Although a new trend online, it’s something nature lover Caitlin Deporter has already been doing for nearly a decade. The beauty of the outdoors is something Deporter has always cherished. "It's just grown from a young age, an appreciation for everything natural," Deporter says. She spends a lot of her time hiking near the Potomac River in Maryland. "My dad and I usually do our big hiking trips together," she says. Along those hikes, Deporter says she sees a lot of garbage. "There are a lot of beer cans and bottles, I will tell you that," she says. Americans produce more than 250 million tons of waste annually, according to the EPA. However, Deporter is doing one simple thing to curb those statistics. “I'll bring a normal size trash bag and a backpack and get prepared for a day of work,” she says. "I'm concentrating on getting trash where it's supposed to be," she says. She does something small to help combat a big problem. "I'm just one person; I can only do so much," she says. She’s hoping the #TrashTag movement keeps up, for the sake of the environment."I hope this whole trend really sticks, and it's not just you know people do it for a week to get all their photos in and look all cool, you know,” Deporter says. “I really hope people continue to do it." 1658

A four-day manhunt for the driver who mowed down a 9-year-old girl playing in her front yard is over.But the suspect's explanation for the hit-and-run is surprising.Gabriel Fordham turned himself in to Georgia authorities on Tuesday, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office said.Officials say he plowed his car into LaDerihanna Holmes before crashing into her home and then fleeing the scene on Friday.Dontaye Carter, a spokesman for Fordham's legal team, said Fordham was fighting off a carjacker when the crash happened."He was carjacked when stopped at a stop sign when a guy jumped in his car and pistol-whipped him, and he tried to fight him off," Carter said.At a news conference Wednesday, the DeKalb County Police Department said it couldn't confirm whether the carjacking claim was true, since the investigation is ongoing.Fordham has been charged with failure to maintain lane, failure to stop at a stop sign, reckless driving, hit and run and serious injury by vehicle.LaDerihanna was outside playing with a friend when she caught just a glimpse of a dark car speeding toward her.Surveillance footage shows the car flying over the curb and onto the girl's front lawn in Lithonia, near Atlanta. LaDerihanna starts to sprint, but she can't outrun the careening car as it crashes into her and then into her house.She suffered a fractured skull and a shattered pelvis that's broken in three places."She was lifeless. I was screaming," LaDerihanna's mother, Charlotte Bolton, told CNN.LaDerihanna was hospitalized in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable, her mother said Tuesday.Bolton said even she felt the impact of the crash from inside the house."I heard a very bad sound, and my house shook like an earthquake," the mother said. "I immediately knew something was wrong. I screamed, 'My baby!' because I knew she was on the porch."She raced to the front lawn, where "a lady had gotten my baby from between the car and my house," Bolton said. "Another gentleman started doing CPR."LaDerihanna's father scooped her up and drove her to the hospital. And if it wasn't for that, we wouldn't have anything," she said.In addition to leaving LaDerihanna critically injured, the car's impact severely damaged the home."This car is deep in my house," Bolton said. "My basement is destroyed."LaDerihanna is trying to stay positive as she recovers from her extensive injuries."She's in a lot of pain, but she's in good spirits," her mother said. WASHINGTON – When the House of Representatives begins its public impeachment hearings, it will be a rare event – only the fourth time involving a president. Presidents Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton all faced varying degrees of the impeachment process. Now, so will President Donald Trump. “It is a political event,” said Georgetown Law Professor Victoria Nourse. She says while it is a high-profile event, she cautions to not call it “political theater.” “Impeachment was the last gasp, right? If someone did something completely antithetical to the nature of the Republic, if they were essentially unfit to serve in office, the founders wanted to have a backstop remedy, other than an election,” Nourse said. Here’s how the process will unfold: 1. Several House committees will hold public hearings. It’s up to the judiciary committee to decide if the full House will vote on impeachment. 2. Democrats hold the majority in the House– there are 235 of them. At least 218 representatives need to vote for impeachment for it to move on to the Senate. 3. The Senate holds the impeachment trial and acts as a jury. 4. Republicans have the majority in that chamber— 53 seats. An impeachment conviction requires a two-thirds majority vote. For the first time in more than two decades, Virginia elected and just swore in a new state legislature controlled by Democrats. “Virginia is officially blue, congratulations,” said Gov. Ralph Northam, D-Virginia, on election night 2019. The new Democrat-controlled state legislature is vowing to pass gun control measures. That’s prompting some local governments to make their own moves by declaring themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuary” cities and counties. So far, more than 100 cities and counties in Virginia have declared themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuaries.” They’re not the only ones: from Florida to Colorado to Nevada and elsewhere, local municipalities are voting in favor of designating themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuaries.”But what does it even mean? Georgetown Law professor Mary McCord says what each declaration says varies from place to place. “Some are very much directly stating that county officials or city officials will not enforce state law that implicates or regulates, in any way, shape or form, gun ownership,” McCord said. “Others are simply espousing a support for second amendment rights.” In the end, though, she said the declarations do not hold up to legal scrutiny. “They really have no legal effect,” McCord said. “In Virginia, for example -- the Virginia Constitution and Virginia state law is very clear that it is the general assembly of the entire state -- not of any particular locality.
