(KGTV) — Researchers announced Thursday that Victoria, a Southern White Rhino from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, is pregnant. The fetus was conceived through means of artificial insemination and is being monitored by scientists to see if she can carry her calf to term over 16 to 18 months of gestation. The confirmation of this pregnancy through artificial insemination represents an historic event for our organization but also a critical step in our effort to save the Northern White Rhino," said Barbara Durrant, Director of reproductive Sciences at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research. If the pregnancy is successful, researchers hope someday she could become a surrogate mother and could give birth to the related Northern White Rhino, which is nearly extinct because of poachers.RELATED: Last Northern White Rhino dies?"We will know that they have proven themselves to be capable of carrying a fetus to term before we would risk putting a precious Northern White Rhino embryo into one of these Southern White Rhinos as a surrogate," Durant said. The ultimate goal of this type of testing is to create a herd of five to 15 Northern White Rhinos that would be transitioned to their natural habitat in Africa, which could take decades. 1282

(KGTV) -- We’ve all seen popular natural disaster movies that show the ground opening up during a large earthquake. Despite the way Hollywood depicts the destruction, the U.S. Geological Survey says the ground can’t open up during a large earthquake. In the spirit of debunking this myth, we’ve decided to take a look at some other popular earthquake myths. Check them out below: Can the ground open up during an earthquake? According to the USGS, an earthquake occurs when two blocks of the earth’s crust slide past one another after being stuck together in one place for a long time, because of friction on the fault, while the rest of the crust rest of the crust away from the edges has been slowly moving. “If a fault could open up, no earthquake would occur in the first place because there would be no friction locking the two blocks together,” the agency says. "Shallow crevasses can form during earthquake-induced landslides, lateral spreads, or from other types of ground failures, but faults do not open up during an earthquake."RELATED: Is there such a thing as earthquake weather? Will California fall into the ocean? In short, the USGS says no. California is firmly planted on the top of earth’s crust in a location where it spans two tectonic plates. The San Andreas Fault System is the boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. According to the USGS, the two plates move horizontally and, the agency says, there is nowhere for California to go. Los Angeles and San Francisco will one day be adjacent to one another, however. RELATED: Fault system in San Diego could cause big quakeCan animals predict earthquakes? This one is a bit unclear. According to the USGS, in 373 B.C. animals were observed leaving their homes and heading for safety days before a destructive earthquake. Since then, numerous anecdotal evidence exists of animals acting odd anywhere from weeks to seconds before an earthquake. Consistent and reliable behavior and the mechanism explaining how it could work still eludes scientists. Currently, scientists around the world are pursuing the mystery, according to the USGS. 2139

(KGTV) - The California Justice Department does not verify the validity of hunting licenses for people under 21 who are applying to buy firearms, instead saying that’s the responsibility of individual gun shops. That information could shed light on how Poway synagogue shooting suspect John Earnest was able to buy his gun at 19 with an invalid hunting license. Earnest picked up the AR-15 style weapon from San Diego Guns on April 26, the day before the alleged attack. His hunting license was not going to become valid until July 1, 2019, according to state Fish and Wildlife. A woman who answered the phone at San Diego Guns Friday said the store would have no comment. Earlier this week, a different employee told 10News, “We did everything properly. We did everything we needed.” Senate Bill 1100 went into effect this year, requiring anyone under 21 buying a rifle to be law enforcement, military, or have a valid, state-issued hunting license. The Justice Department, however, says gun shops must verify the hunting license before they allow the customer to fill out the state online application. That application leads to a 10-day background check that checks a variety of categories - hunting licenses not listed. "Dealers are currently responsible for determining whether an exemption would apply under Senate Bill 1100 at the point of purchase. The 10-day waiting period, among other things, is to check if an individual is prohibited by state or federal law from owning or possessing a firearm," a DOJ spokesperson said in a statement. Earnest is accused of killing Chabad of Poway worshipper Lori Kaye and injuring three others in the April 27 attack. “He was not 21, so I knew from the beginning there is something fishy here with that gun,” said Israel Dahan, whose daughter Noya was hit by shrapnel and will soon have surgery on her upper cheek. “To be honest with you, what’s the difference? This guy is a killer, it doesn’t matter if he’s going to buy it legally or illegally." Gun shops found violating the rule would have limited time to correct any violation, which could include getting the firearm back. Earnest, however, allegedly carried out the attack the day after he picked up the AR-15 style weapon. 2237
