HELSINKI, June 25 (Xinhua) -- China and Finland on Thursday agreed to push for closer economic cooperation to tackle the ongoing global financial crisis.     Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang unveiled broad measures to work together with Finland to fight the global financial crisis after meeting with Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen. Li and Vanhanen joined a signing ceremony of several government and business agreements between the two sides, under which Li said China would purchase Finland's advanced environment-friendly technologies.     China would also send a large group of entrepreneurs to Finland within two weeks to make major purchases of Finnish goods, according to Li. BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese military authorities pledged Sunday to tighten supervision on senior and middle ranking officers, through strict punishment in cases of breach of duty and regular inspection of their work.     The military will adopt a strict system to investigate and punish senior officers for breaching duty or making mistakes, said a circular issued by the Central Military Commission (CMC) on Sunday.     The document, approved by CMC Chairman Hu Jintao, said it will also introduce a system of accountability by regular inspection on the work of officers at army corps level.     Military units higher than regiment level of the People's Liberation Army must review the work of their commanding officers at least once a year, it added.     Commanding officers from regiment to army corps levels are usually regarded as middle and senior ranking PLA officers.     It will tighten inspection on senior officers to see whether they strictly follow the military disciplines and show loyalty to the Communist Party of China.     The circular called on the officers to keep a communist nature. "In the face of a complicated ideological situation, senior military officers must stick to their faith and keep a firm political stance," it said.     They should devote themselves to building up the country's military capacity to win local wars in the information age, it said.     The document said that the supervision and inspection will focus on any examples of extravagance and waste by military officers.

SHANGHAI, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin on Sunday mourned the death of Dong Yinchu, honorary chairman of the China Zhi Gong Party central committee, who died of illness on Tuesday at the age of 95.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended Dong's funeral in Shanghai with Yu Zhengsheng, Communist Party chief of the city, and expressed condolences to Dong's family. WASHINGTON, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming has called for stronger economic ties between China and the United States.     "Economic links have always been an important basis for the China-U.S. relationship, and the growth in trade between the two countries has been robust since the establishment of normal diplomatic relations," Chen wrote in an article published in The Wall Street Journal on Monday.     Currently, China and the U.S. are each other's second-largest trading partner with the volume of the two-way trade in goods exceeding 300 billion U.S. dollars.     But the commercial ties between the two nations have been affected by the global financial crisis.     Chinese statistics show bilateral trade dropped 6.8 percent, and U.S. investment in China slumped 19.4 percent, on a year-on-year basis in the fourth quarter of last year and the first quarter of this year, Chen wrote.     He was scheduled to meet with his U.S. counterpart on Monday to discuss bilateral trade and investment measures.     "History tells us that the more serious a crisis becomes, the more committed we must be to openness and cooperation," Chen wrote. "Regrettably, however, trade measures by the U.S. against China are on the rise."     Recently, American industries have petitioned the U.S. government for antidumping investigations, and for investigations under the World Trade Organization's "special safeguard provision," which could restrict imports of Chinese products, he said.     "This will seriously test China-U.S. economic and trade relations," he added.     The Chinese commerce minister noted that the need to foster positive Sino-U.S. ties has never been greater.     He also called on both sides to step up cooperation in trade and investment issues, and explore and establish new possibilities for cooperation in such areas as agriculture, new and high technology, finance, energy and the environment.     "Dialogue and communication also need to be intensified concerning multilateral and regional trade and economic affairs," he said.     To that end, Chen put forth four proposals:     -- To seize the opportunity for cooperation, and work together to tackle the crisis;     -- To mutually open markets to expand trade and investment;     -- To strengthen bilateral dialogue and resolve differences properly;     -- To safeguard the environment for trade and advance the Doha Round.     Chen also said now it's no time for protectionism.     The U.S. and China, as the largest and the third-largest trading countries in the world respectively, should take the lead in following up the consensus reached at the G20 Summit in London and refrain from formulating any new trade protection policies before the end of 2010, he wrote.     "A positive, cooperative and comprehensive Sino-American relationship will surely bring new prosperity and development to both economies," he added.     In his article, he also expressed hope and confidence that bilateral trade would rise to a new high and exceed 500 billion U.S. dollars in the next five years, growing in a more balanced way.

ASHGABAT, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said here on Wednesday that the joint natural gas projects between China and Turkmenistan serve the fundamental and long-term interest of both peoples.     Li made the remarks during a video conference with the Chinese and Turkmenistan's workers of China National Petroleum Corporation International (Turkmenistan). The workers had been busy with constructing a vast natural gas processing facility in a natural gas field some 700 kilometers southeast of Turkmenistan's capital Ashgabat.
