Behind every stitch and each piece of fabric on the dolls put on display in Washington D.C., there’s a real face and a real story.Activist Marta Perez-Garcia is the creator of the display, and she hopes it will open the public’s eyes to the realities surrounding domestic violence.“I think, because I have too many people around me and I really saw it for so long, I needed to do something about it,” Perez-Garcia says.Perez-Garcia grew up in Puerto Rico and says she regularly witnessed women being abused. She says after moving to the mainland U.S., those stories didn’t stop."It's something that is in the media, that you see that is very close to home,” she says."One in 3 women are survivors of domestic violence and or sexual assault,” says Bakht Arif, who works with abuse survivors. “And that is a lot of people.Arif works with abuse survivors for a non-profit project in Washington D.C. She believes the doll display is one way to grab people's attention but says the conversation should go far beyond this.“Policy is important; legislation is important,” Arif says. “And we will be cheering and protesting for it and cheering for anyone who supports it and brings light to the issue.”The exhibit at the Franklin Reeves building in Washington D.C. was on display throughout the month of October to promote awareness.  But Perez-Garcia says the real voices for change will come from voters in November. "As society, we have to do something about this issue,” she says. “So, if it's to really take people in power to really make the right decisions against domestic violence, of course we have to do that.” 1631

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - Moments after a major with the Boynton Beach, Fla. Police Department was pulled over for speeding, he decided to return the gesture by pulling over the same officer who had just let him off with a warning.The entire exchange was caught on dash and body camera video and was released to the media after 13 months of asking for the records.According to the video, Major Michael Johnson was pulled over by Officer Mark Sohn for allegedly driving 97 mph in a 65 mph zone in Interstate 95, while off-duty in September 2017. BRIGHTON, Colo. -- Ava Breiterman is struggling with her emotions after a traumatic event over the weekend."Her whining and not waiting is a result of what happened on Saturday," said Ava's mother Kelly Breiterman.Five-year-old Ava has level 2 autism. Kelly Breiterman says her daughter has sensory issues that cause Ava to have "meltdowns".Kelly and Ava flew Southwest to Omaha from Denver nearly two weeks ago with no problems. The flight back was a different story.Breiterman says from the time she went to check her bags in the Omaha airport, all the way to when she and her daughter got on the plane, they were told Ava must keep her mask on."I was trying to get her to put her mask back on, she wouldn’t. So the manager came back in and said, 'sorry ma'am, we’re going to have to deboard you because this is a policy and she wasn’t wearing a mask,'" Breiterman said.Breiterman says Southwest employees ignored a doctor's note explaining Ava may have difficulties leaving her mask on because of her illness.Jesse Ogas at Firefly Autism says his organization actually teaches kids with autism to wear a mask. Both he and Breiterman would like to see policy changes."I’m telling you right now some kids aren’t going to wear a mask because of the sensory issues involved in that," Ogas tells Denver7.We asked Southwest Airlines if their policy should be changed, they responded saying "As of July 27, there are no exemptions to Southwest’s face covering requirement."After being kicked off the plane, Breiterman says Southwest offered a voucher for another flight and refused to grab their bags which stayed on the plane to DIA. The next day, the Breiterman's were forced to rent a car and drive 500 miles home. BONSALL, Calif. (KGTV) — The San Luis Rey Downs Country Club and Golf Course shut down after being a popular spot for many in the community for over 50 years.After four years of being a vacant property, a new project is underway to revamp the area. The Myrtle Creek Botanical Garden and Nursery has purchased the buildings that used to house the restaurant and banquet rooms. They’ll be revamping the inside and adding updates.The marketing director for Myrtle Creek, Kevin MacGregor tells 10News, “It’ll be basically what it was for the past 50 years, but with our spin on it minus the golf course of course”.RELATED: Evacuated horses begin to return home to San Luis Rey Downs after Lilac FireThe County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation tells 10News they purchased 200 acres from the golf course when it first shut down. They have plans to protect the natural habitats in the area with possibly adding some hiking trails. No revamped golf course is in any plans.Neighbors in the area are looking forward to the day the lot won’t be vacant and instead will bring them restaurants and bars right to their neighborhood.They tell 10News, over the past four years there’s been a problem with added trash and vandalism on the property. Myrtle Creek has plans to turn it into a 23-room boutique hotel.Christine Hoffman has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years, she even played on the golf course when it was open.Hoffman tells us the past four years have been sad for the neighbors nearby."To see it go in such disrepair the last few years is kind of heartbreaking," Hoffman said.Hoffman, like many other neighbors, are looking forward to the project.
