A number of states in the last 24 hours have taken the extraordinary step of closing most entertainment venues hoping to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. These restrictions are in line with recommendations by the CDC to limit the number of people in one location. Here are some of the states who have announced these measures:Louisiana: On Monday, Gov. John Bel Edwards said he is limiting the size of gatherings to fewer than 50 people, closing casinos, bars and movie theaters and limiting restaurants to delivery, take out and drive-through orders only.Michigan: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will shut down all movie theaters. Her announcement came in conjunction with the closure of all dine-in restaurants. New York: Gyms, movie theaters and casinos will be closed, statewide, effective 8:00 p.m. Monday.Ohio: After previously closing casinos, Gov. Mike DeWine announced Monday that all recreation centers, movie theaters, bowing alleys, gyms and similar places of entertainment will close. --In addition to the aforementioned states, a number of major cities, like San Francisco and Los Angeles, have closed places of entertainment. The largest theater chain in the US, AMC Theatres, and the largest gym chain, Planet Fitness, are continuing operations in locations where permitted. A request for comment has been left with AMC Theatres and Planet Fitness on their plans moving forward. 1403
A romance scam has claimed another victim, a woman hoping for some companionship, but whose Mr. Right turned out to be all wrong.Petronica Williams thought she found the man of her dreams on Instagram, a great looking, New York City-based fitness trainer."He inboxed me on Instagram," Williams said, "saying 'hey gorgeous, I want to get to know you.' "Her Romeo sent videos, showing him training some of the stars of the VH1 reality show "Love and Hip Hop." Williams couldn't believe he was interested in her, but he was.She says their messaging got more and more intense, and he wanted her to come to his fitness studio in New York. Unfortunately, first he had to go to Africa on a short assignment. That's when trouble developed.New friend needs money to get home"He said he was over there working as a fitness trainer on a contract," Williams said. "But he was stranded and needed a way to get home."He needed money fast -- specifically 0 for a plane ticket home from Africa. He promised to return the money to her as soon as he got back to the U.S.So a love-struck Williams wired it to him through MoneyGram, and figured he was on his way.But he soon messaged her again, saying the Republic of Benin, in West Africa, would not let him leave unless he paid his income taxes first."They won't let me go home because I owe ,500 in taxes," the trainer messaged her. Before Williams took the time to realize what she was doing, she said, "I sent him a total ,076." Only after he stopped texting her back did she start suspecting she had been duped, that her fitness trainer may have been conning her from West Africa all along. 1644
A student says when she would tell her parents how school staff spoke to her, they didn’t believe her. So she grabbed her phone and recorded it. When her family saw it they said it is time for adults to be held accountable. In the video she recorded you can hear the principal of the Riverside Academy West Charter School in Dearborn, Michigan, and students. The principal says he was called by a teacher to help with disruptive students. Because she is a minor we are withholding her identity, but the student recording admits she interrupted class by talking with a friend. She says the principal then overreacted. He can be held yelling at the students to shut up and to go to another school if they don’t like it. He calls one student a big mouth. “I was scared. One girl was crying, because he has two faces, one for the parents and for us,” said the student. “I cannot imagine watching a teacher treat my children this way,” said Kaytlyn Dell, who is the student’s older sister. She is speaking for her parents because they do not speak English. “Kids are screaming. Teachers are screaming. There is no structure,” said Dell. “Anything short of treating children with dignity and respect, parents, colleagues, administrators, is unacceptable. So anytime that is compromised we take that very seriously and address the matter swiftly,” said Michael Conran, Superintendent of Global Education Excellence Schools, which runs several charter schools. Conran says he cannot comment on student behavior or personnel issues due to privacy laws, but the school will follow up. “My hope is that a conversation can take place, perhaps at this table with the parents, students, and staff members involved and there can be resolution,” said Conran. 1755
