SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Marine Corps Air Station Miramar broke ground Friday on its first hangar to house the F-35, the most advanced fighter jet in the world.While the plane may be controversial, the hope is to replace aging aircraft. The new project will also include a flightline expansion."We're building new F-35 joint strike fighters and we're going to send them right here to Miramar,” President Trump said in his visit to the base Tuesday.Congressman Scott Peters and other military leaders were in attendance at the groundbreaking, thrilled about finally moving these projects forward."We're really taking care of the nation's defense," said Rep. Peters, representing the 52nd District. "One of the things when I went to the Armed Services Committee was to make sure that this facility was high on the list of priorities," he said. Harper Construction won the bid and will employ about 2000 workers.  The 160,000 square foot hangar is designed to hold up to 12 F-35s."We need to upgrade the infrastructure, the connections, the systems inside the hangers," said Col. Jason Woodworth, the Commanding Officer at MCAS Miramar.While critics have pointed to design flaws and skyrocketing costs on the new planes, the military says aging aircraft like the F/A-18 hornets are becoming tougher to maintain."Older airplanes are like that telephone on your wall you had when you were a kid with the rotary dial on it," Woodworth said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Like most people who’ve worked decades towards retirement, Danielle Schulte has some ideas on how she’ll spend it."Initially I’m going to sleep in late, read the newspaper, yes, I still read paper!”Schulte is an Employee Relation Specialist for UC San Diego and hopes to retire in about six years.While she's been saving since graduating college, Schulte wishes she'd saved more, especially watching the market plunge in recent days.“Because I am getting close to retirement, I don’t have as much comfort in giving it time to even out,” said Schulte.She hired a financial advisor 13 years ago and continues to fine-tune her plan, currently looking into annuities."He has been really good in helping me not to panic, helping me invest my money in stable securities as best you can, given the market," said Schulte.Dennis Brewster is a financial advisor for SagePoint Financial. He too says it's not the time to panic.“Right now we’re down about 10 percent, that’s normal, it’s just that we haven’t had anything for so long, I think that's what makes it a little tougher, we haven’t had any declines," said Brewster. You're used to a little something back from the government every year in the form of a refund, but suddenly you find yourself with a hefty bill. And the feds don't look kindly on late payments."I always tell people: if you owe money, the first step is don't panic," says Ariel Jurow-Kleiman an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of San Diego. Jurow-Kleiman should know. She's helped people in this situation many times before as a tax attorney and now teaches tax law at USD. Here's the problem."The Federal tax laws were changed in a way that will dramatically affect California residents," explains Professor Kleiman.And that's probably what hit you, too. Many itemized deductions you used to get were either tossed out or capped. "It used to be you could deduct all of your state income taxes," adds Jurow-Kleiman.Now those California income taxes are capped at ,000. And your house, the interest on the mortgage was capped too - double whammy. So, if you owe, here's the first step: do not put off filing. "Absolutely, it is so important to file your taxes on time even if you think you're going to owe," says Professor Kleiman, emphasizing the point.
