LA JOLLA, Calif., (KGTV)— San Diego beaches were bare this Memorial Day Weekend, and as overcast skies and sprinkles kept people from visiting the usual destination spots. Scarves, hoodies, even fluffy parka jackets were on full display."It is really cold," one woman said. "Whoever said it never rains in Southern California, that song, that was a lie," joked another man. The unofficial first weekend of summer in San Diego was much gloomier than expected. For the Gardner family, that meant a change in plans. "We brought the wetsuits out actually, in case it turned into a beach day, but it looks like it's not," Kelsey Gardner laughed. She and her husband Andrew had their boys, Miles and A.J. fly kites instead. 10News did meet a group of men who were excited to jump into the chilly waters. "I am pursuing diving, and here I am taking my certification. I am excited!" Navy sailor Griffin Leboffe said. He and fellow active duty sailor Brian Mims were heading into the waves with their scuba diving instructor, Harvey Forbes. Forbes said days like today are perfect diving weather. "Ambient temperature is colder when you get in, and that's just the way your body works. It actually feels warmer," Forbes said. Plus, low beach attendance meant more available parking, and better concentration during their certification test. "Here, there are a lot less people, and it's more spread out, so I feel like it would be easier to get out there," Leboffe said. But as the divers were heading in, most everyone else was heading out. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Evel Knievel’s son is on a collision course with the Walt Disney Co. and Pixar over a movie daredevil character named Duke Caboom. A federal trademark infringement lawsuit filed in Las Vegas accuses the moviemaker of improperly basing the “Toy Story 4” character on Knievel. Las Vegas-based K and K Promotions accuses Disney-owned Pixar of intentionally modeling the Caboom character, voiced by Keanu Reeves in the movie, after Knievel — although Knievel’s name is never mentioned.Knievel's famous stunts in the 1960s and ‘70s included motorcycle jumps over the Caesars Palace fountain in Las Vegas and a rocket shot into Snake River Canyon in Idaho. The Walt Disney Co. says it will defend itself from what it calls Knievel's meritless claims.“Evel Knievel did not thrill millions around the world, break his bones and spill his blood just so Disney could make a bunch of money,” Kelly Knievel said in a statement announcing the lawsuit.Knievel was seriously injured many times during more than 75 motorcycle jumps. (KGTV)— A La Mesa woman, who was the victim of a recent burglary, is opening up to 10News about her frightening experience. 10News met the woman at her home, in a quiet, secluded neighborhood in La Mesa. In the last four years she and her family have lived in the house, they have always felt safe. Until last Saturday. “To see the figure of a stranger in your home is an absolute worst nightmare,” the woman said. La Mesa Police said at around 11 pm, an intruder came through the side entrance, opened her gate, and walked into the home through the sliding door. That is when the homeowner heard a thump.“I have a three-year-old son, and looked at the monitor, and made sure it wasn’t him. He was fine,”  she said.  780

LAKELAND, Fla. -- A 90-year-old Florida man who dressed in full protective gear to say goodbye to his wife, has died of COVID-19.In a Facebook post, Sam Reck's son-in-law shared the news that Sam has died.JoAnn Reck, Sam's wife of 30 years, died a few weeks earlier after battling COVID-19. She was 86 years old and Sam was 90.Sam Reck had been separated from his wife JoAnn Reck during the pandemic after the state placed a ban on visitors at nursing homes. JoAnn lived in a nursing home and suffered from dementia, and Sam lived in an apartment nearby.Family members said the couple would schedule socially-distant visits once Sam couldn't visit the home any more. LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (KABC) -- A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was killed after being hit by a vehicle on the 15 Freeway in Lake Elsinore Saturday. The officer was hit by a sedan near Nichols Road at about 4:30 p.m. and airlifted to a hospital, prompting a closure of the southbound lanes. The officer killed was identified by CHP in a social media post as Sgt. Steve Licon. "Our hearts are heavy after the immeasurable loss of a friend, father, husband, and hero," the social media post said. The southbound lanes of the freeway were fully closed from Indian Truck Trail to Nichols Road due to a police investigation, Caltrans said. One alternative route is the 91 east to the 215 south, connecting back with I-15 in Murrieta.Injuries sustained by the driver in the sedan were not immediately known. 824
