SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died late Saturday night after a home caught fire in Paradise Hills.Fire crews say the fire erupted just after 10 p.m. on Calle Cumbre Street.Neighbors in the area reported hearing a loud boom before flames could be seen bursting from the homeFirefighters say neighbors then began breaking windows in an attempt to get the people trapped inside the home out.The two men inside the home were taken to the hospital where one of them died. The second man is in unknown condition.Fire investigators have ruled the fire accidental.  566

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego man is back in the U.S. after being held in a Mexican jail since Sunday. Rob Thomas, a Marine veteran and avid surfer, had been kept in custody after Mexican authorities determined he was at fault for a traffic collision that sent four people to the hospital, according to friends and local news outlet Rosarito en la Noticia.Under Mexican law, drivers found at fault in a collision can be detained until they prove they can cover the estimated costs of the crash. Thomas did not have valid car insurance in Mexico, so authorities demanded a cash bond, said longtime friend Mikey “Beats” Beltran. The amount of the bond was negotiated by an attorney representing Thomas, but it could be ,000 to ,000, friends said. “This is without a doubt a traveler’s worst nightmare, ending up in a foreign jail surrounded by people that don’t speak your language,” he said. “They don’t feed the people in detention, and so friends of ours that are down there, they’ve had to feed him daily.”Thomas was in Rosarito on a surf trip. After eating tacos with his girlfriend, Thomas made a left turn in his pickup truck and collided with a passenger van Sunday around 5:10 p.m. on Highway Rosarito-Ensenada near the Las Rocas hotel.Two adults and two children in the passenger van were taken to the hospital, Rosarito en la Noticia reported.Thomas' mother, Pauline Thomas, said the U.S. Consulate provided a list of attorneys, but otherwise not much help."I’ve cried so much, my eyes are almost swollen shut," she said by phone from Kansas. "I need him to be safe. He’s my baby."Friends scrambled to come up with the money to get Thomas out of custody and launched a GoFundMe campaign.“The passenger van, they’re saying that thing is worth ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Navy SEAL was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to molesting his relative in California.Gregory Kyle Seerden pled guilty to seven counts of molestation following a preliminary hearing in which the victim testified. According to the court, the abuse happened while Seerden was a Navy SEAL stationed in San Diego. "We can start healing today by making him answer for his crimes every day for the rest of his pathetic existence," Alicia Reppert said, reading a prepared testimony.Reppert is Seerden's ex-wife. She said on the stand, that her daughter endured abuse from her father, starting from when she was five years old. The Deputy District Attorney said the girl mustered up the courage to report her father's crimes in 2015. At the pretrial hearing in May, the now 12-year-old testified in front of a judge. The testimony was so powerful, Seerden pleaded guilty to seven of the nine counts of molestation, without going to trial. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison. Seerden is already serving a 27-year federal sentence for manufacturing child pornography. In 2017, Seerden was accused of of raping a woman while serving in the Navy in Virginia. When authorities searched his cell phone, they found child pornography, including a video of him abusing another 5 year-old relative, while she slept. "In California, you can use that evidence to corroborate molestation in this case," Deputy DA Amy Colby said. Seerden was arrested on April 3, 2017, for the case involving child pornography. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Kensington sake bar and restaurant is getting creative to survive the latest COVID-19 shutdown orders.Like for so many businesses, the pandemic has been served up economic pain at Tanuki Sake Bar, where revenues have been cut in half.The most recent COVID-19 shutdown orders were a gut punch for Kai Ishii’s father, who opened the restaurant more than two years ago."Definitely disappointment on his part, and worry for his employees and the business," said Ishii.With the restaurant being takeout only, Ishii's family can only afford hours for one of their four servers."The biggest thing is the uncertainty of what’s next," said Ishii.What Ishii did do next is inspired partly from fast food."Definitely got some inspiration from In-N-Out, when they ask you, 'Do you want to eat in the car or take it home?"" said Ishii.But he knows the concept of in-car dining would only go so far."We wanted to give them something to occupy their attention," said Ishii.So Ishii bought an 18-foot-tall movie screen and a projector, and set them up in their modest parking lot — just 6 spaces. Last weekend, the sake bar started offering a pop-up Japanese movies and anime to go with dinner."We found a way to put audio in the car, so it's a lot more immersive," said Ishii.Each car can use wireless speakers for sound. The dinner for two and movie costs .Their first screening Saturday was sold out, and so is another screening later this week. Ishii is hoping to show two or three films a week, and its not just about the extra revenue."We have a lot of wonderful loyal customers, and we’re hoping the big screen will add to that ... create foot traffic, create buzz with the cars driving by and bring more attention for the restaurant and takeout orders ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new report from the Auditor of the State of California questions whether the San Diego County Sheriff's Department has implemented recommendations outlined in a previous audit.The report "Recommendations Not Fully Implemented After One Year" presented the status of recommendations that are more than one year old and have not been fully implemented by the audited entities.According to the report, a 2017 audit about Concealed Carry Weapon Licenses, made several recommendations regarding the San Diego County Sheriff's Department's program.The recommendations included, "To ensure that it follows state law's requirements for revoking licenses, San Diego should immediately revoke CCW licenses and should then inform Justice that it has revoked licenses whenever license holders become prohibited persons. Additionally, San Diego should notify Justice when it suspends a license, or a license is surrendered."The 2017 audit also recommended, "To ensure that it maximizes allowable revenue from its CCW program, San Diego should immediately pursue increasing its initial, renewal, and amendment fees to the maximum amounts allowable under state law."According to the Auditor's newly released report, the estimated date of completion of those recommendations is unknown.10News contacted the San Diego County Sheriff's Department to ask about the status of the recommendations. It turns out the Sheriff's Department did make changes.In a statement, a spokesperson for the department wrote: "In 2017, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department was made aware of the findings and recommendations by the State Auditor from the report on Concealed Weapons Licenses. The recommendations that were suggested were taken into account and changes were implemented in 2018. The changes reflected all of the recommendations except for the proposed increase of fees. The Sheriff's Department did not agree on placing a high fee that would otherwise prevent the issuance of a CCW for a qualified and genuine necessity solely because of financial hardship. The adjustment of those fees is now mandated by the state with the passage and implementation of Assembly Bill 1297 this year. Sheriff's Financial Services is currently looking at our business practice for reviewing the fees collected. That fee will ultimately need to be approved by the Board of Supervisors."The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is the local agency tasked with approving or denying CCWs.Team 10 previously reported about a spike in CCW permits.In 2017, the department approved 171 licenses. In 2018, the department approved 707, a more than 300 percent increase from the year before. In the first seven months of 2019, the department has already authorized 767. 2754
