SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Point Loma family is trying to raise awareness of what they call a “dangerous” intersection, after cars have slammed into their house.The home the Cohen family began renting this year sits at the intersection of Nimitz Blvd. and Evergreen St., and has been hit twice since they moved in.According to San Diego Police, officers have responded to collisions at that intersection at least twelve times in the last five years.“I went to go wake up my mom and told her that we should probably get out of here because there's a car going into our kitchen,” said 12-year-old Max Cohen, speaking about a crash that happened the week the family moved in back in January. “You look out the window and see cars speeding down the road and not stopping at all on this turn.”Before they started renting, the Cohen’s weren’t notified that the home had a certain reputation for being hit. 10News reached out to the homeowner, who says that information was also not disclosed to him before he purchased the house this year. The City of San Diego tells 10News it is aware of the history of the intersection. Over the years, many cars have slammed into the house on Nimitz Blvd, sometimes resulting in serious injuries to the occupants in the home.A City spokesperson said upgrades to improve safety have been made, based on studies and evaluations by the City’s traffic engineering division.The following statement from the City of San Diego outlines the safety upgrades:“In the recent history, the City has evaluated the area and updated the intersection to include guardrails, a flashing beacon with a “curve” warning sign and a dedicated bike lane. The approaching lanes have been reduced from to one lane from two lanes and the signal at the approaching intersection has been modified to remain red between midnight and 4 a.m. to direct vehicles to stop before the intersection –- In other words the light remains red during the hours of 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. until a vehicle is detected.”But, the Cohen family said these changes are clearly not working.“It might not hit the house as much as it could, but it still does, which it shouldn’t at all,” said McKensey Cohen, whose bedroom was hit by a car in October. “Since then we've just been on edge about everything. We can hear the street for miles.”The family said they have contacted the City’s code enforcement department to come check the stability of the home, specifically McKensey’s bedroom, but they have not received a visit.The family hoped to move out the day of the last crash, but they had to postpone the move. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A random act of kindness at a Rancho Bernardo grocery store has a grateful grandma paying it forward. Kathy Yezarski went to the Albertsons at Rancho Bernardo and Poway Roads Friday night to buy milk and cereal for her grandchildren, who were staying at her home. She was about to pay for her groceries when she noticed a problem. “When I got to the checkout I was really embarrassed to see that I didn’t have my wallet,” Yezarski said. Yezarski thought she’d have to leave the items behind and return home when “a very kind young man” noticed her dilemma. “The man behind me very quickly said ‘I’ve got this,’” Yezarski said. Yezarski was mortified she had forgotten her wallet. “It was really touching to me…heartwarming that he would do that for someone.” Yezarski was so moved, she posted about the kind act on the Nextdoor app for her neighborhood. She was hoping the young man would see the post but she wasn’t expecting the reaction she received. “I didn’t realize when I posted until after I posted that two previous posts had been about recent shootings, and I think people were just reeling from that, feeling so upset and I think they needed to hear something positive. A lot of people said that: thank you for restoring my faith in humanity,” Yezarski said. She was inspired to perform a kind act of her own. “Beyond just thanking him, I thought - I’ve got to pay this forward. I went on the website for the San Diego Food Bank and donated. I thought, wow, I can’t just let this stop here, I can’t. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rancho Bernardo hotel hit hard by the loss of midweek conventions is taking new steps to fill vacant rooms."We were doing pretty good and then Labor Day came and we fell off a cliff again," said Jeff Livingston, who directs sales at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Livingston says the number of employees has gone from the hundreds into the dozens, as the business conventions the inn depends on have all but dried up. Now, the Rancho Bernardo Inn deems success at 35% occupancy, a number that a year earlier was upwards of 90%. "During the week we're literally sometimes in single digits," Livingston said. "There are times where there are more staff than there are guests." The Rancho Bernardo Inn has plenty of company. San Diego's tourism industry has lost 52,000 jobs in the last year, a nearly 26% drop, according to data released Friday by the Employment Development Department. The region's unemployment rate was 9% in September, with jobs down 117,000 over the year. Lynn Reaser, chief economist at Point Loma Nazarene University, said hotels are seeing a few more visitors because of road trips, but that business will be limited until a vaccine arrives.Meanwhile, the Rancho Bernardo Inn has dropped its rates on Sunday nights through Thursday, in some instances offering two nights for the price of one. But that's not all it's doing. Livingston said he and other workers are knocking on doors, visiting businesses, and doing all they can to spread the word about the discounts. Additionally, the hotel converted one of its meeting rooms to a kids game room. It has also arranged for a bird trainer on weekends that brings an owl and a falcon, which eat rabbit meat off of a guest's gloved hand for . "No stone goes unturned and there really isn't a bad idea right now," Livingston said.Livingston said beekeeping could be next. He said if the occupancy rate can get to at least 40% and stay that way, more jobs could come back. The U.S. government has taken the first 600 American tourists out of Peru, but the San Diegans who are still there say they still don't have concrete information on when it will be their turn. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego company has a solution for tired employees or students -- they've created "napping pods" which can be rented by the hour."It's a place to go, escape from a hectic environment and recharge," said Hohm CEO Nikolas Woods.The pods are small, just 43.5 square feet each. They include a fully-furnished twin-size bed, mirror, charging stations, fan, lights and light and noise dampening curtains."Every piece was put together to create the most comfort," said Woods.Right now, Woods has just three pods in service, all on the University of Arizona campus. He hopes to expand to more college campuses around the country.He's also trying to get large corporations to buy some for their employees, and he's trying to get some places in major airports as well."A lot of employees could use a break," Woods said. "Wouldn't it be better to go somewhere and recharge, get your productivity level up?"People can find and book the pods through the Hohm website.
