They say when life gives you lemons... make lemonade. Now one Cheektowaga, New York girl is using the lemonade she makes to buy happiness for other children. Eight year-old Abby Jacques was devastated when she found out someone stole her brand new bike from her home on Cleveland Drive, so she decided to take action. She set up a lemonade stand to raise money for a new bike. Thursday marks National Coming Out Day — an LGBTQ holiday that encourages young queer people to be comfortable with their sexuality and live an open lifestyle.2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the first National Coming Out Day, first celebrated in 1988. According to the Human Rights Campaign, the day was started by gay activists Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary. Recognized by all 50 states, the day is celebrated each year on the anniversary of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which took place on Oct. 11, 1987.As a psychologist, Eichberg wrote extensively on the act of "coming out" to friends, family and coworkers. in 1978, he established "The Experience," a community workshop in Los Angeles that encouraged young LGBTQ people to live an openly gay lifestyle among friends and family.According to Eichberg, when LGBTQ people lived an open lifestyle it made their friends and family more likely to be accepting of queer lifestyles. It also encourages other gay people to live openly and helps develop a support network for those who may be struggling with their sexual identities.The Human Rights Campaign has published a resource guide to coming out, which you can read below. Tourism spending in Oceanside set a record in 2017, with visitors shelling out 1 million last year.The new numbers, from a study by Dean Runyon Associates, were announced at the city's 8th annual Tourist Summit."It’s an exciting time in Oceanside," says Visit Oceanside CEO Leslee Gaul. "We’re really going through renaissance here."The city has had seven straight years of growth in tourist spending. The numbers in 2017 were 10.1% higher than 2016. Employment in the industry is also growing steadily. Tourism supports more than 3,300 jobs in Oceanside, and jobs in that sector have had averaged a 5.1% increase since 2010.Tourists spent 0 million on hotel rooms in 2017. That's up 11% from the year before, and it's twice the amount they spent in 2010. That gave the city million in Transient Occupancy Taxes, money that goes directly into the city's general fund to pay for city services, infrastructure, parks and more.Gaul thinks more people are coming to Oceanside because the city offers a more laid-back version of the Southern California lifestyle."We’re still one of the classics, Southern California beach communities," she says. "We really have what appeals to visitors today. They’re looking for that local, authentic experience and I think being slow to grow over the past few years has really been a benefit to our community."Local business owners say the increase in tourists is helping them expand as well. Arthur Escobar owns Oceanside Boat Rentals. He says business is so good, he's already bought two new boats for this summer season. He expects to buy two more by the end of the summer. He's also hiring 7 or 8 more employees for the season."This is a nice, friendly town," says Escobar. "There's no hustle and bustle, The beach here is incredible, three miles of big sandy beaches, you don’t get that most places."The study also showed a significant increase in spending at local restaurants. Gaul thinks that's part of what's fueling the city's renaissance. "There have been dozens of new restaurants opening in the last few years, and we have more on the horizon," she says.There are also more hotels planned, including a pair of new properties near the iconic Oceanside Pier. One will be a resort-style hotel with 226 rooms. The other is a boutique-style hotel that will have 160 rooms and incorporate a renovation of the Top Gun house. 2410
To know how a pandemic and politics have impacted Nogales, Arizona, Aissa Huerta will tell you to just look around.“It’s another world here, so often, it’s missed,” said Huerta.On the street that’s home to her art gallery, steps from the border, there’s not much to see at all. Morley Avenue is empty, many of the stores are closed.“We don’t have shoppers,” said business owner Evan Kory, who owns La Cinderella.For more than seven decades., Kory's family has owned stores in Nogales. The Arizona border city has a population of around 20,000 people. On the other side of the border wall is Nogales, Mexico, a city with a population of more than 200,000 people.Since March, the Mexican-American border has been closed to non-essential travel. The rules mean Mexican shoppers and the millions of dollars they spend in Arizona must stay on the other side of the wall.Kory says at least 90 percent of his store’s customers are from Mexico.“We’ve always been dependent on population in Mexico to support our local economy, so as soon as that’s cut off, our economy is shut down essentially,” he explained.Air travel isn’t restricted, but policy says people must have an essential reason to drive or walk across the border.For now, the restrictions that have been extended monthly since March, mean Alex La Pierre can’t lead tours across the border for his non-profit, the Border Community Alliance, a group that aims to show how concrete and barbed wire can’t divide two cities with powerful similarities.“The more opportunities that we can get to, citizen to citizen, one on one, to meet our neighbor and to see that we’re all not that scary that we have a lot of common interests,” La Pierre said.“The worst part is we can’t share what we love about this area,” said Chef Minerva Orduno Rincon, who has led tours with BCA, using food to create a connection across the border.In this part of Arizona, it’s less about what’s considered Mexican or American.“Really it feels like one whole city here, just divided by a fence,” said Nogales high schooler Ingrid Torres.Many of Torres’ friends live and Mexico and she hasn’t seen them since the pandemic began.For locals like Aissa Huerta, the closer you live to the border, the easier it can be to see through the narratives about immigration often written by those who live far away.“You hear about the worst-case scenario or the drug busts or immigration, so you hear the atrocities of this area without ever getting the opportunity for residents here to tell their story or what it's like to live on the border of two different nations,” Huerta said. 2604

However, his doctors declined to share when Trump's last negative test was, how high his fever reached and other important vitals. His doctors also reported Sunday multiple instances in which Trump's blood oxygen levels dropped significantly — something that was not mentioned the day before. The doctors' reports also contradict Saturday comments from White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, who called the president's condition on Friday "very concerning" and added that Sunday and Monday would be "critical" in his fight against the virus.Through several photos and videos released by the White House, Trump has attempted to maintain the appearance of wellness.
