BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China and Pakistan pledged to strengthen defense ties Thursday at a meeting between Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie and visiting Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani."Cooperation between the Chinese and Pakistani armed forces is exemplary and has been fruitful," Liang, also a state councilor, said during the meeting at Diaoyutai Guest House Thursday morning.Liang said the two sides should make continuous efforts to conduct their cooperation programs well.He said China would join hands with Pakistan to bring military relations to a new high.Kayani said Pakistan values its defense and security cooperation with China, noting that the two countries have cooperated fruitfully in national defense industries in recent years.He added Pakistan would further strengthen exchange and cooperation with China.Kayani also met with Chinese State Councilor and Minister for Public Security Meng Jianzhu, top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo, and Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong later Thursday.During the meeting with Meng Jianzhu, the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation in law enforcement and security.Hailing results achieved in the two fields, Meng pointed out Pakistan's active efforts in cooperating with China, including in anti-terrorism. He said he believed that the China-Pakistan cooperation in law enforcement and security would continue to develop with the joint efforts from both sides.Kayani echoed Meng saying the Pakistani government and its armed forces attached much importance to the strategic cooperation with China, and the government would further enhance it.During a meeting with Guo Boxiong, the senior officer of the People's Liberation Army of China stressed the importance of strategic communication between China and Pakistan.Guo said the all-weather friendship between the two countries has endured major international challenges. BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) - China's economy is unlikely to see a "double dip" in the second half of this year, and the economic growth for the remaining six months is expected to surpass 9 percent, according to a Bank of Communications report released Saturday.China's economic growth will slow down in the next half year, while consumer prices would fall from its peak, said the nation's fifth largest commercial bank in a report on the outlook of China's economy for the second half of 2010"For China, it is never a recession unless the economic growth drops below 7 percent," said Lian Ping, chief economist with the Shanghai-based bank.The growth is sustainable and healthy for the economy as the growth rate stays around 9 percent, he said.China's exports, a major force driving the economic growth, would continue to rebound in the second half, and the growth for the entire year would stay above 20 percent, according to the report.For the latter half of 2010 consumption is to grow by 18.5 percent from a year ago while investment growth will drop steadily to about 21 percent due to government support to the private sector and strategic emerging industries, it said.Increasing labor costs, resources and food prices is expected to push up China's consumer prices, but the growth would be restrained in the second half due to the slowing money supply and eased imported inflationary pressures, it said.China's gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 11.1 percent in the first six months of this year from one year earlier, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed.China's consumer price index stood at 2.6 percent in the first half of 2010, according to the NBS, while retail sales and fixed asset investments grew 18.2 percent and 25 percent year on year, respectively.China would maintain a stable monetary policy for the rest of the year since the global economic condition is still complicated, and an interest rate hike is unlikely to be seen, said the report.The bank estimated that new loans for the entire year would stand between 7 to 8 trillion yuan (1.03 trillion to 1.18 trillion U.S. dollars).The bank also forecasted in the report that the Chinese government would remain tough with the property sector, but there is little possibility for additional curbs on the market. Property investment would largely fall, but there will not be a significant decline in property prices.Lian suggested that the Chinese government pay attention to the possible cumulative effect of policies on the economy and keep market liquidity at a reasonable level.

CHANGSHA, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Death toll from a Friday explosion in Changsha City, capital of central China's Hunan Province, has risen to four with 19 people injured, local police said.The explosion went off on the third floor of a branch of Furong District's taxation office on Hengda Road near a downtown residential block at about 4:15 p.m., according to a statement from the city's police.Initial investigations show the explosion was a planned attack, the police said.The police sealed off the building and blocked nearby roads for investigation. All the workers in the building had already evacuated before the police came.Windows of the third floor were all shattered. Large blood stains could been seen on the stairs.The injured have been sent to the hospital.In a separate case in northeast China's Jilin Province, one people was killed and 20 were injured Friday in a series of explosions in a barber's shop in provincial capital Changchun.Four fire fighters were among the injured of the explosions which first blasted at 4:46 p.m, according to a statement from the municipal government.Witnesses say four explosions hit the shop.Fire fighters and workers from a local gas supply company are working at the site. Pieces of shattered windows can be seen forty meters away.The police are investigating the cause of the explosion.
