English graduate Chen Xia has never been short of admirers but the 25-year-old Nanjing native has chosen to tie the knot with a soldier who has neither a college degree nor a fat pay packet. In an era when young people are depicted as calculating and materialistic when choosing spouses, Chen is one of many who are keen on a partner in military uniform. A recent survey found that nearly two in three of 1,500 respondents would like to marry servicemen and women. Personal integrity, marital fidelity, stable jobs and increasing salaries are the top reasons given for the choice, according to the poll conducted by China Youth Daily. "The survey results are perhaps one of the best gifts for the August 1 Army Day," said a 26-year-old soldier surnamed Wu in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province. "It makes me more confident of finding a dream girl." Marrying a soldier was popular before the 1980s, which meant not only a decent job but also glory to the whole family. "Many friends envied me when I married Chen Xia's father. He was a heroic figure in our eyes," said Zhang. But as the country turned more peaceful and prosperous, soldiers now live reclusive lives in camps and campuses. It has also become difficult for them to get a spouse as they are confined to a small social circle and don't enjoy a high pay. "Frankly speaking, I hesitated while Chen Xia planned to get married; afraid that she would suffer the same loneliness and economic pressure than I used to," said Zhang. "But I guess she knows the merits of marrying an army man."

The first ever white paper on political parties pledges multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Released Thursday by the Information Office of the State Council, the white paper, entitled "China's Political Party System", explains in detail the formation, characteristics and development of the system and its role in economic and social development.Multi-party cooperation is a political system that suits China's conditions, the paper says."China will not mechanically copy other countries' political party systems," the document says, adding that the history of modern and contemporary China has proven that blind emulation of the political or party systems of other countries will not succeed.Zhuang Congsheng, director of the research office of the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the CPC, said multi-party cooperation is different from the two-party or multi-party systems in Western countries and the one-party system practised in some other countries. BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhua) -- China recorded 68.02 billion U.S. dollars in foreign trade of electronics and information products in January, a growth of 19.3 percent year-on-year.     Sources with the General Administration of Customs said on Saturday that the growth rate was 12.9 percentage points lower than the year-earlier level.     The total trade volume included 38.29 billion U.S. dollars in export value, up 22.9 percent, and 29.73 billion dollars in import value, up 15.2 percent.     The sources said the growth rate for exports was 12.8 percentage points lower than the same month of last year, while that for imports was 13 percentage points lower.     Of the total exports, wholly owned foreign companies accounted for 24.94 billion U.S. dollars, or 65.1 percent, the sources added.

China has offered Spain a pair of pandas during the ongoing visit of King Juan Carlos, as a goodwill gesture to promote ties between the two countries, the foreign ministry said Thursday. "This is a very good gift for Spain," foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said. "We hope the Spanish people will love them. As envoys of the Chinese people, we hope that the gift of the pair of pandas will increase the friendly relations between the two countries and peoples." China has a long history of giving its national animal, the endangered panda, to other nations as a gesture of goodwill. Officials at the Spanish embassy in Beijing said the pandas were not a gift, but were being loaned in an arrangement financed by a private Spanish company that runs the Madrid Zoo. National authorities Thursday urged local governments to deal more firmly with cases of illegal land acquisitions. The move comes at a time when such cases are becoming increasingly common. A joint statement released by the Ministry of Supervision (MOS) and Ministry of Land and Resources said local government leaders should take the lead in protecting arable land. "The work to crack down on illegal land acquisition cases should be put at the top of the agenda," the statement said. The fast pace of economic development and the burgeoning property market have made land deals a lucrative prospect. The soaring land prices are filling local coffers and spurring further cases of illegal land acquisition. Land and Resources Minister Xu Shaoshi said yesterday that China must do everything it can to ensure that its arable land bank remains above the 120 million hectares red line. "Like a high voltage line, it should never be touched," he said. "Anyone encroaching upon arable land illegally will be dealt with harshly." The statement ordered local leaders to "waste no time" in "firmly supporting" the work of local supervision and land and resources officials. It also asked them to "bravely" shoulder the main responsibility in "actively" addressing such problems at the local level. Local supervision and land and resources officials have been ordered to "review" the cases found before last October and to "concentrate strength" to ferret out more, it said. Evidence of concealed deals of ineffective work will trigger an accountability mechanism, under which local leaders will be held accountable for malfeasance. Local supervision and land and resources departments will file monthly reports on the issue.
