SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society has changed its adoption process to a socially-distant experience, allowing prospective pet owners adhering to California's stay-at-home order to adopt a new furry friend from afar.An adoption counselor will call the prospective adopter to conduct a consultation over the phone to discuss available animals and help the adopter choose the pet which best fits their lifestyle. Once the pet is adopted, the adopter can drive up to the campus and staff will help safely load the animal into the adopter's car.RELATED:Amid COVID-19 closures, some San Diegans turn to pet adoptionSan Diego area puppy stores accused of selling dogs from puppy millsHelen Woodward launches 'critter cam' amid social distancingHumane Society campuses in Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego are open by appointment only each day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Interested adopters should call the society at 619-299-7012 to make an appointment."The COVID-19 pandemic is presenting significant challenges for San Diego Humane Society's lifesaving work, but it is imperative that we continue to find homes for the animals in our care," said SDHS President and CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman. "The flow of animals into shelters will not cease due to this virus, so we are pleased to be able to continue providing adoption services in this way."San Diego Humane Society is encouraging any community member who is able to open their home and heart to a shelter pet in need. The organization currently has more than 100 pets available for adoption. 1553

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Humane Society officials reached out to the public Monday for help in finding whoever abandoned a gravely malnourished dog in Pacific Beach last week. The dog, a 3-year-old shepherd mix, was abandoned near Campland on the Bay, off Pacific Beach Drive, on or around last Monday, according to the San Diego County Humane Society. A good Samaritan found the "severely emaciated" dog Tuesday afternoon by the Kendall-Frost Mission Bay Marsh Reserve, near Pacific Beach Drive and Olney Street. The good Samaritan immediately sought veterinary care for the dog, but it was euthanized because of failing organs, according to the humane society. Veterinarians determined the dog was in such a deteriorated state that he could not have made it by himself to the location he was found -- meaning he was abandoned there."This is absolutely heartbreaking and completely unnecessary," said Humane Law Enforcement Chief Bill Ganley. "The necropsy revealed socks, a washcloth and a stuffed animal inside this dog's stomach. San Diego Humane Society is here to help, and to learn this poor dog was left to die in this state just a few miles from our doorstep is unfathomable."Anyone who needs help caring for their animal can contact the San Diego Humane Society. The nonprofit organization is an open-admission shelter, meaning it will never turn away an animal in need.Anyone who may have seen the person or persons who abandoned 3-year-old shepherd mix dog is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or the San Diego Humane Law Enforcement unit at 619-299-7012 (then press 1). Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward up to ,000. 1681

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously today to support Mayor Kevin Faulconer's plan to expand outdoor dining and retail options during the COVID-19 pandemic. The vote follows Faulconer's July 7 executive order that waived requirements for the temporary use of sidewalks and private parking lots as outdoor dining and retail venues to increase space for physical distancing.Tuesday's vote allows businesses to use adjacent on-street parking to operate while also waiving a majority of permitting fees.``Our local restaurant and retail owners have shown incredible resolve and resilience throughout this pandemic. Many of those small businesses have been among the hardest hit and San Diegans are ready to support them safely and responsibly,'' Faulconer said. ``The response we've seen to outdoor dining has been overwhelmingly positive, and this ordinance opens up so many more options for our small businesses as they work hard to rebound and recover.''The plan is expected to impact up to 4,000 restaurants in San Diego that employ more than 55,000 individuals.Previously, securing an outdoor sidewalk cafe permit could cost businesses more than ,000 and take several months to process. This ordinance will help reduce applicant costs and the review process.``Small businesses account for 98% of San Diego companies. Needless to say, the impact COVID-19 is having on our small, independent, and family-owned businesses is monumental,'' City Councilman Chris Cate said. ``Outdoor dining gives businesses a fighting chance to make it another day, and I applaud Mayor Faulconer for his innovative efforts.''The ordinance also allocates 0,000 in further assistance by absorbing permitting costs for the first 500 businesses that apply with remaining applicants paying significantly reduced fees. Part of the funding is specifically for outreach and education on the program for small and disadvantaged businesses. The city will enter into an agreement with the Strategic Alliance of San Diego Ethnic Chambers of Commerce -- comprised of the Asian BusinessAssociation of San Diego, the Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce, and the San Diego County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce -- to provide informational materials in multiple languages and target hard-to-reach communities and disadvantaged businesses.``Working together to support communities of color that have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 will help restaurants in these communities recover and continue to contribute to this vibrant economic and cultural landscape in San Diego,'' said Donna DeBerry, spokeswoman for the Strategic Alliance of Ethnic Chambers of Commerce.Upon implementation, the mayor's ordinance will:-- allow outdoor business operations for dining and retail in parking lots, on-street parking spaces, and sidewalks as well as neighboring business frontage with written permission of neighboring business owners;-- waive special event permit fees to allow nonprofit applicants to close streets and conduct business outdoors faster and cheaper;-- broaden allowances and reduce required permits for temporary signs;-- allow for expanded wholesale distribution of food, beverages, and groceries directly to consumers while allowing for social distancing;-- preserve mobility, safety and emergency access for pedestrians, and preserve requirements that ADA access and path of travel be maintained at all times;-- require full compliance with all state and county health orders and guidance. 3516

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SDCCU Stadium in Mission Valley was added to the 30th annual list of the top 10 endangered landmarks and cultural landscapes in San Diego released Tuesday by the Save Our Heritage Organisation.SOHO called the facility -- known until recently as Qualcomm Stadium -- "one of the few mid-century designed, multi-purpose stadiums" to remain standing in the United States."Innovative design features include the pre-cast concrete, pre-wired light towers and spiral concrete pedestrian ramps," according to SOHO. "The novel form of the stadium -- eight concentric circles -- provides excellent sight lines."While current proposals for the site include knocking the stadium down, SOHO urged city leaders to adapt the structure for future uses like college football or soccer games.SOHO, which advocates for maintaining San Diego's historical buildings and sites, as well as unique architectural styles, also criticized the city for continuing to ignore Presidio Park, which it described as "a decaying and unkempt embarrassment," and Balboa Park, where many of the major buildings are behind in their maintenance needs.Others on the list are: 1166
