CHICAGO — A statue of Christopher Columbus in downtown Chicago's Grant Park was taken down early Friday, a week after protesters trying to topple the monument to the Italian explorer clashed with police.Crews covered the statue, secured it with straps and used a large crane to remove the statue from its pedestal as a small crowd gathered to watch.Several work trucks were seen in the area, but it was unclear where the statue would be taken.The Associated Press sent an email Friday seeking comment from Mayor Lori Lightfoot's office.Last Friday, 18 police officers were injured when protesters tried to topple the statue. According to CNN, protesters used fireworks, frozen bottles and rocks as projectiles. CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Cal Fire responded Saturday afternoon to a large fire burning near the border in Campo. According to the agency, the fire is raging near Forest Gate Road and Border Road.Although Southern California Air Operations tweeted around 11:45 a.m. that the fire "is now well established on the U.S. side," Cal Fire says the blaze never reached the U.S. Air Operations said it sent several aircraft to the fire, including two tankers and two helicopters, but around 1 p.m., all aircraft were released from the fire. The agency said the fire is burning in light flashy fuels with a rapid rate of spread. The blaze is estimated at 50 to 100 acres currently, Cal Fire reported. (AP) — SpaceX's sleek, new crew capsule arrived at the International Space Station on Sunday, acing its second milestone in just over a day.No one was aboard the Dragon capsule launched Saturday on its first test flight, only an instrumented dummy. But that quickly changed once the hatch swung open and the space station astronauts floated inside."A new generation of space flight starts now with the arrival of @SpaceX's Crew Dragon to the @Space_Station," NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted. "Congratulations to all for this historic achievement getting us closer to flying American Astronauts on American rockets."This beefed-up, redesigned Dragon is the first American-made, designed-for-crew spacecraft to pull up to the station in eight years. The next one coming up will have its own two-man crew.The space station's three astronauts had front-row seats as the white 27-foot-long (8-meter-long) capsule neatly docked, a little early no less. TV cameras on Dragon as well as the station provided stunning views of one another throughout the rendezvous.Just two hours after the Dragon's grand entrance, the station crew entered to take air samples. The astronauts wore oxygen masks and hoods until getting the all-clear.If the six-day demo goes well, SpaceX could launch two astronauts this summer under NASA's commercial crew program. Both astronauts — Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken — were at SpaceX Mission Control in Southern California, observing all the action. They rushed there from Florida after watching the Dragon rocket into orbit early Saturday from NASA's Kennedy Space Center."Just super excited to see it," Behnken said minutes after the link-up. They burst into applause again, several minutes later, when the Dragon's latches were tightly secured.The capsule's lone passenger for launch — a mannequin wearing a white SpaceX spacesuit — remained strapped into its seat as the station's U.S., Canadian and Russian crew removed supplies and photographed the spotless white interior. Cancer treatments can take a toll on the mind and body, leaving many patients feeling alone and isolated.Now, senior citizens fighting cancer, like Mary Hill, are able to escape their hospital rooms through virtual reality.By putting on a pair of goggles, Hill now spends her chemo appointments on stage at Red Rocks Amphitheater as an orchestra plays classical music all around her virtually, while in reality, she receives cancer treatments. “Wherever it is that they want to be that’s not a hospital room, we give them the opportunity to go there,” said Kyle Rand with Rendever, a company designed to reduce social isolation through shared experiences in virtual reality.Rendever is operating in more than 200 locations across the U.S. and Canada, serving seniors by offering them hundreds of virtual experiences to choose from.“The magical part about this is that they get to move from the hospital room that they’re in to all of a sudden being at the Red Rocks, or being standing on the Eiffel tower, or being in Brazil,” Rand said.Medical experts say this kind of distraction therapy is very helpful, especially during the COVID-19 crisis.“In the middle of this pandemic, a place that we’re not able to go to right now and enjoy and everyone loves Red Rocks,” said Nikki Caputo with UCHealth.She says adding VR for patients is somewhat challenging for an already busy staff, but that the benefits are well worth it.“From a mind, body and soul perspective, being able to put on a headset and take your mind to a completely different place, it's quite something,” she said.It's something patients like Hill say helps them escape during this pandemic and ultimately overcome depression and isolation.“With COVID, I don’t go anywhere,” she said. “I’m safe and secure and there’s an outside world that I can think about instead of myself.” 1848

"Who can shout the loudest," was what Carlsbad?Mayor Matt Hall said happened at City Council meetings. "That's not what's best for government, you try to engage as many people as possible," saying the silent majority often went unheard."Their vote goes straight into the elected official's ear, and then the elected official is held accountable because they know how their constituents are voting," COO of Voterfied Lee Ann Allman said.The tool was created when Michael Allman ran for Congress. He wanted a way to easily plug in and crowd source, to discover the needs of the people.Voterfied reached out to Hall first and he held onto the experiment with both hands, "everybody has this equal opportunity, they can hear my voice and I can hear their voice." Lee Ann Allman said there is also an educational component to the tool, "there are links to articles so if a voter wants to find out more about something they can click on the link,"The tool is hack proof and compares information you input to the voter registry, focusing the questions they push out on specific residents.In the six or more months Hall's been testing Voterfied, Carlsbad is already seeing an impact. "Instead of having a community center, the public thought more about having a dog park," Hall said.Carlsbad's next big change?
