FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Florida is bracing for more impacts from Tropical Storm Eta, which has already brought heavy rains and flooded city streets in the state.Officials shut down public transportation and ordered some evacuations Sunday.Even if the storm doesn’t strengthen into a hurricane, its slow speed and heavy rains posed an enormous threat to an area already drenched from more than 14 inches of rain last month. Eta could dump an additional 6 to 12 inches. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in a morning update that life-threatening flash flooding will be possible across inundated urban areas of southeast Florida on Monday.NHC Director Ken Graham provided a briefing on Tropical Storm #Eta shortly after the release of the 7 am EST intermediate advisory.Watch on Facebook here: https://t.co/sOzOFRHpgP pic.twitter.com/S01xl343Mf— National Hurricane Center (@NHC_Atlantic) November 9, 2020 The NHC says radar estimates show over a foot of rain has fallen over the past two days in some areas of South Florida.“Flash and urban flooding will also be possible for Cuba, Jamaica, the Bahamas and the remainder of southern Florida, along with potential minor river flooding in central Florida,” the NHC said. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph Sunday night and made landfall on Lower Matecumbe Key around 11 p.m. The NHC says Eta could approach Florida’s Gulf Coast later this week as a tropical storm and possibly bring impacts from rain, wind and storm surge. The system has already left scores dead and over 100 missing in Mexico and Central America.Watch NHC Director Ken Graham discuss the latest on Eta Monday morning: 1656
Food can be expensive and each year on average an American family wastes more than ,000 on food that went bad. Making food last goes beyond Ziploc baggies and vacuum sealing. Most of us go to the grocery store once a week. Here are great ways to make your food last longer and it all has to do with how you store it.When it comes to fruit keep it on the counter top. The counter is where fruit should be stored. As for potatoes and onions those can be stored in a darker area like the pantry. When it comes to refrigerated foods, milk, dairy and yogurt should be kept on the top shelf because that’s where the temperature is most constant. When it comes to storing eggs in the door, that’s a no no. The door is the warmest place of a fridge.Do you throw away the bag you put the vegetables in at the store? It’s best you keep them in there and then place it in the crisper drawers. Also, when it comes to your vegetables don’t rinse them before you store them. That will have them go bad faster. As for fish, it only keeps for 2 days in a refrigerator. Meat only lasts for 4 days. Make sure to keep them in the bottom shelf which is the coldest place in the fridge. If you are not eating your protein that week, meat lasts 6 months in the freezer and fish lasts 3 months. As for leftovers, they only last 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator. 1347

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin could receive a pension worth more than million during his retirement years, even if he is convicted in connection with the death of George Floyd.Chauvin is the officer identified as kneeling on Floyd's neck during his arrest in May. He kept his knee on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes, even as Floyd begged that he couldn't breathe.Chauvin, who had worked for the Minneapolis Police Department since 2001, was promptly fired. He was later charged with third-degree murder in connection with Floyd's death, which has since been upgraded to second-degree murder. But Chauvin still stands to benefit from a pension program partially funded by taxpayers. A number of states allow for the forfeiture of pensions for employees convicted of felony crimes related to their work. However, Minnesota does not have that policy in place.Chauvin would likely be eligible for annual payments of around ,000 a year if he chose to start receiving them at age 55.The benefits could stretch to .5 million or more over a 30-year period. 1090
Fired FBI Director James Comey said in an interview that aired Tuesday morning that the FBI's credibility is worse now than it was a few years ago but would be even worse had it not been for his actions leading the bureau."It's worse. But again, people can disagree about this. And people I respect will. But my judgment is it would be worse today had we not picked the least bad alternative," Comey said, speaking with NPR's "Morning Edition." "I think the decisions that we had to make and lots of other follow-ons, sure, the Department of Justice's and the FBI's reputation has been hurt," he continued. 614
