At least one airline is starting to pull back on their cleaning regimen. Southwest crews are limiting their between-flight cleanings and leaving most of the passenger areas for the overnight cleaning crew, according to reports.Following the coronavirus outbreak in March and subsequent travel bans, airlines touted their stepped-up cleaning protocols as passengers returned.Starting in August, Southwest is focusing on lavatories and tray tables between flights, leaving seat belts, arm rests and other areas for the overnight cleaning crew, Southwest representative Ro Hawthorne told the Dallas Morning News."Since flight schedules have increased, other areas of the aircraft will be disinfected during our overnight cleaning process, when Southwest Teams spend six to seven hours per aircraft cleaning all interior surfaces," Hawthorne said in a statement.“As always, Southwest will monitor customer and employee feedback as we adapt to the new normal in air travel, while ensuring we keep safety as our top priority,” the statement continued.In March, Southwest announced their cleaning program included "interior windows and shades, every seat belt buckle, passenger service units (including the touch buttons that control reading lights and vents that direct personal air), as well as seat surfaces, tray tables, armrests, etc."The change to cleaning protocol will reduce the time an aircraft spends on the ground between flights, the airline told flight attendants in a memo obtained by CNN. 1505

As school districts across the country prepare to return to school, small businesses that rely on child visitors are closely watching."We're probably at about 15-20% of the business that we normally do. It has been a real gut-wrenching, heart-wrenching moment," said Susan Shaw, owner of The Art Barn in Georgia.When the pandemic hit in March, she thought her business would only be on a month hiatus. Shaw, who goes by Farmer Sue, quickly realized that wasn't the case."By the end of the month I realized we are not going to be back to normal. The schools, our entire spring was lost and 95% of our summer is lost and 100% of our fall is lost because no one is going to be coming out on field trips," said Shaw.The Art Barn provides art and agriculture entertainment for children throughout the year. Shaw hosts birthday parties, school field trips and even teaches at private schools in the afternoon. They, like Benton Family Farms in Kentucky, rely almost entirely on birthday parties, field trips and summer camps to keep their businesses running.Benton Family Farms says their camps ended up getting canceled."Nothing. Five weeks of camp, every weekend of birthday parties, all of our mobile trailers going out. Our mobile trailer was going out to day care centers, churches and libraries," said owner Mary Marcum.Marcum says every single scheduled event they had was canceled. Marcum has been running educational programs on the farm her parents owned for 72 years."For eight weeks now I thought, gosh what can we do? Because my husband does most of the books and he’s said, 'You're in trouble. You’ve got to do something.' And I had done goat yoga about three years ago, but I didn’t have the time," said Marcum.Marcum ended up turning to that one program she felt could hold up during the pandemic: goat yoga."Goat yoga! People were like, it's almost outdoors, it just has a cover over it. It was an open barn and they started coming!" said Marcum.The twice weekend sessions are helping Benton Family Farms pay for some of the feed for their animals. Marcum is now taking donations, holding auctions online and creating any limited outdoor programming she can to try and stay open. So far, only about 180 people are coming out to visit the farm a month. Compare that to their normal of 4,000 people a month. "You're talking about a parent and a child. At 4,000 that’s ,000. I can do all the little things I want but there’s a lot that’s just too much to make up," said Marcum."There were a lot of tears, more prayers and then more tears and then it was finally in mid-June I was able to grab my bootstraps and say, ‘No, you made this business from absolutely nothing, a crazy idea no one thought would work. Girl get your gumption and get going,'" said Shaw.The Art Barn is also trying to be creative with programming to bring people back to her farm during the pandemic. Shaw is creating educational videos of her programs that can be used as a virtual field trip for school districts across the country."There literally will be a field trip online and we’ve broken them into the five stations so the school can purchase, rent those videos and go online," said Shaw.Small businesses like The Art Barn and Benton Family Farms are desperately hoping that schools will allow field trips again soon. ASHLAND, Ore. -- In the Rogue Valley of southern Oregon, you’ll find rows upon rows of vineyards. Rob Folin is the winemaker at Belle Fiore in Ashland.Although the grapes are different, the dry climate is similar to Napa Valley, making it very ideal conditions for wine-making. However, just like other crops, the weather can have a huge impact on wine grapes. As a winemaker, Folin says he needs to know what his vineyards are facing and how to handle what Mother Nature throws at him.“Rain, snow, frost, smoke, fire, we’ve got it all,” Folin said.In the summertime, it can be clear one day and smoky the next.“Right during harvest or right before is when it’s the worst time to have smoke – which would be right now,” Folin said.Harvest season in southern Oregon typically starts in mid-September and goes until mid-October. Folin says one of the stressors for a winemaker is smoke taint. That’s when smoke gets trapped in the skin of the grapes giving them a campfire aroma and ashy texture. It’s a flavor very few people enjoy.“If your vineyard had a fire right next to it and you just had solid smoke coming in there, then you can really have this barbecue or campfire kind of aroma,” Folin said.Unless you send your grapes in somewhere to get tested, Folin says there’s no way to know your grapes have smoke taint until they go through fermentation. He says whether a grape is impacted or not depends on a lot of factors, and it’s very unpredictable.“Our vineyard here could be totally fine, and the one across the street, their resulting wines could be smoky, like it’s just how the wind goes, the intensity of the smoke, how long it was there, how close it was, did it settle overnight.”When it comes down to it, there’s only so much you can control. As of right now, not much can be done to prevent smoke taint, and smoky summers in the western U.S. seems to be the norm lately.Folin says winemakers that face a lot of smoke taint can make more white wines since white wines are fermented without the grape skin. Or they can market their wines to consumers as a smoky wine for those that like the taste. At the end of the day, Folin says winemakers have to go with the flow.“Just roll with it," Folin said. "Ya know, fix what you can. If you can’t do anything about it, what can you do? Do what you can do and move forward.”With the exception of one fire near the vineyard in the past month, Folin says it’s been a very great year for his vineyard. He’s hopeful something good can come out of 2020 after all.“With all the stuff that’s going on, maybe we’ll have the best grapes this year. I don’t know. Just going to count on that.” 2649

  

As September is NICU Awareness Month, parents of NICU babies are working to serve as a voice for families who are trying to navigate the overwhelming and often terrifying experience of watching your baby in a neonatal intensive care unit, especially during a pandemic.When Andi Petito was 21 weeks pregnant, she went in for a simple and common anatomy scan of her baby.“When she got really quiet and excused herself,” Petito said about a routine appointment. The technician who performed the ultrasound returned with the doctor who said there were some major problems, Petito was sent to the hospital where she would remain on bed rest until she went into labor. Petito gave birth to River at 24 weeks, weighing 1 pound, 7 ounces. River was transferred to the NICU.“They warn you it's a roller coaster and they try to prepare you but you’re not really prepared for the ups and downs,” Petito said.That roller coaster is how they describe the NICU.“Terrifying, stressful and, I mean, we lived on edge,” Petito said. “You almost feel paranoid because you’re so worried about her compromised immune system, comprised lungs. Kind of like we’re all living now, but no one else is joining you in it.”Neonatologist Dr. Melinda Elliott said no one expects, prepares or plans for a NICU stay.“Nobody plans to meet me, nobody plans to meet the doctor who specializes in sick babies,” Elliott said.She said parents should not focus on all of the machines and equipment that surround your newborn.“The best thing you can do is turn the other way and focus on your baby,” Elliott said. “Just look at your baby because that baby is your baby no matter how small or how sick. You’re the only parent that baby has.”Elliott said the pandemic has stripped the visitor policy. Usually, there's only one parent allowed in at a time. While that's hard for already stressed families to manage, she reminds parents to focus on the importance of nutrition and to continue to advocate for your baby.“Probably the biggest piece of advice is just ask questions, keep asking,” Elliott said. “If you don’t get an answer you like, ask again and find somebody else to ask. You deserve to understand what’s going on with your baby:”Now, after 129 days in the NICU, that once tiny little baby is 3 years old, and likes to discuss her favorite color, pink, and all things Paw Patrol. Petito said she got through the NICU by doing her own research, being her own advocate, fighting for what her baby needs and by being honest with herself.“It’s OK to fall apart sometimes,” Petito said. “Parenthood is not what you envision when your child is not able to come home with you and everything has been blown up and so it’s okay if you need to cry and fall apart and pick yourself back up and go to the NICU.”The Petitos have now given River a sibling. Authorities will begin distributing an experimental Ebola vaccine in Mbandaka, a major city in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on Monday to try to stop the spread of the deadly virus.Healthcare workers in Mbandaka, the capital of Equateur Province and home to 1.2 million people, will be the first to receive the vaccine, World Health Organization spokesman Tarik Ja?arevi? said.The confirmation of the first case in Mbandaka last week has raised concerns that the virus could spread faster than expected.
