelves of microgreens and growing them under LED lights means using about 95% less land than traditional farming.This method is catching on nationally.“Consumers are becoming more interested in microgreens,” said Sarah A. Johnson, Ph.D., with the food science and human nutrition department at Colorado State University. “They’re a relatively new agricultural food crop.”.In addition to the nutritional and environmental benefits, Johnson’s team found that microgreens could have major impacts in urban areas by making fresh produce more easily available to areas considered food deserts.“I think they have a lot of potential to kind of pop up all over the place,” she said. “Not just with these large companies but with smaller sort of pop-up, start-up companies as well.”As more farmers look to avoid unpredictable weather and leave less of a carbon footprint, experts predict microgreen consumption will continue growing nationwide“There are a couple of things we can do in a controlled environment that you can’t really do when you’re at the mercy of Mother Nature,” Blough said. 1768
INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis family is pleading for help to find the man they say broke into their home and ended up in bed with two little girls. Veronica Mildenberg says her 6-year-old and 10-year-old daughters were sleeping in the top bunk of her bed when the stranger climbed up with them.The 10-year-old woke up and screamed. “He must have climbed up the stairwell and got in bed with her. It's Halloween, a great time to be scared, right? But for many of us fears aren't fun and games. You might think it's best to stay away from the things that scare you the most. But one expert says doing the opposite may help you more.How about if you're afraid of germs?"You could touch the inside of the toilet and you can rub that on your face," says Psychologist Dr. David Shanley.It sounds gross, and if you're afraid of germs the thought is downright terrifying.But Shanley, who helps people fight their phobias, says facing your fears head on could be the key to getting over them. The first step is to asses exactly what they're fearing and what they're doing to avoid it. Then determine how much exposure to that fear a client can take. For example, a fear of dogs. "If they take their fear head on and go to the dog park straight out then they're going to save themselves a lot of time of working up step-by-step," Shanley says. Not everyone can go that far that fast. But Shanley says there has to be some level of exposure to make progress. Not just to fears on the outside, but on the inside. "Part of the exposure is actually flooding them to those scariest thoughts," Dr. Shanley says. If a person were afraid of elevators or tight spaces, overcoming the fear is about more than riding from floor to floor. "You more want them actually thinking all the worst case scenarios so that they know that the next time they need to get into the elevator they can do it whether they are having happy thoughts or negative thoughts," Shanley says. And when facing a fear of heights, the same principles apply. "I would ask the person to, all right can you climb up here?" Shanley says. "And then as they are climbing up I would also be telling them, all right now look down and think about wow that's a long ways down and what if I fell?" Dr. Shanley says these are all things you can try on your own, and repetition is key."Without it their success rate of the treatment is a lot less," Shanley says. And don't be shy. Shanley says if you don't face your deepest, darkest fear, it could come back. Something to keep in perspective when things get a little dirty."I don't have to like it.
