The fog hangs heavy over Great Bay along the New Hampshire seacoast on a raw as Josh Carloni and his wife, Jessica, emerge through the mist on their fishing boat.They are the owners of Rising Tide Oyster Company, a family-owned business that typically sells thousands of oysters a year to restaurants across New England. But when the novel coronavirus hit back in March, their sales disappeared overnight as restaurants were forced to closed.“Every time you turn on the news, there’s just more bad news out there,” said Carloni. “Our business is down maybe 20 percent.”The Carlonis and oyster fisherman across the country were finding themselves in similar positions. They suddenly had thousands of perfectly healthy oysters that needed to be harvested, but there was no place for them to go.“Oyster farmers had been growing these oysters for three years, and suddenly, they didn’t have a market at all. The pandemic hit oyster farmers across the country hard,” explained Alix Laferriere, who serves as the Marine and Coastal Director for the Nature Conservancy of New Hampshire.Laferriere and her team thought there was little they could do to help struggling oyster farmers until a few months ago when an anonymous donor gifted a million donation.With that sudden infusion of cash, Laferriere and her team got to work. With help from the Pew Charitable Trust, they developed the Supporting Oyster Aquaculture and Restoration (SOAR) initiative to buy back five million oysters that needed to be harvested. The program is being deployed in seven states: Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Washington state.But it’s not just helping fisherman’s bottom line, it’s also helping estuaries and reefs at the bottom of the ocean.Turns out oysters don't just taste good; they can do good for the environment. That grant bought back 10,000 of Josh Carloni's oysters. And he isn't just throwing them into the ocean. Laferriere and her team have strategically told him where they should be deployed across the Great Bay Estuary along New Hampshire's coast. Eventually, the oysters will latch on to reefs below and help restore the damage done by decades of overharvesting, pollution and disease.“It’s this win-win opportunity where we get to put oysters back in the bay and help our local oyster farmers,” explained Briana Group, who also works with the Nature Conservancy of New Hampshire.One adult oyster can filter up to 30 gallons of water a day, and when they’re filtering that water, they’re removing nitrogen from the ecosystem.While the program is giving fisherman an infusion of cash, it’s also giving reefs and estuaries across the country an infusion of clean water, courtesy of a 3-inch mollusk.“There’s nothing bad about this situation; it’s only good,” Laferriere said as she looked out over the ocean.For fisherman like Josh Carloni, the program means he gets to keep his business afloat for another year, while at the same time, giving back to the environment. And it’s all because of COVID-19.“It makes us feel really good about doing something good for the environment,” he said. 3134
The Florida Senate on Monday passed Senate Bill 7026, The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act — a bill that raises the minimum purchasing age for a firearm to 21 and sets a program that allows for armed librarians, coaches and counselors.The bill now moves to the Florida House. It's not immediately clear when the House will take up the measure.The legislation works to address the issues presented by the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, including firearm and school safety, and community mental health resources. The deaths of 22 more children from flu-related causes were reported Friday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in its weekly surveillance report.Those deaths bring the total number of children reported to have died to 84 since October, when the current flu season began. Three out of four children who died from the flu had not gotten a flu vaccine, the acting director of the CDC said in a Thursday news conference. "We continue to recommend parents get their children vaccinated even though it's late in the season," Dr. Anne Schuchat said. The season may continue for several more weeks, she added. 633
The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a safety alert about flying with dry ice onboard, in anticipation of the huge nationwide distribution project anticipated to start in the next few days once the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is approved for use.The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines both need to be kept at extremely cold temperatures, requiring the use of dry ice during transit.Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide that is pressed into blocks or pellets. It doesn’t melt into a liquid, it moves directly from a solid to a gas and that process can happen quickly at high altitudes.That can cause problems onboard a plane, such as causing the plane to weigh less at times during the flight and change its center of gravity.“CO2 sensors installed or carried in the aircraft or worn by the pilots and other crewmembers will assist the operator and crew in recognizing hazardous concentrations of CO2 and implementing effective risk controls,” the FAA’s safety alert recommends.In addition, they encourage maximum ventilation onboard while on the ground and in the air, asking crewmembers to check air conditioning units and auxiliary power units before flight.Exposure to elevated levels of CO2 can cause drowsiness or dizziness, and higher levels can impact breathing eventually leading to hypoxia and death.The FAA also recommends that “pilot training on specific conditions and procedures can improve pilot decision-making in the event of a CO2 detector alert or other system abnormalities.”Friday morning, Health and Human Services Director Alex Azar said Americans could begin getting the COVID-19 vaccine next week once the FDA and CDC give it emergency use approval. 1676
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics released preliminary data on Monday, which shows U.S. airlines carried almost twice as many passengers in June than in May. According to the news release, BTS said data collected showed that 16.3 million passengers flew on large airlines in June, up from 8.4 million on all U.S. airlines in May.The BTS said airlines carried 80% fewer passengers in June than it did exactly one year ago.The data was by 20 airlines that carry 90% of the passengers, the agency said."June 2020 was the second consecutive month that the annual decrease in the number of U.S. airline passengers was less than annual change in the previous month," BTS reported.According to the agency, preliminary data showed a 77% decline in domestic passengers between June 2019 to June 2020 following more substantial annual reductions in May (88%) and April (96%).Preliminary data showed that international passengers on U.S. airlines declined 96% from June 2019 to June 2020, following annual decreases of 99% in April and 98% in May, the agency said.BTS says final U.S. airline traffic reports for June will be released on Sept. 11.
