Refoundry helps give formerly incarcerated people a second chance. Now they’re giving back in a special way, helping protect people behind bars during the pandemic.Refoundry's mission is giving people a second chance by providing skills and opportunity. The nonprofit, created by Cisco Pinedo and Tommy Safian, trains formerly incarcerated people to repurpose discarded materials into home furnishings. Their program is structured into three stages over the period, starting off with placement in a living wage job ending with mentorship that could lead to business ownership.So far, 10 businesses have started with the help of Refoundry, giving jobs to more than 125 people.Back in 2016, Scripps station WPIX in New York visited Refoundry in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Now, they’re adding another effort to their outreach as a result of the pandemic and putting the Refoundry onsite program on hiatus during the lockdown."We launched something called ‘Makers Make Masks,’ that enlists formerly incarcerated people that are homebound because of the pandemic to help combat a public health crisis by sewing reusable washable masks for the most vulnerable people in our society the incarcerated and the homeless," explained Safian.The masks are being donated to homeless support services in Los Angeles and at Rikers Island in New York, where more than 850 masks have already been delivered.The Refoundry set up 20 formerly incarcerated workers with sewing machines, pre-cut fabrics, technical support and training with the help of grants and donations.“This allows… people with the opportunity to demonstrate their value,” explained Safian “to themselves and to their community and to society ... it really does mean a lot."Once the pandemic is over, Refoundry plans on launching a second location Los Angeles and moving into a new space at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Ohio Department of Agriculture issued a warning about an insect that could kill wine in Ohio.The spotted lanternfly can cause significant damage to some plants and has been seen in Pennsylvania. According to the Department of Agriculture, the insect is fond of grape and fruit trees, hops, blueberry, oak, pine, poplar and walnut. Adult spotted lanterflies usually eat grapevines, while nymphs eat multiple types of plants. The insects eat stems and leaves, which can cause sap to bleed and reduce photosynthesis, which can eventually kill the plant.Spotted lanternflies can be spotted now through November. The insect can be identified by its red body, roughly a half-inch in size, with black stripes and white dots. Later this summer until November, the insect is in the adult moth stage. The adults are larger, roughly one inch in size, with black bodies and brightly colored wings.The insect has not been confirmed in Ohio yet but residents who believe they have spotted one are asked to report it online or by calling 614-728-640. Daisy Muniz works at the same elementary school she attended while growing up in Reedley, California. "I moved here from Mexico when I was five, and I've been in Reedley all my life," said Muniz. Reedley is a rural town in central California that has seen better days. Its unemployment level is more than triple the national average, but it's trying to flip the switch on its economic woes and take the city to new heights. "When I came on board, we actually were going through a pretty bad cycle," said city manager Nicole Ziba. "Had an unemployment rate of 33 percent. That means 1 out of every 3 people that you would run into was out of a job and looking for one. That's a pretty dire situation economically." The town is trying to parlay its history with aviation into a bright future above the clouds. "The reason we have a shortage is that the cost of getting your pilot certificate is so high that it prices a lot of people out of that market or out of even considering that career path," said Joseph Oldham, with the San Joaquin Valley Clean Transportation Center. It starts with their best and brightest. Jefferson Elementary has a new state of the art flight simulator, courtesy of Boeing. It's part of the company’s plan to inspire a new generation of pilots. Rose, a student at the elementary school, doesn't have her sights set on staying in Reedley forever. "Paris, Rome, Washington DC and Mexico," said Rose on places she'd live. If she decides to cash in on her new found skills, she won't have to leave the city limits to train. "They teach us ground school lessons, so everything from we need to learn about the physics of flying, to learning airports, airport diagrams, and then they teach us as well in the simulator class how to actually fly the plane. That gets us ready for when we go to the actual airport and fly the real thing," said Benjamin Jones, a student in the Reedley College. Reedley College has a flight training program offering a less expensive option for prospective aviators. It's all part of the city’s bid to become a pilot pipeline. "You hear a lot of kids, 'I want to be a fireman. I want to be a policeman.' Now that this is here, now they have, 'Oh, we could fly planes? we could be pilots?'" said Muniz. But even if the students don't become pilots, just having the simulator around presents new horizons. "It doesn't just open up the possibility for this, but now it's like opening their minds to, what else? What's out there? What more can I do?," said Muniz. 2528

Boeing is facing a growing number of lawsuits after 346 people died in two crashes involving 737 MAX planes. The family of one passenger, 24-year-old Samya Stumo, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company. “The potential of my sister and 156 others driven straight into the ground because of Boeing’s greed,” said Stumo’s brother, Adnaan, in a press conference. Kevin Durkin, an attorney representing Stumo’s family, says more than 20 whistleblowers have come forward, including pilots and Boeing engineers, who raised concerns about the plane and pilot training. “I think this plane, as designed, should never fly again,” Durkin said. “I think there has to be major changes in it that ensures it's safe.” Boeing is updating its software to fix the problem detected in both of the 737 MAX plane crashes. However, it's not just victims' families suing Boeing. The company’s own shareholders just filed a lawsuit, claiming the company put its profits ahead of airplane safety and honesty. Boeing has declined to comment on any lawsuits, but this month, its CEO promised safety is a priority. “When the MAX returns to the skies with the software changes to the MCAS function, it will be among the safest airplanes to ever fly,” said Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg.The 737 MAX was once Boeing's fastest-selling plane, but the company had zero new orders in the month of March for the plane, which remain grounded worldwide. 1440
