SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego gym owner said he is keeping his doors open despite state restrictions on indoor operations that took effect early Wednesday morning.For Shawn Gilbert, the owner of Boulevard Fitness in University Heights, keeping his business open is a matter of survival."I took a huge financial hit in May. Money out of my pocket that's never coming back. We have bills to pay, we have rent to pay,” Gilbert told ABC 10News.Gilbert said he believes his gym can operate safely with face covering and social distancing guidelines because it is a large, open space with high ceilings. The gym also has an outdoor space that Gilbert plans to also utilize.According to Gilbert, none of his gym members or employees have tested positive for coronavirus.Gilbert told ABC 10News he’s prepared for any possible citations for staying open."We have a lawyer with six other gyms, all representing us gym owners. Police say Christiane Demeco was last seen in the area of West Point Loma Blvd. on Saturday.The department said Monday that Demeco was found safe, though it's unclear where she was located. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new California law aims to help thousands of low-income Californians gain access to fresh and healthy food.Seniors in California who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits will also be able to apply for CalFresh food benefits, formerly known as food stamps.SSI recipients are either over age 65, disabled, or blind. Up until recently, they couldn't apply for CalFresh benefits because they receive money for food in their check; however, it's just a month. "One of the challenges seniors face is the high cost of living, we can hardly make it with what we get," said Gwendolyn Joseph, a San Diegan who lives on a fixed income.Joseph just turned 76 and can finally apply for CalFresh benefits, despite receiving SSI benefits. The average CalFresh recipient receives 0 per month to purchase food."We are striving so hard in California to restore these kinds of safety net programs to our most vulnerable Californians, look around this room, these are people who've worked their entire lives, they deserve it, they've earned it, and they need our support now," said Senator Toni Atkins, who represents California Senate District 39.Feeding San Diego, in partnership with Serving Seniors, 211 San Diego, and the County of San Diego Health and Human Services, is working to spread the word and encourage SSI recipients to apply for CalFresh benefits. "The nutritional gap that we're seeing in San Diego in terms of people having calories to eat, but not having healthy and nutritious foods to eat, is a real serious and growing problem, and it impacts seniors disproportionately," said Vince Hall, CEO of Feeding San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A pair of North San Diego County residences may become the latest local site to receive a national historic place designation.The Boathouses in Encinitas will be considered at an Aug. 1 meeting by the California State Historical Resources Commission to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.On 3rd Street, the pair of boathouses, known as the S.S. Moonlight and the S.S. Encinitas, sit blocks from the water but remain very much connected to 1920s life on the water. They were always intended to be homes and not actual vessels, but also meant to replicate the appearance and scale of boats at the time.Today, the homes represent what the California agency calls "an architecturally significant example of Fantasy-themed programmatic residential architecture." In short: Residential architecture meant to resemble something other than a traditional building.The boathouses were purchased by the Encinitas Preservation Association in 2008 and are currently rented out as private homes. Once the loan is paid off though, the plan is to convert the pair of quirky dwellings into a small museum.But explorers can visit the homes anytime on 3rd St. or do so with a helping of history from the Encinitas Historical Society during guided walking tours every third Saturday between Sept. and July. 1564
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local brewery's decision to use compostable can holders is the latest example of San Diego companies deciding to go green.Pure Project Brewery made the change last month, giving its customers an easier way to take home 4-packs of beer while still being environmentally friendly."You have to make that decision; do I wanna do the right thing, or do I wanna do the cheap thing," says Pure Project Co-Founder Mat Robar. He says every decision his company makes takes the environmental impact into account."It costs us a good amount of money to brew beer with organic and local ingredients, and sometimes it takes a little longer. Ultimately it's the right thing to do," says Robar.The new can holders are made of recycled grain, leftover from the brewing process. They biodegrade in 200 days. And, if they wind up in the ocean by accident, they're safe for animals to eat.Pure is one of the hundreds of San Diego companies emphasizing the planet over profits.Right now, the San Diego Green Business Network lists more than 200 local companies as members.Experts say it can help build a brand, attract a loyal customer base, and also help make money in the long run."The efficiencies of going green has significant business implications," says Heather Honea, the Chair of the Marketing Department at SDSU's Fowler College of Business."If you're trying to build a brand that's meaningful for consumers, you have to speak to the things they care about. Your brand has to be associated with the things they care about," says Honea.In California, that includes environmental impact."If I'm deciding between product a and product b, I'm choosing the product that not only delivers a certain set of quality attributes but also is going to have the impact on my local community or local environment that I think is acceptable," she says.Honea also says that investments in green technology and business practices may cost a lot of money upfront, but they tend to pay themselves off in the long run. She says that's especially true for companies that stay one step ahead of local and state laws.At Pure, they say protecting the environment is their "North Star," a guiding principle for everything they do."It takes a little bit of effort," says Cheyna Swartz, the Tap Room Manager, "But it's definitely worth it." 2331
