The job market keeps pumping out jobs.The unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent and the economy added 157,000 jobs in July, the Labor Department said Friday.But workers' average hourly paychecks grew tepidly from the previous month and are up just 2.7 percent compared to the same time last year. With revisions, job gains have averaged 224,000 a month over the past three months.So far this year, job growth has averaged 215,000 per month, above last year's pace of 182,000, noted PNC chief economist Gus Faucher.Last month, the manufacturing sector added 37,000 jobs. Economists were watching manufacturing closely for signs of a drag from the Trump administration's escalation of trade tensions with China and allies."It appears to be that the strength of fiscal stimulus measures are outweighing any kind of effect of trade tensions," said Wright from iCIMS.The retail sector also added 7,000 jobs, despite 32,000 jobs lost in sporting goods, hobby, book, music and toy stores.Despite many businesses' trouble finding qualified workers, they are still hiring and looking outside traditional pools for talent.That's good news for workers without a high school degree and those without a college degree. The Louisville Metro police department has fired one of the police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor. A termination letter for Officer Brett Hankison released by the city’s police department today said Hankinson violated procedures by showing “extreme indifference to the value of human life." The letter also said Hankinson violated the rule against using deadly force. Taylor, who was Black, was shot eight times by officers who burst into her Louisville home using a no-knock warrant during a March 13 narcotics investigation. Two other officers remain on administrative reassignment while the shooting is investigated.Taylor, who was employed as an EMT, was inside of her home when police conducted a “no-knock raid” on her home. Thinking the police officers were intruders, Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, allegedly shot at police.Louisville Metro Police officers returned fire, striking and killing Taylor.Walker was originally arrested for firing at police, but later was released. 1024

The only thing that scares salon owner Shelly Albro more than the empty chairs inside her Portsmouth, New Hampshire barbershop is the silence that has consumed this place recently.Having lost 30 percent of her business because of COVID-19, Albro found herself in the same position as thousands of other small business owners across the country, desperate for new streams of revenue, while at the same time, having to keep her customers and staff safe.“I just knew that if I didn’t get creative we weren’t going to make any money,” she said. “Business was down.”Albro owns Gents Barbershop, which she recently opened.On a particularly depressing day during the shutdown, she had been searching through old photos when she stumbled upon an old black and white picture from the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. A few barbers stood wearing masks as they cut clients' hair, but instead of cutting hair inside a building, the barbers were standing out on the sidewalk in front of their store.She had found her solution.“When I saw this picture I was like, ‘I gotta do this outside!’ For those who are like me who are nervous to go inside,” she said.Unsure of how the idea would go over with customers, Albro first started cutting hair outside on her days off.
