SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was stabbed in the hands and pistol whipped in North Park Saturday after refusing to carry drugs from Mexico into the United States, police said.The victim, 49, was pressured by six friends earlier in the day to transport drugs from Mexico across the border, but he refused, said Officer Tony Martinez of the San Diego Police Department.They saw him later at 3 a.m. Saturday in the 4000 block of 30th Street, Martinez said."They got into a confrontation with him, and during the confrontation the victim was stabbed in both hands and pistol whipped," the officer said.The victim received a laceration to both hands and a laceration to the top of the head from being pistol whipped, Martinez said.The main suspect was a man known to the victim, he said. The other suspects were three men and two women. They all fled in a white Kia SUV with Mexico plates.Mid City Division detectives will be handling the investigation. 950

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person died today in a traffic collision involving a motorcycle and an SUV near Escondido.The crash happened at 4 p.m. Saturday on Birch Avenue and Bear Valley Parkway in an unincorporated area outside Escondido, the California Highway Patrol said.An Acura MDX SUV and a motorcycle collided, killing one person, the CHP said. It was not immediately known whether the victim was on the motorcycle or in the SUV.The accident forced the closure of northbound Bear Valley at Idaho Avenue. Traffic on southbound Bear Valley was being diverted to Birch, the CHP said. 589

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con and repeat DUI offender who was drunk when he drove on the shoulder of the freeway near Tierrasanta, striking and killing a tow-truck operator tending to a disabled trash truck, was sentenced Friday to 15 years to life in prison plus 10 years.Michael Gilbert Gray, 50, pleaded guilty in August to second-degree murder and admitted two serious felony priors, including a domestic violence conviction for hitting his wife and rupturing her eardrum.Charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and leaving the scene of the Feb. 23, 2017, collision that killed 55-year-old Fred Griffith were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.Griffith's sister, Danelle Ragsdale, said in a letter to the court that her brother -- a single father to three boys -- was "needlessly ripped from all of us."Ragsdale said Griffith and his three sons -- ages 15, 18, and 21 -- were "inseparable.""He (Fred) worked hard for the boys so they would have a good life," the victim's sister said in the letter read in court by Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright. "Fred was a ship in the night who would help you find your way to safety."Griffith's friend, Randall Resch, wrote in a letter that the victim was a "gentle giant" and one of the best heavy-duty tow-truck operators in San Diego County."Fred touched the hearts of everyone who knew him," his friend said. "To me, Fred died a hero's death."Before he was sentenced, Gray apologized to the victim's family and said he took full responsibility for Griffith's death.Witnesses testified during a preliminary hearing last year that they saw Gray's Ford Expedition swerve onto the shoulder of eastbound state Route 52 and narrowly miss a large disabled commercial trash truck before striking Griffith, who was standing outside his tow truck in front of the trash truck.Off-duty sheriff's Detective Mark Palmer testified that he activated his lights and siren in his vehicle and followed Gray's SUV before pulling him over a short distance down the highway.The defendant -- who had a half-empty bottle of vodka in his car -- was still showing signs of intoxication three hours after the crash, said Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright. Authorities said Gray's blood-alcohol content was .27 percent -- more than three times the legal limit -- at the time of the accident. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man whose altercation with four off-duty San Diego police officers in the parking lot of a Grantville bar drew attention from local activists alleging excessive force was sentenced Thursday to a three year probation term in connection with cocaine and firearm possession, which includes 90 days in jail and nine months to be served in a work furlough program.Jonathan Felix, 29, pleaded guilty last month to possession of a loaded firearm and cocaine, in connection with the Nov. 7, 2018, altercation outside McGregor's Grill and Ale House just before 2 a.m.The case generated substantial public interest regarding the use of police force rather than for the felony case, in which Felix was accused but never charged with pointing the gun at the officers, prompting them to tackle him to the ground and strike him several times until they were able to seize the pistol, according to prosecutors.RELATED: San Diego man says off-duty SDPD officers assaulted himThe blows rendered Felix unconscious, and left him with a fractured pelvis, fractured hand and cuts and bruising to his head, while one of the officers testified that he broke his hand punching the defendant.In addition to possessing cocaine, Felix was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to theft and drug-related convictions out of Arizona, according to Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon.Following his 90 days in custody, Felix will continue working during the day at Greystone Prime Steakhouse & Seafood in the Gaslamp Quarter, where he was employed at the time of his arrest. San Diego Superior Court Judge Polly H. Shamoon imposed a suspended four-year prison sentence, meaning Felix could head to prison if he violates the terms of his probation.At a preliminary hearing in February, Officer Anthony Duncan testified that after he and other officers departed McGregor's, they noticed Felix leaving the premises and returning to the parking lot on several separate occasions, both in his Dodge Durango and on a bicycle. He said the officers were concerned that Felix was "casing" vehicles, possibly to break into or steal cars.Felix was exhibiting "odd behavior" and "something didn't feel right (about him)," Duncan said.Officer Jose Rodriguez, who was at the bar with the other men but left before the altercation with Felix, testified that he also felt Felix was looking into vehicles parked in the lot.Despite their concerns, none of the officers called for assistance from on-duty law enforcement until after they restrained Felix, according to Duncan.Duncan said that he approached Felix, at which point the defendant produced a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and pointed it at him, prompting all four officers to draw firearms on Felix.Surveillance footage from the parking lot of the business captured the physical altercation between the men, but not the purported standoff, which was blocked from view by a parked car. The defendant, who was sitting on his bicycle at the time, backpedaled away from the men, who followed and tackled him to the ground, according to surveillance footage.Felix told investigators after being arrested that he believed the group of men, who he said never identified themselves as law enforcement officers that night, may have been casing his Durango or looking to start trouble.Defense attorney Alicia Freeze argued that her client drew his gun out of concern for his safety, but denied that he ever pointed the weapon at the group. Speaking with reporters outside court following the sentencing hearing, she said she felt the officers used "unlawful force" in subduing Felix.Runyon reiterated outside court that Felix pointed a gun at the officers, "ignored several commands" to drop his gun, and "did not give up the gun immediately" even after being taken to the ground.Along with Duncan, the altercation included fellow San Diego officers Nicholas Dabbaghian, Frank Bigler and Ross Bainbridge. 3956

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was seriously injured when she crossed into the path of an oncoming car in Linda Vista, police said Saturday.A 72-year-old woman had just gotten off a bus at a stop on Linda Vista Road near Tait Street around 5:20 p.m., according to San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims. She walked to a marked crosswalk and began to walk across the street against the signal, Heims said.At the same time, the driver of an approaching Toyota did not stop for the pedestrian and hit her, Heims said.Paramedics were dispatched and the pedestrian was taken to a hospital. She suffered extensive head injuries, Heims said.Police don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. 700
