SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The military poured .1 billion into San Diego's economy, according to the Military Economic Impact Study released Thursday.The figure higher than expected, according to Executive Director of SDMAC Mark Balmert, due to more ships stopping in San Diego and more sailors and Marines coming to the region.The author of the report, Dr. Lynn Reaser, said these numbers back the idea the military is a mega-industry. She noted San Diego is home to one in every six of the nation's sailors.The study's results were announced across the bay from Naval Air Station North Island, at the Harbor Drive Annex. Mayor Kevin Faulconer was among the speakers and drove home the message: Don't take our military for granted."Those dollars are really going to help every portion of our city," Faulconer said.The focus of this year's study surrounded NAVWAR, Naval Information Warfare Systems Command. The Navy communications headquarters used to be known as SPAWAR. "The new plan is to develop those 70 acres into a technology hub with the NAVWAR headquarters at its center and that will change the Midway District. It will be wonderful for San Diego and it's wonderful for the Navy," Balmert said. "What that's going to mean for our national security for our entire country but also to connect the airport to the trolley," Faulconer added. NAVWAR produced billion in gross regional product and houses 26,000 jobs, according to Balmert, who described the jobs as, "among the better jobs in our community they're high tech jobs, high paying jobs."The study states more than four-fifths of the workforce hold at least a four-year college degree. About two-fifths hold a Master's or Doctorate degree.Reaser said those jobs are secure and will grow, "two-thirds of NAVWAR's employees work in cyber security which is a major emerging cluster in the overall county."Balmert said the future looks brights for San Diego's military growth. He said in the next five years we will double the amount of submarines at Point Loma and add another aircraft carrier to our home port. Then, as he understood the context, his frustration disintegrated, concerned more with the fact Heitmann never got help. "I feel for the family in that case. He, you know, nobody should have to go through that."That, referring to the loss of someone integrated into the fabric of your daily life, "I would always try to go and make a phone call to mom about how my day went, which is what I would do when I was away at training for the Air Force. I would call my family and let them know how my day is going, and that took a while to learn I can't do that anymore," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Grinch is back yet again to steal Christmas from San Diego.The Old Globe Theatre's production of "Dr. Suess's How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" returns to San Diego for its run from Nov. 4 to Dec. 24. Back for its 20th year, the holiday classic brings Whoville to the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in Balboa Park. The Grinch, played by Edward Watts, will embark on a quest to stop Christmas from gracing the town of Whoville, featuring the songs "This Time of Year," "Santa for a Day," and "Fah Who Doraze."RELATED: Holiday family fun around San Diego this seasonBut the action isn't just on the stage.On Sunday, Nov. 12, the show will kick off with the 12th annual tree lighting outside the Globe with a special performance by the cast for free. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Laurel Street Bridge at Balboa Park was closed late Friday after a fire started inside the bridge. At around 7:30 p.m., Park Rangers called the San Diego Fire Department after seeing smoke coming out of the side of the 105-year-old bridge. The closure caused great inconvenience for Old Globe Theater patrons trying to get to and out of Friday night's show. Season ticket holders Kenny Ard and Brian Moore barely made it to the theater, before the bridge was closed off by emergency responders. Witnesses saw firefighters carefully try to suppress the flames by opening the manholes on the road.“We kind of rushed when we saw the fire truck," Moore said. “I was like, I bet they’re going to close the bridge. So we hurried and made sure we got here.“San Diego Fire Fighters said the fire broke out inside of the hollow bridge. They have not announced the cause of the flames. However, this scene was all too familiar. Since its construction in 1914, the Laurel Street Bridge has caught fire several times. Many of the fires were started by transients who end up living inside the bridge. In 2017, several homeless people were rescued from inside a utility hole on the bridge.“There are access panels at the base and some on the sides, and so people get in there,” Moore said. While Are and Moore were able to avoid the jam getting to the show, they were not so lucky finding their way home.“My car is parked right on the other side of the bridge,” And said. “We’re going to have to take a Lyft because it’s a long way around.”The bridge had reopened by Saturday morning. 1601

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The 92-year-old San Diego man who pleaded guilty to shooting his son in the head as he slept in his father’s Old Town residence was sentenced to three years of probation. Richard Landis Peck pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter early in 2019. Peck had been facing a murder charge in the death of his 51-year-old son Robert. Peck was arrested in mid November of 2018 after going to a neighbor’s house on the 2300 block of Juan Street to tell her he just shot his son. Peck’s attorney claimed in hearings that his client’s son was an alcoholic who was psychologically abusive toward his father. The elder Peck was described in letters to the court as a kind man and a “quiet gardener” who had never been in trouble with the law. City News Service contributed to this report. 936
