SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two women are launching a new nonprofit, Black San Diego, to bolster Black-owned businesses locally. It started at a kitchen table over chips and salsa four years ago. Sheri Jones, a real estate broker, and physical education teacher Tinicia Smith wanted to create a hub for Black-owned businesses in San Diego. They created a Facebook group called Black San Diego and now they're more than 34,000 members strong."For the last four years we've been able to collect data and what we realize is that business owners haven't been able to sustain because they don't have the tools," Jones said. She first noticed the issue when she was running her real estate business and went to a conference. She said she was the one Black person there and it was uncomfortable."I knew when I was having trouble, others must be too," Jones said. This week, Black San Diego became official, registered through the government and they're excited to plan workshops to offer those tools to the community. Jones described the workshop as, "an 8-week course where they can go through and get business basics, book keeping, business taxes, really how to formulate their corporation."Newly Appointed Board Member and CEO of Growth 1031 Lance Growth said these workshops are crucial for black-owned businesses like his."I stumbled into my position.. I made so many mistakes and I just had to sit down and learn from those mistakes," he said. "I'm going to send my operations lady, and ask her to take some extra notes on accounting, on marketing, on filing correctly, but it's a really beneficial tool."The workshop costs 0 per business and the nonprofit is launching a donation campaign to sponsor local Black-owned businesses."If the dollar circulates in the Black community then we can unite and produce generational wealth and that's what we're here to do," Smith said. They hope to bring members of their community out and help them elevate their business, "they don't want to step in the front, not get criticized, not get caught up in the chaos. We've been working smartly in the back, building our companies and now we don't have the luxury to sit in the dark anymore."If you would like to donate to Black San Diego please click here. 2240

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A man was arrested last month after allegedly using a body bag and gurney to steal from a deceased man’s home, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. On August 31st, around noon, sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check at a Spring Valley home and discovered a 60-year-old man dead inside. They say he died of natural causes and was transported to a mortuary by a contracted independent mortuary service.A couple of days later, the victim’s family reported missing items, including a gun and a safe. They then watched surveillance video from the home and learned it had been burglarized. The alleged burglary happened about 11 hours after deputies responded to the welfare check. In the video provided by the sheriff's department, you see a man, now identified as Sammy Willie Gates, rolling a gurney and body bag out of the house and into a white van.Detectives say the body bag was full of stolen items.Gates is the owner of Mortuary Transportation services, a contracted independent mortuary service; however, deputies say his company was not used to transport the victim’s body earlier. It’s unclear how Gates would have known the home was empty.Detectives from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station served a search warrant at Gates home in unincorporated El Cajon on September 9th.Inside, they found the victim’s safe and gun, along with 16 more firearms, two additional safes, jewelry, watches, war medals, comic books, thousands of dollars in collectible coins, and multiple personal identifying documents.Detectives also found a gurney and body bag matching the items in the video in Gate’s white utility van.He was arrested and charged with felonies, including Burglary of the First Degree and Receiving Stolen Property.Gates has prior felonies and is due in court for a preliminary hearing in January. 1857

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Troops will soon arrive at several bases throughout San Diego County to provide support U.S. Customs and Border Protection as the migrant caravan approaches.According to the United States Northern Command, troops are being sent to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Camp Pendleton, Naval Air Facility El Centro, Naval Base Coronado, Naval Base San Diego and Naval Base Point Loma. The Pentagon confirmed Wednesday that as many as 7,000 troops are being deployed to three states for support, though President Donald Trump told reporters as many as 15,000 could be sent.According to ABC News, 15,000 is roughly the number of troops deployed to Afghanistan and three times the number in Iraq."As far as the caravan is concerned our military is out, we have about 5,000-8 (thousand), we'll go up to anywhere between 10 (thousand) and 15,000 military personnel on top of border patrol, ICE and everybody else on the border," Trump told reporters Wednesday.Related Stories 997

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When you are out in public, it is virtually impossible to tell who has immunity to the coronavirus and who is susceptible.A San Diego-based company is trying to change that by developing two new COVID-19 monitoring systems that are as easy as checking someone’s forearm.Diomics is developing a device that looks like a nicotine patch that the company says can reveal the presence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in 24 to 36 hours. The patch is intended to be worn for one to two weeks, offering people a way to monitor -- and potentially display -- their infection status, according to CEO Anthony Zolezzi. When the patch, named Diocheck, detects antibodies circulating in the blood, it turns red.“We think this is an integral piece of getting things back to normal,” Zolezzi said. “This can get the country back operating and get us comfortable that the people around us aren’t infected.”A second device, made from thousands of tiny polymer beads, can be injected into the skin and offer COVID monitoring for six months to a year, Zolezzi said. The company is still testing how long the test can stay active before it’s safely absorbed by the body. The company plans to launch clinical trials at UC Irvine next month.Zolezzi envisions the tests would be useful for employees in numerous sectors, including the airline industry, the cruise industry, the gambling industry and the military, offering a new way to detect and rapidly quarantine infected individuals.Once a coronavirus vaccine is released, the tests could be a useful companion, he said, since it will likely take several weeks to develop protective antibodies after inoculation. An individual wearing the patch, for example, could find out when they have antibodies circulating in the blood. The tests could also show when a person begins to lose antibodies. Studies have show individuals with a mild coronavirus infection lose antibodies after a few months, and it’s common for vaccines to require multiple doses.“This patch will show you, when the color dissipates, it’s because your antibodies have dissipated,” Zolezzi said. “That’s the time when you need to get a boost, or some type of prophylaxis.”The small biotech firm with less than 20 employees is leveraging technology that’s more than 100 years old.In 1907, a French physician named Charles Mantoux developed an injection test for tuberculosis that produces a raised, red dot on the skin when the bacteria is detected. This is the standard test given today.“All we’re doing is modernizing it,” Zolezzi said. The company’s patented slow-release material allows for much longer monitoring, he added.Diomics was making skin care, wound care and diabetes products before the pandemic shifted the company’s focus. Their components are FDA approved individually, but will need new approval for this use, Zolezzi said.Zolezzi said production is underway, but the company is hoping to partner with a large drugmaker to rapidly scale up manufacturing. Their goal is to have products on the market by the end of the year. 3055
