SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's cost of living runs more than ,500 a month, making it one of the worst monthly hits in the country's biggest cities, according to a new study.San Diego's cost of living ranked 64th out of the study's 75 most populous U.S. cities, according to Move.org. Average monthly costs in America's Finest City came in at about ,665, the study revealed.In San Diego, prices were broken down by rent for a one-bedroom apartment, utilities, internet, gasoline, and groceries for one month:Rent: ,970.93Utilities: 1.66Internet: .05Gasoline: 6.15Groceries: 2.07Prices were pulled from Numbeo's updated estimates in June 2019.Charting as the absolute worst cities for cost of living where San Francisco (,210.60 a month), New York City (,956.11 a month), and San Jose, Calif. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego ranks as a top contender for STEM jobs in the country and to show off our local talent, the first San Diego Tech Women's Summit kicks off Saturday. The conference held at Qualcomm brings in hundreds of engineers, researchers, scientists and every woman in between. Behind it all, there's CEO of Athena Holly Smithson, video game coder Jillian Moore, and senior program manager at Intuit KImbra Brookstein. The summit creates a space where women can share stories and learn new skills to skyrocket their careers in STEM. "So our goal is to expose them at an earlier age expose them to that community so people can really see the awesome work you can do."With more than 75 percent of STEM jobs held by men, they're all facing a similar battle. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego will continue using part of the second floor of Golden Hall as a temporary bridge shelter, and add a fourth location on the other side of downtown.The City Council voted Tuesday to fund its three current shelters for the next year, and seek an operator for a new one at 17th and Imperial. A recent point in time count found more than 5,000 homeless people in the city - about half of whom are unsheltered. The temporary bridge shelters in total have about 665 beds. The shelters provide services to help residents find work and ultimately transition to permanent housing. The San Diego Housing Commission reports that since the shelters opened around December 2017, about 540 previously homeless people - or 39 percent - have transitioned to permanent or other long-term housing after a month-long stay. That shows improvement from a March 2018 update, when that number was about 14 percent. "We're making headway big time," said Bob McElroy, who heads Alpha Project - which operates a downtown shelter. "Some of our folks have been out here 20-plus years, and you're not going to get your proverbial you-know-what together in three months."McElroy said longer-term financial commitments have helped attract more qualified staffing, and noted that Alpha Project recently opened a 52-unit complex that brought more housing opportunities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Unified School District's Board of Education approved million in safety upgrades this week.The upgrades will be expedited for installation as well, and include things like security cameras, fencing, locks and gates, and notification systems."We proposed several significant changes that were adopted by the Board of Education at its meeting this week. These changes include fast-tracking several security upgrades at school sites. They also include a move to an 'options-based' model of handling actual threats," a letter to parents from Superintendent Cindy Marten said.RELATED: DA: Nine minors charged in recent threats to local schools"We were impressed this week with the determination our students showed in refusing to allow mass school violence to become accepted as the 'new normal.' We share their determination and we are inspired by their example," Marten added.A date was not given as to when the improvements would be issued.Since the Parkland, Fla., school shooting in February, there have been at least 19 cases of school threats in San Diego County. So far, nine juveniles have been criminally charged in the cases.Marten said in the letter that parents have been reaching out since the Florida tragedy to offer suggestions to safety procedures at the district's schools.The district also focuses on improving school climates for students venerable from becoming disconnected from their peers, according to Marten.
