SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family wants the Governor of California to keep the man who murdered three San Diego State professors behind bars. Frederick Davidson was sent to prison in 1997 for three consecutive life sentences without parole after he gunned down his three engineering professors Chen Liang, Preston Lowry, and Constantinos Lyrintzis.The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office recently notified the victims’ families that Davidson applied for executive clemency.“Just asking for clemency?  Out of what?  On what grounds?” asked a distraught Esther Alonso, Lyrintzis’ sister-in-law.  Lyrintzis was married to her sister, Deana Alonso, and the couple had a young daughter.A District Attorney’s Office spokesman said the DA’s office already filed a letter opposing Davidson’s request.Alonso told 10News she could not believe Davidson would request clemency.  Alonso said the family agreed to not seek the death penalty in 1997 if Davidson agreed to plead guilty and go to prison for life without parole.“How can they tell them 20 years later that the deaths of their husbands and their fathers…that this guy has more rights than they do?” asked Alonso, a professor at Southwestern College. “I don’t understand a system where that is even possible.”Alonso created a Change.org petition directed at Governor Jerry Brown asking him to deny Davidson’s request.The DA’s spokesman said their office opposed more than 50 clemency requests last year and none of those requests were granted.  The spokesman added there is no deadline for Governor Brown to respond or send it to a hearing. 1627

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A European carrier is hoping to transform the way Southern California travels between major cities.FlixBus will start offering service to 10 Southern California cities, including in San Diego, beginning May 31. The service, which has operated within Europe since 2013, is hoping to carve out a presence with discounted ticket prices and some high-tech additions.For a limited time, travelers can snag fares from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for as low as on select dates throughout June, according to the service's website. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Two San Diego-area teachers are among six state finalists announced Tuesday for the 2020 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.According to the State Department of Education, the award honors teachers who "display subject mastery, appropriate use of instructional methods and strategies, lifelong learning and leadership in education outside the classroom."The PAEMST is presented by the National Science Foundation. Up to 108 teachers are recognized each year."These teachers are incredible educators, role models and mentors to all those around them, and through mastery of their craft, they inspire students to study math, technology, engineering, and science -- including computer science," State Education Secretary Tony Thurmond said. "They're bright stars and prime examples of excellence in our educational system, and we hope that all students can enroll in great STEAM and computer science programs with educators like them, to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow."Khamphet Pease, a sixth-grade teacher at Wilson Middle School in San Diego, was named a finalist in the mathematics category. An educator for 14 years, Pease teaches courses in Introduction to Coding; Gateway to Technology: Design and Modeling, Automation and Robotics; and Computer Science for Innovators and Makers. From 2014-16 she also mentored 16 high school girls from schools across the county to build a microlab experiment that was sent to the International Space Station to test zero gravity.Marlys Williamson, a fifth-grade teacher at Wolf Canyon Elementary in Chula Vista, was named a finalist in the science category. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A famous San Diego bike trail is open just in time for July 4. Wednesday, SANDAG opened a one-mile stretch of the newly-relocated and upgraded Rose Canyon Bike Path. The path is a segment of the Coastal Rail Trail that stretches along Interstate 5 from north Santa Fe Street to just north of State Route 52. SANDAG says the path will eventually connect to the future 44-mile Coastal Rail Trail, which will extend from Oceanside to Downtown San Diego. According to the agency, the Rose Canyon Bike Path is part of a Complete Corridor, running along the future Mid-Coast Trolley light rail line. 622
