SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It is Tax Day, and if you’re like most Californians, you’re probably wondering what happened to the nice refund you’re used to getting. Or worse, you owe the government this year. So how do you Make it in San Diego on Tax Day? We found an expert who can help.It's the worst sticker shock imaginable. You're used to a little something back from the government every year in the form of a refund, but suddenly you find yourself with a hefty bill. And the feds don't look kindly on late payments."I always tell people: if you owe money, the first step is don't panic," says Ariel Jurow-Kleiman an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of San Diego. Jurow-Kleiman should know. She's helped people in this situation many times before as a tax attorney and now teaches tax law at USD. Here's the problem."The Federal tax laws were changed in a way that will dramatically affect California residents," explains Professor Kleiman.And that's probably what hit you, too. Many itemized deductions you used to get were either tossed out or capped. "It used to be you could deduct all of your state income taxes," adds Jurow-Kleiman.Now those California income taxes are capped at ,000. And your house, the interest on the mortgage was capped too - double whammy. So, if you owe, here's the first step: do not put off filing. "Absolutely, it is so important to file your taxes on time even if you think you're going to owe," says Professor Kleiman, emphasizing the point. There are penalties for filing late: 5% of your tax liability and up to a maximum of 25%. So, let's say you owe 00 and didn't file for a month, that alone will cost you at least an extra . Some are purchasing at-home test kits online, at no up-front cost.Raechel Kadoya is not a clinician, nor is she at a doctor's office. She is the co-owner of Soichi Sushi, giving herself a COVID-19 test."I want to take advantage of being proactive," Kadoya said as she swabbed her nose.Since the modified re-opening of her restaurant in University Heights, she and her staff have been cautious about coronavirus exposure. That is why she ordered the Pixel by Labcorp at-home COVID-19 test kit for her entire staff."I think that it is my responsibility as a business owner, not only to my staff but to my customers and my family, to make sure that everybody is doing business here safely," Kadoya said.This is the staff's second round of testing. Kadoya said the first one required multiple doctors referrals just to get a drive-through appointment an hour away."We were able to find a place in Lake Elsinore, so we all had to drive up there," Kadoya said.Dr. Abi Olulade, a family medicine physician at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, said the accessibility of these at-home tests is a big draw."It definitely is something that is very convenient for consumers," Dr. Olulade said.But she suggested customers do their homework before they order."They should be looking at whether or not the tests that they are using have been FDA authorized, and it's not just some random test that they found on the internet," Dr. Olulade said.As of June 12, 2020, seven at-home COVID-19 test kits have the FDA's emergency use authorization. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s the most wonderful time of the year and volunteers are spreading a little holiday cheer for those who are less fortunate. Just Call Us Volunteers are preparing a special Christmas dinner for hundreds of homeless. 30 gallons of stock, 75 pounds of green beans and more than 270 pounds of turkey are just some of the items being served on the dinner menu. Just Call Us Volunteers is strictly made up of volunteers who want to give back. The group will serve at least three homeless shelters around the county on Christmas Day. They offer food to at least “350 at the tent downtown, the Alpha Project tent. We probably got 65 at Rachel’s Women's Shelter and 65 at the San Diego Center for Children,” says Julie Darling, organizer of Just Call Us Volunteers. The food is donated from Specialty Produce, Cupcakes Squared and Sprouts Farmers Markets. The organization says their volunteer list is full for Christmas Day but they give back all year long. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s a great time to buy a used car. “These deals are once in a lifetime,” said Ivan Drury, a used car expert with Edmunds. Amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, used car prices have been decreasing. According to Bloomberg News, the average price of a used car fell 11.4% from March to April. Drury predicts those prices could continue to fall, as desperate rental car companies start to offload unused inventory. Hertz, which filed for bankruptcy on Friday, has a fleet of about 500,000 vehicles. It’s unclear what their plan is for them, but Drury suspects they will only keep enough to maintain a basic level of service. “That influx of used vehicles will have a dramatic impact on price,” he said. Adding to the supply of used cars, Drury predicts that some drivers who have leased cars will hold on to them for a few more months rather than trade them in. But in several months to a year, he expects that could lead to another flood of used vehicles. “You kind of have a perfect storm for used car values to drop even further,” said Drury. 1090
