DENVER — The deaf community in Colorado has an unusual problem with marijuana. How do you sign "endocannabinoid"?In Dank's Denver dispensary, budtenders are ready to help. But for some, placing an order is more complicated.Larry Littleton is deaf and a certified interpreter, demonstrating the difficulties as he wrote out an order for the person behind the counter."I believe that it's important for a patient to be empowered and when we don't have communication access," said Littleton.Even among other deaf people, American Sign Language isn't up to speed on weed. That's where a Boulder nonprofit, ECS Therapy Center, is stepping in to help create new cannabis-related vocabulary of signs for the deaf community.Regina Nelson is bringing together interpreters and deaf professionals to compile a video glossary."If this is the best sign for marijuana," she said, showing a sign that looks like holding a joint to her mouth, "it's really not appropriate to cannabis and cannabis oil and these other things."Nelson hopes to finish the glossary next year and as it goes into informal use, she says she hopes to eventually petition the Sign Language Academy to add it to the official lexicon.  "As a social scientist, language is what normalizes things and so to help empower the deaf community to develop language around this is what will help normalize medical cannabis use," she said. The group of volunteers is touring grows and dispensaries this week to learn about the industry and hoping to make it more ADA friendly. At a recent medical marijuana conference in which Littleton spoke, he said, the need was painfully obvious."There was no interpreters offered, no real-time captions offered and no way to understand what was being presented," said Littleton. "It’s important to be able to communicate. That’s the bottom line." 1879

DENVER — Christmas gifts may not arrive in time as U.S. Postal Service offices struggle to keep up with delivery demands.James Boxrud, a USPS spokesperson based in Colorado, said they're experiencing historical mail volume.“This week is our busiest week, of our busiest month, of our busiest year ever,” Boxrud said. “We are seeing so many packages.”Millions of Americans turned to online shopping during the pandemic for everyday necessities and again for holiday shopping.“It’s like the perfect storm,” Boxrud said.USPS is overwhelmed as people experience long delays and deliveries past the promised window on priority shipping.Stephanie Turner, a teacher and business owner, said with family gatherings canceled, her package list got a little longer this year.“We would normally ship three or four boxes of gifts, and this year we are shipping five because of people we are not seeing,” Turner said. “If everybody is shipping a little bit more, it’s going to be overwhelming.”She mailed her gifts right after Thanksgiving and said they all arrived, but it’s her business she’s worried about. Turner sells custom jackets and tops on her website and Poshmark.“Right now, I have items that I mailed on Dec. 1 that still haven’t arrived, so that’s three weeks,” Turner said. “I feel really bad for my customers, but there is not much I can do.”The shipping delays tie up money — she doesn’t get paid until the package arrives. The Washington Post reported nearly 19,000 of the agency’s 644,000 workers are under quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19. They also found that mail performance plummeted and only 75% of first-class mail, like letters and bills, arrived during the promised window on the week of Dec. 5. Mail service scored 95% last year during the same time period.“We are flexing our resources,” Boxrud said.“We are borrowing people from areas of Colorado, bringing them to an area that needs some help just to try to keep up with that flow.”On Monday, USPS delivered 971,000 packages in Colorado and Wyoming, according to Boxrud.Private express carriers also stopped serving some businesses, which pushed more shipments through USPS adding to an already strained agency, the Washington Post reported.Turner is encouraging people to print out photos of gifts that haven’t arrived and wrap them up. She said she read the tip online. “Just be patient — it’s going to come,” Tuner said. Some Coloradans believe that while it’s frustrating, they understand postal workers are doing their best under the circumstances.“I feel bad for those guys,” Turner said. Many postal workers are working overtime and will work into Christmas Eve to deliver packages. Boxrud said some express mail will be delivered on Christmas Day.This story originally reported by Adi Guajardo on TheDenverChannel.com. 2814

David Ogden Stiers, known for his role as Major Charles Emerson Winchester III in the TV comedy series "M*A*S*H," died Saturday, the agency representing him said. The actor was 75.He died "peacefully at his home in Newport, Oregon after a courageous battle with bladder cancer," the MKS Talent Agency tweeted."His talent was only surpassed by his heart," the agency added.Stiers was born in Peoria, Illinois, in 1942. He was nominated for two Emmy awards for his performance as Winchester in "M*A*S*H," the popular series that ran for 11 seasons from 1972 until its high-rated finale in February 1983.The show, based on a 1970 movie, centered on Army surgeons and staffers during the Korean War. Characters such as chief surgeon Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce (Alan Alda) dished out wry humor as they dealt with the stress of wartime, battlefield injuries physical and psychological, and death. He joined the cast in 1977, filling the void left after the departure of actor Larry Linville's Frank Burns from the show but by the series' end he was as much a part of the team as the original cast.Stiers' Major Winchester was portrayed as a Boston-born blueblood, often snobbish -- but a talented doctor. The character was often the comic foil to the hijinks of Alda's "Hawkeye" and Mike Farrell's Captain B.J. Hunnicutt.Stiers had a busy post- "M*A*S*H" career with TV shows including the "North & South" miniseries and "Perry Mason" TV movies.Younger generations would recognize his voice work in several Disney movies, including the classic "Beauty and the Beast," "Pocahontas" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."Stiers was an avid fan of classical music and a gifted musician. He was a resident conductor for the Newport Symphony in Oregon and guest conducted dozens of orchestras around the country, the Newport Symphony said in a statement. "All of us at the NSO are heartbroken. David Ogden Stiers was a generous, loving, and inspirational friend and pillar to our orchestra, and, indeed, to all of us individually. Our orchestra would not be here if it weren't for his great support and inspiration over three decades," said Adam Flatt, the symphony's music director."His depth of musical feeling, love for our musicians, and charisma made his performances soar when he was on our podium. We will all work to keep David's spirit alive in all of our performances," he added.  2389
