SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Due to struggling ridership, the City of San Diego has been busy creating a plan to revamp its bikesharing program.On Wednesday staff will provide an update on improvements made and future plans, in response to a grand jury report in 2016.The program, DecoBike, is privately owned but works in partnership with the city.Critics of the program say it has not met the city's needs due to where stations were built.Last year a county grand jury report titled "San Diego's Bikesharing Program Needs Help," outlined ways the city and DecoBike could improve to better serve the community.One recommendation was to put more stations in beach communities, even though local business owners and residents protested them being there.Since then, the city has done the opposite, removing 14 stations from beach communities.City spokesperson Katie Keach says the city and DecoBike are concentrating on increasing the number of stations in the urban core.By doing this, they believe it will provide for a comprehensive system to increase alternative transportation options. They say it will also help the city meet its Climate Action Plan goals.Keach says they hope to have additional stations in North Park, Uptown, Golden Hill and downtown this winter.The city is conducting presentations to community planning groups this fall, seeking public input.Bicycle and climate activists want the program to succeed, saying it's critical to the city's Climate Action Plan.  1486

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of San Diego short-term vacation rental hosts sounded off Wednesday against a bill that could limit how much they're able to rent out some of their properties on sites like Airbnb and VRBO.The hosts implored the California Coastal Commission to oppose the bill at its meeting on Shelter Island.The bill, by North County Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath, is specific to San Diego County's coastal zone and would sunset in five years. It would limit how much hosts can rent out their non-primary residences on sites like Airbnb and VRBO to 30 days a year. "I can't believe this has even come up as an actual bill," Airbnb host John Wilson told the commission.Hosts also said they are using the income to put their kids through college, and that their rentals provide families affordable, large accommodations near the coast, allowing visitors to avoid renting multiple hotel rooms and resort fees. But Boerner Horvath said the bill is needed because short-term rentals are adding to the region's housing supply crunch."When the upper level of housing stock is removed for short-term vacation rentals, the folks that would have actually lived there move down the market; they usually want to live in a certain area," she said. The bill passed the Assembly and is now scheduled for state Senate committee hearings. The legislation comes after an Airbnb-led signature drive essentially blocked restrictions the San Diego City Council approved in 2018. The commission heard 90 minutes of testimony, overwhelmingly opposed to the bill. Still, it remained neutral on the legislation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters responded after a fire broke out in an abandoned building in San Diego’s Lincoln Park neighborhood Saturday morning. The fire started inside a building on Ocean View Boulevard and 47th Street around 9:30 a.m. Large plumes of black smoke could be seen from miles away. The building that caught fire is owned by a nearby church. According to a church official, the building was used to help house the homeless. The official told 10News the church recently told those staying in the building they had to leave after several incidents.At this time, it’s unclear what started the fire or if anyone was injured. "This fire has been stopped. Crews will be here for a few hours. Please use caution if you are in the area but take alternate routes if possible," San Diego Fire-Rescue said in a Tweet. 833

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite a recent surge in attendance and stock prices, SeaWorld Entertainment Tuesday announced 125 job cuts company-wide.Interim CEO John Reilly said in the company’s earnings report Monday that the company identified million of “additional cost reductions.”A spokesperson for the company said the restructuring affects all the company’s theme parks as well as corporate offices, located in Orlando.RELATED: SeaWorld To Eliminate 350 Jobs, Including 80 In San DiegoOther than SeaWorld parks, the company also owns Sesame Place and Bush Gardens parks.
