PALA, Calif. (KGTV) – An Oceanside woman is dead and a man and 11-year-old are hospitalized after a vehicle was found overturned on an embankment near State Route 76. The family of three, a father, mother and son, were traveling from Palomar Mountain back to their home in Oceanside.At about 6:13 a.m. Friday, California Highway Patrol received a call from San Diego Sheriff's Department about a vehicle that had veered off the roadway. The driver, a 30-year-old man from Oceanside, said he was unsure of his location and knocked unconscious in the crash, but that he was somewhere along SR-76 between Palomar Mountain and Oceanside. He also was not sure what time they went over the edge, but said they had been driving around 11 p.m. Thursday night, which means they could have been down there for close to eight hours. Both agencies dispatched crews to find the vehicle and using his cellphone location, were able to find the vehicle just after 6:30 a.m. south of SR-76 near Bodie Blvd. The vehicle, a Subaru carrying, was about 300 feet down a steep embankment near the roadway."He wasn’t even sure when the crash happened. He thought he left somewhere around 11 o’clock last night, heading home from Palomar Mountain to Oceanside, so he may have been out there all night," said CHP Public Information Officer Mark Latulippe.The right-front passenger, a 30-year-old woman, had died from her injuries in the crash. The driver sustained major injuries and was taken to Palomar Medical Center. An 11-year-old male who was in the right rear of the Subaru also received major injuries and was taken to Rady Children's Hospital.The driver and child are expected to recover.A small dog was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Animal control helped locate the dog after the crash.Investigators are not sure how long the vehicle had been there. They believe sometime overnight the Subaru was traveling on SR-76 near the Wilderness Gardens Preserve when for unknown reasons it left the roadway and overturned down the embankment. All three victims were ejected during the crash and found either partially or fully outside of the vehicle, CHP says.The names of those involved in the crash were not released. Investigators do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash and everyone is believed to have been wearing a seatbelt. 2342

Parents worried about a lack of social-emotional growth in their young children during social distancing and child care closures, consider playing with the family dog or taking the whole family on the dog's walk.A study published this week in Pediatric Research points to improvements in toddlers’ behavior interacting with others when they have some amount of time spent with the family dog.Information from more than 1,600 parents were included in the study, which asked how old their children were, if they had a dog, how often the child went on the family dog walks or actively played with the dog, as well as other questions. In addition, parents filled out a Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire about their child’s development and behavior.Overall, researchers found that preschool aged children from dog-owning homes had reduced likelihood of conduct problems and increased likelihood of prosocial behavior compared to children without a dog. Positive results were seen with family dog walking at least once a week and active play between the family and dog at least three times or more a week.The study’s authors report part of their motivation for the study was the decreasing physical activity levels of young children. They reference studies on increased activity among adult dog owners, and wanted to look at whether there were increased levels in children with dogs in the home.Participants live in Australia, and gave their survey results between 2015 to 2018 as part of a larger early childhood education and care research project.The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire is a commonly used, 25-item document that measures the social and emotional well-being of children.If a family dog is not possible at this time, maybe consider offering to walk a neighbor’s pet; physical activity, interacting with an animal and the benefit of doing something nice for a neighbor. 1900

PHOENIX, Arizona — Cell phone video of a boy repeatedly punching a girl in a sixth-grade class at Alfred F. Garcia Elementary School in Phoenix has gone viral, and the mother of the victim is upset with the school for not contacting her after the beating. The 12-year-old girl who was punched did not want to show her face or give her name, but says a lot of kids in school have seen the video. "It's gotten to the point where it's so viral, that they've made memes about it," said the victim.The girl used to be friends with the boy who is seen punching her, but she claims she made a joke months ago about his sister. She says she feels the attack was planned and some kids pulled out their phones to record it.  "I looked at the phone, and I knew it was coming," said the victim. "That's why I didn't do anything about it."The victim says she didn't tell her mom because she didn't want her to worry. "It was hard telling her because I don't like seeing my mom cry," said the victim. "It hurts."But her mom, Antoinette Contreras saw it days later.  "It just feels like all my fears and worst thoughts happened," said Contreras. "They came true."Contreras says she is shocked the school never contacted her. She finally got through to the principal on Thursday. "My question to her was, 'Why did you not contact me?'" said Contreras. "This happened on Monday. It is now Thursday."And while she wants the boy to face consequences, more importantly, Contreras wants him to get help. "I come from, what we call the ghetto, south Phoenix," said Contreras. "A lot of times these kids are rejected. They're the rejects of the world. The outcasts. The misfits. They're the ones that no one cares about. Because the parents don't care about them at home. And the staff doesn't care about them at school. And no one on the streets cares about these kids."Contreras says she plans to pull all of her children out of the Murphy Elementary School District. Police in Omaha, Nebraska are looking for a suspect vehicle in connection with a shooting at the Irvington Walmart just before 5 p.m. Wednesday that left a 21-year-old woman dead.Kayviaun T. Nelson died after a shooting in the parking lot of the Walmart near 99th Street and Military Avenue, just off Interstate 680, with a child reportedly in the vehicle. OPD are looking for a 2001 bronze Chevy Malibu with license plate VVT-545.Police closed down the Irvington Walmart for hours Wednesday evening while conducting their investigation around the store.Police said they believe some type of disturbance occurred at a different location and the suspect in the shooting followed her to Walmart.Officers later worked with store management to clear all customers from the Walmart location just off Interstate 680 North and prevent anyone else from entering the location. OPD said they expected the store to be closed for a few hours while they review surveillance video. An OPD forensics unit arrived at the scene just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.  1116
