 SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Twelve members of San Diego's California Conservation Corps returned home today, after a one-month deployment. On October 10th, 2018, Category 4 Hurricane Michael approached the Florida Panhandle. 155 mile-per-hour winds wiped out Mexico Beach City, Florida. For the last month, Corps members were assisting residents recover from the disaster."We did a lot of damage assessment analysis, temporary roofing, we did debris removal, tree removal," Corpsman Antonio Sanchez said. The CCC is a state agency that offers young adults environment-related jobs. Most of the work is in California, but they can be deployed elsewhere. This was crew leader Rebecca Voorhees' first time out of state."It was very eye-opening because we've seen fires. But not things like this," Voorhees said. "It makes you a little more humble because it's not just you here we're helping. We can help all over the world."But their hearts are always at home, especially on Thanksgiving. "I'm really glad to be home. 30 days is a really long time away from family, and so I'm going to go home and spend some time with them," Sanchez said. Their Thanksgiving vacation lasts only a few days. When they go back into the office on Monday, they will be put back on the "available for deployment" list. Their next stop could be to Northern California's fire-affected areas, where they go back to doing what they do best."We help people," Voorhees said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Poway rabbi who survived a gunman's rampage on his synagogue over a year ago is facing probation after pleading guilty to federal charges of tax fraud and wire fraud, the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Diego said in a press conference Tuesday.Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein pleaded guilty to participating in a 90-10 "tax deduction conspiracy" in which Goldstein collected large donations to Chabad of Poway, but then secretly returned 90 percent of the contribution back to the individual along with a receipt."The donors then illegally claimed huge tax deductions for these fake donations, and Rabbi Goldstein kept for himself 10 percent of the donations which over the course of this fraud totaled more than 0,000," said United States Attorney Robert S. Brewer."Sadly, the facts of this case show a willful effort to deceive on the part of a trusted community leader," said Brewer.RELATED: Suspect in California synagogue shooting charged with more than 100 hate crime-related violationsThe U.S. Attorney said his office began investigating Goldstein in November 2016. The rabbi learned about the investigation in 2018 after federal agents served search warrants at his home and office.Brewer said Goldstein submitted fraudulent invoices to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other entities in order to obtain grant funding. The rabbi created fake invoices using a fictitious construction company to receive money for property damage repairs caused by the 2007 San Diego wildfires. Goldstein obtained grants to make improvements or repairs to Chabad, but he instead pocketed the money, according to the criminal complaint.Goldstein, 58, fell into the national spotlight in April 2019 after a gunman armed with an AR-15 style weapon opened fire inside the Chabad of Poway during the final day of Passover. The shooting left one person dead and three others injured, including a young girl.Federal officials have charged suspected gunman John Earnest with 109 total hate crime-related violations. Under the federal charges, Earnest faces a possible death sentence.Goldstein was shot in both index fingers and lost one of his index fingers as a result. The rabbi was invited to the National Prayer Breakfast at the White House days after the incident.In response to the charges, the Chabad of Poway said it removed Goldstein from his duties and terminated its relationship with him."Upon learning of these allegations some months ago, we launched an internal review, following which the rabbi was removed from all of his duties at Chabad of Poway, his relationship with the organization terminated, and he was dismissed by Chabad-Lubavitch Headquarters as a representative of the movement," the Chabad of Poway said in a statement."We hope and pray that Rabbi Goldstein finds the professional help that he needs and makes amends to our country and to the people he has hurt. (CNN) - A Japanese man died on board a flight from Mexico City to Tokyo with 246 packets of cocaine in his stomach.Identified only as Udo N., the 42-year-old passenger flew from Bogota, Colombia, to the Mexican capital, where he transferred to a flight to Narita airport, Tokyo, according to a statement from the prosecutor's office for the Mexican state of Sonora."Crew noticed a person suffering convulsions and requested to make an emergency landing in Hermosillo, Sonora," reads the statement.At 2.25 a.m. local time (5.25 a.m. ET) on May 24, paramedics boarded the plane and found the passenger had died.An autopsy revealed that Udo N. died from a cerebral edema caused by an overdose, according to the statement.There were 246 plastic packets of cocaine in his stomach and intestines, measuring 1 by 2.5 centimeters each.After his body was removed from the plane the flight continued its journey to Japan with 198 passengers on board.Swallowing packets of drugs is a common way that smugglers try to move illicit substances from country to country.In September 2016 a 48-year-old Australian man was caught with 1.1 kilograms (2.4 pounds) of cocaine in his stomach at Sydney Airport, Australia.The man, who lives in Thailand, had passed a baggage examination when he told police he had ingested a large number of packets filled with cocaine. 1354
